[openstack-dev] [watcher] Stepping down as Watcher spec core

2017-07-19 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hey guys,

It's been a long time since the last summit and our last discussions !
I hope Watcher is going well and you are getting more traction
everyday in the OpenStack community !

As you may guess, my last 2 months have been very busy with my
relocation in Vancouver with my family. After 8 weeks of active job
search in the cloud industry here in Vancouver, I've got a Senior
Product Manager position at Parsable, a start-up leading the Industry
4.0 revolution. I will continue to deal with very large customers but
in different industries (Oil & Gas, Manufacturing...) to build the
best possible product, leveraging cloud and mobile technologies.

It was a great pleasure to lead the Watcher initiative from its
infancy to the OpenStack Big Tent and be able to work with all of you.
I hope to be part of another open source community in the near future
but now, due to my new attributions, I need to step down as a core
contributor to Watcher specs. Feel free to reach me in any case if I
still hold restricted rights on launchpad or anywhere else.

I hope to see you all in Vancouver next year for the summit and be
part of the traditional Watcher dinner (I will try to find the best
place for you guys).

Cheers,

Antoine

[openstack-dev] [watcher] PTG agenda

2017-02-14 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi team,

Our PTG agenda is almost ready [1], it is still time to add topics to
the list that you want to discuss. As some of our contributors will
not be able to attend, I would suggest to add your topics and comments
by February 17th so that we can have a clear agenda for anyone who
wants to join remotely.

Thanks,

[openstack-dev] [watcher] Watcher release v1.0.0

2017-02-03 Thread Antoine Cabot
I'm very proud to announce today the availability of Watcher in version 1.0.0.
It has been a long way since the initial proposition in Vancouver almost
2 years ago. The project has received a lot of good feedback already thanks
to the amazing group of developers working on it. I would like to take the
opportunity to thank all of them today, from small doc contributions to larger
patches, everything is important and makes Watcher ready for production today.
Now that Watcher is ready, we need to build more advanced optimization
strategies to demonstrate the real value of our project. I will let alexchadin
leads this as our new appointed PTL for the Pike cycle.

Thanks a lot everyone for this great job, we made it !

[openstack-dev] [watcher] PTG preparation

2017-01-19 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hello folks,

We already are one month away from the PTG event (mid-cycle) for Watcher.
I started a new etherpad [1] to prepare the agenda. Please complete
the topics list with all the items you want to discuss. Even if you
don't plan to be in Atlanta, I'd like to have all Watcher community
plans discussed.
We are in good track to release version 1.0 by the end of the Ocata
cycle thanks to all your contributions.

Hope to see you all in Atlanta.

[openstack-dev] [watcher] Next PTL elections

2016-12-15 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi Watcher team,

I would like to share with you that I do not intend to run for the PTL
position of the Pike development cycle starting in March 2017. Next PTL
elections will be held at the end of January 2017. I'm sending this now
so I can work with people interested in the role, if you intend to
run for PTL in Pike then send me an email to discuss.

It's been an unforgettable ride. Being PTL a is very rewarding
experience, I'm not going away from the community, I just think three
terms as PTL has been enough and Watcher needs a new leader after 1.0
version targeted for Ocata.

To the Watcher contributors, thank you for all your time and commitment.
Each of you are amazing and together you make an awesome team.
It has been an absolute pleasure to serve as PTL, thank you for letting me
do so.

[openstack-dev] [watcher] Summit agenda & Mascot

2016-10-20 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi Watcher team,

I hope that most of view are now ready to attend the summit in Barcelona.
As a final reminder, Watcher agenda is available on [1] with all timings &
locations. I hope we will have very productive discussions to establish next
milestones for our project.
If you have an interest in using Watcher, do not hesitate to join our meetings
in Barcelona or to reply to this thread. We are welcoming new contributors
every week and the summit is a good opportunity to meet our fantastic team !
For family reasons, I won't be able to attend my 5th OpenStack summit, but
Susanne Balle (sballe) & David Tardivel (dtardivel) will drive our meetings,
please ping them if you want to discuss Watcher roadmap and last achievements.

I just received a draft version of our project logo [2], using the mascot we
selected together in Portland. A final version (and some cool swag) will be
ready for us before the Project Team Gathering in February. Before they make
our logo final, they want to be sure we're happy with our mascot.

We can discuss any concerns in Barcelona and you can also provide direct
feedback to the designers [3] Logo feedback is due Friday, Nov. 11.
To get a sense of how ours stacks up to others, check out this sneak preview
of several dozen draft logos from our community [4].

I wish you a very pleasant and productive summit in Spain !

[openstack-dev] [release][watcher] watcher Newton RC1 available

2016-09-19 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hello everyone,

The release candidate for Watcher for the end of the Newton cycle
is available! You can find the RC1 source code tarball at:

https://tarballs.openstack.org/watcher/python-watcher-0.30.0.tar.gz

Unless release-critical issues are found that warrant a release
candidate respin, this RC1 will be formally released as the final
Newton release on 6 October. You are therefore strongly
encouraged to test and validate this tarball!

Alternatively, you can directly test the stable/newton release
branch at:

http://git.openstack.org/cgit/openstack/watcher/log/?h=stable/newton

If you find an issue that could be considered release-critical,
please file it at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/watcher/+filebug

and tag it *newton-rc-potential* to bring it to the watcher release
crew's attention.

Note that the "master" branch of watcher is now open for Ocata
development, and feature freeze restrictions no longer apply there!

Thanks,

Antoine

[openstack-dev] [watcher] PTL candidacy

2016-09-13 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hello everyone,

I would like to announce my candidacy to continue as Watcher PTL for
the Ocata release. [1]

During the Newton cycle, our main achievement was to enter the
OpenStack big tent by demonstrating a great diversity of contributors
and the added-value of an infrastructure optimization service for
OpenStack.

With around 20 active contributors during the cycle and 15 blueprints
implemented, I'm very proud to lead this project and welcome new
contributors every week.

Given that the Ocata development window is shorter, my main goal for
Ocata is to focus on the stability and usability of Watcher. We also
need to provide more optimization strategies that will demonstrate
the capabilities of Watcher. Additionaly, I plan to work with Nova
on placement API used for scheduling decisions.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all members of
the OpenStack community who helped our team during the Newton cycle.

Thank you,
Antoine

[openstack-dev] [watcher] Mascot final choice

2016-07-28 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi Watcher team,

Last week during the mid-cycle, we came up with a list of possible mascots
for Watcher. The only one which is in conflict with other projects is the
bee.
So we have this final list :
1. Jellyfish
2. Eagle
3. Hammerhead shark

I'm going to confirm jellyfish as the Watcher mascot by EOW except if any
contributor is against this choice. Please let me know.

2016-06-01 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi Watcher team,

I'm glad to announce that Watcher has been accepted as a big tent project [1].
A big thank you to all our contributors, I hope we will get more people
involved in resource optimization for OpenStack in the coming weeks.
If you interested in this topic, please have a look at our wiki page [2] and
meet the team on #openstack-watcher channel.

[openstack-dev] [Watcher] Meeting time change

2016-05-10 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi Watcher team,

As discussed in Austin, I would like to make our team meeting
more appropriate for people from Asia.

I suggest to keep the current time (14:00 UTC) on even weeks
and switch to 9:00 UTC for odd weeks. We can still meet on
#openstack-meeting-4 for both meetings.

Do you have any suggestion ?

Thank you,

Antoine

[openstack-dev] [watcher] PTL candidacy

2016-03-14 Thread Antoine Cabot
Hi everyone,

I am seeking re-election as Watcher PTL for Newton after all the great work we
achieved during the Mitaka cycle. We completed around 20 blueprints and fixed
more than 100 bugs. The number of active contributors has been multiplied by
5 since the Liberty release.

It would be my honour to serve as PTL for the Newton cycle to continue the
journey along the following themes:
- Grow the community
- Improve Watcher stability & scalability
- Improve Watcher usability

I'm looking forward to continuing to grow the Watcher team.

[openstack-dev] [tc] [watcher] New project: Watcher

2015-10-21 Thread Antoine CABOT
We are pleased to introduce Watcher, a new project in the OpenStack
ecosystem. We believe that a "resource optimization" service in an
OpenStack-based cloud is a crucial component that has been missing to
date and we have started working towards filling that gap.

OpenStack Watcher provides a flexible and scalable resource
optimization service for multi-tenant OpenStack-based clouds.
Watcher provides a complete optimization loop—including everything
from a metrics receiver, complex event processor and profiler,
optimization processor and an action plan applier. This provides a
robust framework to realize a wide range of cloud optimization goals,
including the reduction of data center operating costs, increased
system performance via intelligent virtual machine migration,
increased energy efficiency—and more!

Not only does Watcher provide several out-of-box optimization routines
for immediate value-add, but it also supports a pluggable
architecture by which custom optimization algorithms, data metrics and
data profilers can be developed and inserted into the Watcher framework.
Additionally, Watcher enables two different modes of execution—advise
mode (manual) or active mode (automatic), giving cloud administrators
the runtime flexibilities that their clouds require. Most importantly,
administrators of OpenStack-based clouds equipped with Watcher will
decrease their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by way of more efficient
use of their infrastructure and less “hands on” (read: manual)
administrator involvement to perform optimizations.

More information, including key use cases, architecture, etc., are
described on the project wiki [0]. Also feel free to browse some
source code [1, 2].

We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 16:00 UTC in the #openstack-meeting-3
IRC channel. You can also use #openstack-watcher to contact the team.

We hope to see you at our unconference session at the upcoming
OpenStack Summit in Tokyo and we are welcoming participation from the
community. Let us know if you are interested in this topic and
join us in #openstack-watcher!
