Perhaps I'm missing something, but I didn't see anything in your
description about actually needing a *distributed* lock, just needing
a local that can be held by remote systems. As Devananda says, a
centralised lock that can be held by agents has been implemented in
Ironic - such a thing is very simple and quite easy to reason about...
but its not suitable for all problems. HA and consistency requirements
for such a thing are delivered through e.g. galera in the DB layer.

would make people think the thing is tested interestingly, when it's not.

[openstack-dev] Running dnsmasq in Neutron: unix rights

Hi,

I've been thinking for a long time on how to fix dnsmasq unix rights
issue in Neutron. Namely (from syslog):

/var/lib/neutron/dhcp/{id}/host : Permission denied

One way to fix it is to do:
chmod o+x /var/lib/neutron

Though I don't feel it's the right way to do things. Wouldn't it be
nicer to add:
--user=neutron

in spawn_process() in neutron/agent/linux/dhcp.py? I know some Debian
users did that, and it worked. I was tempted to add such patch, but I
don't think it's the right thing to do without upstream approval.

Yet another way would be to use adduser and add the nobody user in the
neutron group, but I'm discarding that option as the least safe.

I don't want to introduce a Debian specific security hole in my Neutron
package, and I am therefore seeking for advices in this list. What's the
safest way to fix that problem?

 I just mentioned other MySQL drivers the other day; MySQL
 Connector/Python, OurSQL and pymysql are well tested within SQLAlchemy
 and these drivers generally pass all tests.   There's some concern over
 compatibility with eventlet, however, I can't speak to that just yet.

[openstack-dev] nova networking API and CLI are poorly documented and buggy

I am not even sure what is the intent, but some of the behavior looks like 
it is clearly unintended and not useful (a more precise formulation of 
buggy that is not defeated by the lack of documentation).

IMHO, the API and CLI documentation should explain these calls/commands in 
enough detail that the reader can tell the difference.  And the difference 
should be useful in at least some networking configurations.  It seems to 
me that in some configurations an administrative user may want THREE 
varieties of the network listing call/command: one that shows networks 
assigned to his tenant, one that also shows networks available to be 
assigned, and one that shows all networks.  And in no configurations 
should a non-administrative user be blind to all categories of networks.

In the API, there are the calls on /v2/{tenant_id}/os-networks and they 
are documented at 
http://docs.openstack.org/api/openstack-compute/2/content/ext-os-networks.html
.  There are also calls on /v2/{tenant_id}/os-tenant-networks --- but I 
can not find documentation for them.

http://docs.openstack.org/api/openstack-compute/2/content/ext-os-networks.html 
does not describe the meaning of the calls in much detail.  For example, 
about GET /v2/{tenant_id}/os-networks that doc says only Lists networks 
that are available to the tenant.  In some networking configurations, 
there are two levels of availability: a network might be assigned to a 
tenant, or a network might be available for assignment.  In other 
networking configurations there are NOT two levels of availability.  For 
example, in Flat DHCP nova networking (which is the default in DevStack), 
a network CAN NOT be assigned to a tenant.

You might think that the to the tenant qualification implies filtering 
by the invoker's tenant.  But you would be wrong in the case of an 
administrative user; see the model_query method in 
nova/db/sqlalchemy/api.py 

In the CLI, we have two sets of similar-seeming commands.  For example,

$ nova help net-list
usage: nova net-list

List networks

$ nova help network-list
usage: nova network-list

Print a list of available networks.

Those remarks are even briefer than the one description in the API doc, 
omitting the qualification to the tenant.

Experimentation shows that, in the case of flat DHCP nova networking, both 
of those commands show zero networks to a non-administrative user (and 
remember that networks can not be assigned to tenants in that 
configuration) and all the networks to an administrative user.  At the API 
the GET calls behave the same way.  The fact that a non-administrative 
user sees zero networks looks unintended and not useful.

Hi All,

I would like to share with you about my recent efforts on the integration 
between Swift and Apache Spark. 
Spark  claims to have x100 faster map reduce analytics than conventional 
Apache Hadoop. (http://spark.apache.org/ for more information about Spark)
Spark can read data from various sources, HDFS, S3, local file system, 
various streaming sources.  Spark then used to perform analytics on this 
data. 

I started to work on the integration between Spark and Swift, allowing 
Spark to integrate with Swift and perform data analytics on the objects 
stored in Swift. In my local tests this works very well. There are no 
modification needed for Swift.  I submitted patches to the Spark community 
with information how to integrate it with Swift. This work is still in 
progress.

You know its bad when you can't sleep because you're redesigning gate
workflows in your head so I apologise that this email is perhaps
not as rational, nor as organised, as usual - but , . :)

Obviously this is very important to address, and if we can come up
with something systemic I'm going to devote my time both directly, and
via resource-hunting within HP, to address it. And accordingly I'm
going to feel free to say 'zuul this' with no regard for existing
features. We need to get ahead of the problem and figure out how to
stay there, and I think below I show why the current strategy just
won't do that.

 people who are willing to spend any time on them. And often they are
 popping up in configurations that we're not all that familiar with.

So, I *totally* appreciate that people fixing the jobs is the visible
expendable resource, but I'm not sure its the bottleneck. I think the
bottleneck is our aggregate ability to a) detect the problem and b)
resolve it.

For instance - strawman - if when the gate goes bad, after a check for
external issues like new SQLAlchemy releases etc, what if we just
rolled trunk of every project that is in the integrated gate back to
before the success rate nosedived ? I'm well aware of the DVCS issues
that implies, but from a human debugging perspective that would
massively increase the leverage we get from the folk that do dive in
and help. It moves from 'figure out that there is a problem and it
came in after X AND FIX IT' to 'figure out it came in after X'.

Reverting is usually much faster and more robust than rolling forward,
because rolling forward has more unknowns.

I think we have a systematic problem, because this situation happens
again and again. And the root cause is that our time to detect
races/nondeterministic tests is a probability function, not a simple
scalar. Sometimes we catch such tests within one patch in the gate,
sometimes they slip through. If we want to land hundreds or thousands
of patches a day, and we don't want this pain to happen, I don't see
any way other than *either*:
A - not doing this whole gating CI process at all
B - making detection a whole lot more reliable (e.g. we want
near-certainty that a given commit does not contain a race)
C - making repair a whole lot faster (e.g. we want = one test cycle
in the gate to recover once we have determined that some commit is
broken.

Taking them in turn:
A - yeah, no. We have lots of experience with the axiom that that
which is not tested is broken. And thats the big concern about
removing things from our matrix - when they are not tested, we can be
sure that they will break and we will have to spend neurons fixing
them - either directly or as reviews from people fixing it.

B - this is really hard. Say we want quite sure sure that there are no
new races that will occur with more than some probability in a given
commit, and we assume that race codepaths might be run just once in
the whole test matrix. A single test run can never tell us that - it
just tells us it worked. What we need is some N trials where we don't
observe a new race (but may observe old races), given a maximum risk
of the introduction of a (say) 5% failure rate into the gate. [check
my stats]
(1-max risk)^trials = margin-of-error
0.95^N = 0.01
log(0.01, base=0.95) = N
N ~= 90

So if we want to stop 5% races landing, and we may exercise any given
possible race code path a minimum of 1 times in the test matrix, we
need to exercise the whole test matrix 90 times to have that 1% margin
sure we saw it. Raise that to a 1% race:
log(0.01. base=0.99) = 458
Thats a lot of test runs. I don't think we can do that for each commit
with our current resources - and I'm not at all sure that asking for
enough resources to do that makes sense. Maybe it does.

Data point - our current risk, with 1% margin:
(1-max risk)^1 = 0.01
99% (that is, a single passing gate

This is very short notice so it is probably not possible for me to make it
during this cycle.  Don't count on me but if an event is scheduled in
Lisbon, I'd certainly want to give it a try.

An event during a future cycle would be much easier to plan for.

[openstack-dev] [Neutron][Swift][third-party] Most Third Party CI's failing

I noticed this afternoon (Saturday PST 1:18pm) that most of the Third Party
test systems started to fail because of the seuptools bug because of
dependency in python-swiftclient. I further noticed that some of the CI's
are voting +1, but, when I look through the logs, they seem to be hitting
this issue as well.

I have been on #openstack-infra most of the afternoon discussing various
options suggested by folks. Infra folks have confirmed this issue and are
looking for solution.  I tried fixes suggested in [1] and [2] below and
removed the setuptools and reinstalled version 3.8. This did not help. I
have opened the bug[3] to track this issue.

I thought I send out this message in case other CI maintainers are
investigating this issue.

Please share ideas/thoughts so that we can get the CIs fixed as soon as
possible.

 Owners of plugins/drivers should ensure their CI is matching the
 requirements set forth by both infra and Neutron when running tests
 and posting results. Like I indicated earlier, we will look at
 removing code for drivers which are not meeting these requirements as
 set forth in the wiki pages.

 The goal of this effort is to ensure consistency across testing
 platforms, making it easier for developers to diagnose issues when
 third party CI systems fail, and to ensure these drivers are tested
 since they are part of the integrated releases we perform. We used to
 require a core team member to sponsor a plugin/driver, but we moved to
 the 3rd party CI system in Icehouse instead. Ensuring these systems
 are running and properly working is the only way we can ensure code is
 working when it's part of the integrated release.

Any help is appreciated as i am trying to learn and understand main flows by

First I start devstack in offline mode.
OFFLINE=True ./stack.sh

Once it is running I go to the neutron window in screen.
There I stop neutron-server with ctrl-C, and press up-arrow to view the start 
command.

To run neutron-server in the PyCharm debugger edit the Run/Debug configuration 
with the following settings:

Script: /usr/local/bin/neutron-server
Script params: --config-file /etc/neutron/neutron.conf --config-file 
/etc/neutron/plugins/ml2/ml2_conf.ini
# I got this from the screen window where I stopped neutron
Working directory: /opt/stack/neutron

Now restart neutron from PyCharm instead of screen.

I have an update on the issue.
Kudos to the Infra folks, a huge thanks to Monty for coming up with patch
for this setuptools issue, and Anita for for being on top of this. Please
follow the steps in http://paste.openstack.org/show/84076/ to pull this
patch on your local systems to get past the issue - until the fix in the
upstream is merged.

Note that you have to install mercurial to pull this patch.

Can you please elaborate on columns of the table in [1]. Is [R] supposed to be 
for spec review and [C] for code review?
If this correct, would it be possible to add [C] columns for already merged 
specs that still have the code under review?

In order to make the review process a bit easier (without duplicating too much 
data and without creating too much overhead), we have created a wiki to keep 
track of the ML2 related specs for the Juno cycle [1]. The idea is to organize 
the people who participate in the ML2 subgroup activities and get the related 
specs reviewed as much as possible in the subgroup before asking the broader 
community to review. (There is of course nothing that prevents others from 
reviewing these specs as soon as they are available for review.) If you have 
any ML2 related spec under review or being planned, you may want to update the 
wiki [1] accordingly.

We will see if this will be useful or not. If you have any comments or 
suggestions please post here or bring them to the IRC weekly meetings [2].
