[openstack-dev] [blazar] Blazar Forum session brainstorming etherpad

2018-09-06 Thread Pierre Riteau
Hi everyone,

I created an etherpad [1] to gather Berlin Forum session ideas for the
Blazar project, or resource reservation in general. Please contribute!

Thanks,
Pierre

Hi Masahito,

Thank you very much for leading the Blazar project successfully! We
wouldn't have accomplished so much without your dedication.

Hello,

Automated requirements updates [1] are all failing with the same error in the
run.yaml playbook of the legacy-requirements job, e.g. in python-blazarclient
[2].
The command `/usr/local/jenkins/slave_scripts/project-requirements-change.py
$ZUUL_BRANCH` fails with:

SystemError: error: pathspec 'remotes/origin/master' did not match any
file(s) known to git.

or, for patches using the Pike stable branch:

SystemError: error: pathspec 'remotes/origin/stable/pike' did not match any
file(s) known to git.

[openstack-dev] [Blazar] Design question regarding use of trusts for physical reservation

2017-02-09 Thread Pierre Riteau
Hello,

When Blazar was migrated to use trusts for physical host reservation
(https://review.openstack.org/#/c/84158/), it required Blazar users to be able
to manage host aggregates (which is not allowed by default Nova policies).
I believe that is not a good approach because it would allow them to take nodes
out of the freepool, completely bypassing Blazar and of course causing problems
with the system.
I explained the problem in more details in this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/blazar/+bug/1663204

It seems to me that Blazar still needs an account with admin privileges to
perform some actions on behalf of non-admin users.
Was there another alternative that was planned by the Blazar team at the time
that I overlooked?

Thanks,
Pierre

PS: I realise this is about code written almost 3 years ago, so I understand if
details are very fuzzy at this point…

Hello Hiroaki,

I was just going to send a similar message! I would also like to meet with
anyone interested in Blazar.

I am working on the Chameleon testbed [0] which uses Blazar for reservation of
physical nodes. To my knowledge, we may very well be the only user of Blazar in
production.
There was a renewal of interest about a year ago [1] which led to a code update
by Sylvain Bauza and Ildiko Vancsa.

There’s a lot more to do though. It’s been a very busy year for me, which has
prevented me from contributing back our patches to Blazar. Recently I have been
working on updating the Tempest tests to run correctly, but it’s a slow process.
I also noticed that a trivial change recently proposed [2] fails to pass
Jenkins checks: it seems to be caused by new default jobs in Zuul which fail
with the current Blazar code.

I invite you to join the Scientific Working Group BOF on Wednesday [3] where
there should be other people interested in Blazar.

We are using a modified version of Blazar (based on the latest master branch
commit) with OpenStack Juno (RDO packaging).

The only really mandatory patch that we had to develop was for blazar-nova due
to functions moving from oslo-incubator to oslo.i18n:
https://github.com/ChameleonCloud/blazar-nova/commit/346627320e87c8e067db6e842935d243c9640e6e
On top of this we developed a number of patches, most of them to fix bugs that
we discovered in Blazar, with a few to get specific features or behavior
required for Chameleon.

We also used the code developed by Pablo
(http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-dev/2014-June/038506.html) to
provide an Horizon dashboard for creating and managing leases.
We even developed a Gantt chart of physical node reservations, but this code
reads data straight from the SQL database rather than using a new Blazar API,
so it cannot be contributed as is.

We have always wanted to contribute back our improvements to Blazar and we are
looking forward to it now that there is renewed interest from the community.
All our OpenStack code should already be available on GitHub at
https://github.com/ChameleonCloud/

Re: [openstack-dev] [Blazar] Anyone interested?

2015-08-28 Thread Pierre Riteau
Hello,

The NSF-funded Chameleon project (https://www.chameleoncloud.org) uses Blazar
to provide advance reservations of resources for running cloud computing
experiments.

We would be interested in contributing as well.

Pierre Riteau

 Hi All,

The resource reservation topic pops up time to time on different forums to
cover use cases in terms of both IT and NFV. The Blazar project was intended
to address this need, but according to my knowledge due to earlier
integration and other difficulties the work has been stopped.

My question is that who would be interested in resurrecting the Blazar
project and/or working on a reservation system in OpenStack?

 Thanks and Best Regards,
 Ildikó
