Once you will read the pad, I think you can understand there are a lot of things to be considered before restarting Weekly News. To be honest, I'm not so interested in being the chair or the lead of Weekly News team, because I don't value the title. I always respect others not for their titles, but for their actual works. ;-) I think chair or lead doesn't mean hierarchy, but a role. And every role has its own authority and responsibility. One of the most important tasks for chair or lead might be organizing and offering needed information to others. I have been willing to move on, but still it's not easy for me to make enough time to reply to lists and join the IRC channels ATM. So if you are willing to carry forward, don't hesitate to go ahead. Some of the tasks which I listed on the pad can be postponed or more simplified. People often say 'should', 'must' or 'have to' to others' activities. As there is already some solution with GCI pages it should not be a problem to apply that to OWN. The main reason why the current method (edited in Docbook/XML format) is chosen is, we can generate several formats of OWN from one source. But as a result, the look of HTML in Bento theme (news.o.o) isn't good and good-looking Wiki pages cannot be generated easily so that translators have to make Wiki pages manually by themselves if they want to publish translated OWN in Wiki format. So, I myself can agree your proposal, if no one will argue strongly that we need HTML and PDF version of OWN in addition to Wiki version. Or, if someone knows a good way to generate HTML and PDF from Wiki, this problem can be solved. However, I think we need to archive the past issues. Is there any good (and easy) way to archive them if we select GCI_tasks style? 3) We should consider alternative browsing methods and layouts to currently used whole OWN issue on one page. One alternative is multiple pages, with browsing aid as Previous, Next, Index, present on all pages. The idea itself sounds good to me. But it would be better if you can create a draft template with this idea for further discussion. 3. Work in a more open manner (this is something I'm already seeing improvements in the past few weeks.) I have feeling that since OWN left wiki there was no easy way to contribute, which left team without new contributors. 4. As popular as it has been to expect a weekly edition, perhaps we should look at ways to adjust the release schedule in order to reduce the time-commitment burden. I proposed some time ago to consider alternatives to having full blown issue every week, ie. keeping every section every week. Also, we must consider how to join effort between OWN and openSUSE Magazine. I'd like to ask you all, list mates, once again. Please step forward if you are willing to undertake some tasks listed above responsibly. As I wrote in the previous post, I've been spending over 10 hours for editing, proofreading and translating OWN (7 or more hours of which are needed for translating, though) every week and that's max-out for me as a volunteer. I can't calculate how many hours are needed for whole tasks right now, but the max hours that I can dedicate for editing main OWN are 3-4 hours. If 10 hours are needed for publishing OWN in total, 6-7 hours have to be dedicated by others than me. And, if there's only one more contributor, (s)he has to dedicate 6-7 hours, but if there are 7 more contributors, each has to dedicate just 1 hour. That's a simple calculation. ;-) BTW, the current release schedule (publishing OWN on every Saturday) can be changed according to convenience of contributors. I have to tell you, list mates, that I was asked by Sascha whether I can take over the role of the chair of the openSUSE Weekly News Team before he posted the mail to this list, but I couldn't take on the entire burden of the role for now, at least under the current, too laborious procedure of publishing OWN. As you know, *Weekly* News have to be published *every week*. So contributors cannot take days off unless someone else will step into their shoes. Considering the fact that there are only few contributors for OWN, it will be too much burden for them. I, like everyone else here, want to pick up and hand on the torch of OWN. But that cannot be done only by me. As some of you may know, I have my own job which is not dedicated to FLOSS activities. I contribute openSUSE project just as a volunteer on an individual basis. I spend over 10 hours every week for collecting articles for OWN, proofreading it and translating it into Japanese. And realistically speaking, this (10 hours +) is all I can do. I myself have been concerned about the current situation of OWN - which should be the main format, where is the best workspace for collaborating, the relationship between openSUSE community and open-slx, copyright issue, why native English speakers won't help much for editing *English* Weekly News ... all of these should be reconsidered and improved. Yes, they should be, but I couldn't, because I couldn't squeeze a few extra hours out of my day for that. Maybe we need to make the current procedure of publishing OWN as simple as possible so that anyone can take over the task in case the main contributors are busy, or, break large tasks into smaller ones and decentralize responsibilities, if we want to continue OWN. But for now, I haven't got the best - or, at least, better - way yet. Of course I WILL bear a part as much as I can do, but if there is no one who will step forward to bear a part as well, OWN will burn out. Whether we can continue OWN or not depends on the willingness of our community... Hello mates, sorry for my off topic post. As all of you may know, Japan was struck by a strong earthquake and tsunami last week. Fortunately, I myself and my family live in Tokyo and escaped serious damage. I want to take this opportunity to thank community people who have been worried about my safety. However, the earthquake and tsunami did tremendous damage to eastern part of Japan. As far as we can count so far, the number of dead stands at more than 7,000, the number of missing stands at more than 10,000 and more than 450,000 people are still taking shelter in uncomfortable surroundings. A serious nuclear power plant disaster is now going on and due to the shutdown of some power plants which were damaged by the quake/tsunami, rolling blackouts are now implemented in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Although the quake/tsumani did little damage to Tokyo directly, we are still in messy situation. Supermarkets in the Tokyo region have been stripped bare of food and other daily necessities and many people are facing gasoline shortages (well, please do not too much worry about me because I myself have stockpiled enough foods and will be all right for the meantime ;-)). http://fooyoh.com/news/5919548 It is gratifying that you all are haveing fun with tweaking brand-new openSUSE 11.4, but I myself am not able to attend *the party* and really enjoy ATM. Hello mates, as I mentioned in another post, I want to share and discuss yet another problems which we, openSUSE Weekly News (OWN) team have right now - status of translations and how we can attract potential contributors (both editors and translators), how we can involve them and collaboration with News (news.o.o) team. = About translations = Many of you may know, at its peak, we had 13 translations of OWN. But now, we have only 2 translations. So, I want to ask those who once translated OWN but don't now (if they are still reading this list). * Why couldn't you continue translating OWN? (This is not meant to blame on you, but to find out what were the blocks for you.) # I'd like to explain why we Japanese team (and why only Japanese team) could continue translating over 2 years later in another post. ;-) * How should be the translation? Should it be pure translation of original en OWN? Or, can it be independent, so that each local OWN team can modify as needed? - I'd prefer the latter. But in that case: -- It's not easy for each local team to edit original edition from scratch. An essential edition which can be used as the base of each $LANG edition is absolutely needed. -- Why Sascha (German), Gertjan (Dutch), Thomas Hofstätter (Austrian), Thomas Schraitle (German) and me (Japanese) should edit *English* edition? Why won't other native English speakers help much more? = How can we attract potential contributors more? = The questions here are: * What makes the hurdle higher? * How we can make our work much more fun? Which fonts are used for Japanese? 2 types of characters (Kanji: 登場!

for each is different and doesn't look good. Would you please use
IPAGothic or IPAPGothic font both for Kanji and Hiragana?
In addition, JP is the country code for Japan and the language code for
Japanese is JA, so the file names should be {large,medium,small}.ja.png.

Kostas Warlordfff Koudaras One thing we should keep in mind is legal and license issue. Whether your appliance is a FOSS product or not depends on the licenses of the software which you adopt. If all the packages in it are FOSS applications, your appliance will be a FOSS product. But once you include proprietary software which cannot be freely redistributed in it, you won't be able to distribute it. It is technically viable to create appliances with commercial applications and 'gray zone' software such as multimedia codecs on SUSE Studio, but whether we can distribute such appliances or not is another matter. At least, such appliances shouldn't be distributed under the name of (open)SUSE. [opensuse-marketing] How can we spread the word to a much broader audience of people beyond openSUSE community?

You may know there are some active Linux/FLOSS news sites such as:

I, as a editor of Weekly News, regularly go around those sites to see if
there are some interesting news on Linux/FLOSS. But to be honest, I
could find only few entries about OSC on those sites. I think that was
one of the reason why Brian felt OSC was almost completely non-existent
in the US tech media.
If an information is aimed at only openSUSE commynity, writing an
article on {news,lizards}.o.o and posting it to opensuse-* lists would
be just enough. But some information should be reached to a much broader
people beyond openSUSE community.
So I'm going to submit openSUSE related news to those sites when I think
they might be interesting also for people beyond openSUSE community. If
you know other active news sites in addition to above 3 sites, please
let me know. ;-)
But since I'm just an volunteer and my time is limited, that cannot be
done only by me. Your help will be always welcomed. :-)

I don't think we should assume control of the group as it was pretty much decided earlier this year that we weren't going to do that. But we do need to figure out a way to work together. 2) Time constraints are the biggest factor. The weekly edition gets worked on over the weekend and churned out before the weekend is over. Many of us don't reallly have an interest in spending our weekends working on some project when we have other things to do and need to actually have a life. So, even if we requested a better opportunity to review and give a thumbs-up, how do we fit that into our schedule? The reason why we proofread, finalize and release new Issues over the weekend is very simple - Saturday night is the most convenient time for having proofreading session for (ATM) one and only proofreader (me). Please remember, I'm neither a Novell employee nor receive a payment for contributing openSUSE at all. I'm just a volunteer and have my own job on weekdays. You wrote 'Many of us don't really have an interest in spending our weekends working on some project ...', but for me, 'I don't really have time for working on some project on weekdays'. If someone says 'I can join the editorial review session, if it is held between XX:00 and YY:00 on [Mon-Fri]day', we can shift the schedule. When is the 'better opportunity' depends on who will actually do the task and when is the most convenient time for them. But don't forget, Weekly News will be published every week. ;-) In my case, I spend 2-3 hours for proofreading every Saturday - no summer vacation, no Christmas, no New Year holidays, no Easter, no Halloween ... (I'm not a Christian, though. :-P) The same can be said for Sascha. Anyway, if there's no one who will step forward to be involved in, this discussion will serve for nothing. I hope someone will raise his/her hand. ;-) I'm not sure about this - perhaps openSUSE News does need to be fairly 'business oriented' but most newspapers carry opinon pieces, and I enjoy reading them myself. Perhaps if the section was appropriately titled, and carried a 'views are those of the authors, not openSUSE ' disclaimer? That can be a solution. But the borderline here might be fuzzy too. Imagine if someone will write a blog post *as a part of openSUSE project*, will it be a personal view, or a view of openSUSE?
