Re: Oracle Applications Development Database Refresh

2002-07-05 Thread jared . still

Thanks John!

I *think* this is 10.7 character.

I don't believe it is NCA ( isn't that the Java Workstation version?
You know, the one at Open World that never worked? ;)

How would I identify Smart Client?

Thanks,

Jared

I haven't read any official documentation for 10.7 'cloning' (as the
Apps-aware call it). However, it is pretty simple compared to 11.0 and 11i
if this is NOT 10.7 NCA. In addition, this also changes if you are using
10.7 Character, 10.7 SC (Smart Client) or 10.7 NCA, so do let us know. In
simple terms, you will have to do the following (assuming you have a copy -
hot or cold - of the DB):

On the Application/Database server side:

1. Copy over the APPL_TOP/Custom top (basically all owned by 'applmgr') and
Database files to the respective locations. Adjust the environment variables
for log/TOP locations including APPLCSF (conc. program output logs) and any
Custom tops. I assume you already have ORACLE_HOME copied over and setup
(with envs, etc.) - this does not change frequently.

2. Change the listener ports for the database, FNDFS listener and OEORPC
listener if required.

3. Startup the Database and listeners - recover to a point in time if from a
hot backup. Do NOT startup the Concurrent Managers yet. Delete _ANY_ DBlinks
that point to other production systems - this may cause some Invalid
objects, and you may have to ignore/fix them as the case may be.

4. Change the global name (alter database rename global_name ..)

5. Reset all Alerts from 'Enabled' to 'Disabled'. This can be achieved
either from the Alerts form or using the following SQL (unless you want to
do this off the Alerts screen!):

update applsys. alr_alerts set enabled_flag = 'N' where enabled_flag = 'Y';
This will disable all alerts and avoid erroneous messages to
Users/Functional folks.

6. Update all pending jobs to reset copies to print. This is to avoid
double-printing when you (or someone else) turn on some of the Concurrent
jobs back on - at least you can avoid confusion from double-printing of
reports. This can be done using the following SQL:

UPDATE APPS.FND_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS
SET NUMBER_OF_COPIES = 0;

7. Startup your forms interface (not the Concurrent Manager) and go to the
Profiles screen (or the Profile->System form). Modify profile options:
Query OE: Transaction Manager - change to the OEORPC listener name
Query Site Name - change to the right name (this changes the Help->About
information in forms)

8. Change the APPS/APPLSYS and other schema passwords. Open a SQL*Plus using
'SYSTEM' or a DBA account in a separate window. Open the
'Security->ORACLE->Register' (Oracle Users) screen. Enter the Password twice
for each of APPLSYS, APPS and schemas and Commit, making sure that you
change the corresponding Oracle user (APPLSYS/APPS/Schema) as you change
them. It is critical to commit this, and make sure that this does not break
inbetween - as the APPLSYS/APPS password combination needs to be correct and
match in both the internal FND tables as well as the SYS.USER$ tables... You
may also have to reset the SYSADMIN passwords.

9. I would also cancel all pending concurrent jobs before starting up the
Concurrent Manager, but that is something that you will need to agree with
the functional folks. If this is Ok, you can use the following SQL:
update apps.fnd_concurrent_requests
set phase_code = 'C',
status_code = 'D'
where phase_code = 'P';

10. Startup the Concurrent Managers (using 'applmgr' account!) and watch the
logs in $APPLCSF/log/*.mgr for any problems/issues.

11. You may also choose to resize the Queue sizes on the Dev instance. This
reduces the number of processes that start up from the CM. This can be done
from the 'Concurrent Managers' screen (Concurrent->Manager->Define) - click
on the 'Work Shifts' button and change the value in 'Processes'. The
Internal Manager will reduce this number at the next cycle.

Depending on your customizations and environment, you may have to perform
some additional steps. I have not included the steps for the Client side : I
will have to know what you use and can suggest what needs to be done. This
is off some of our internal documentation - I have given you the essentials
that should make sense in a general Apps installation.

Oracle Applications Development Database Refresh

2002-07-05 Thread Jared . Still

Fellow listers,

In addition to the usual SAP system that runs most of our company, we have
Oracle Apps 10.7 HR. For some reason the HR folks didn't like the SAP HR
module, so I have SAP and Oracle Apps.

The problem is a request I have to refresh the Dev database from the
Production database.

If you can point me to the correct documentation for this, I'll take a
look at it.

There's a lot of stuff to wade through in the docs and MetaLink, and I'd
rather just
read documentation that's actually relevant.

Thanks,

Jared

Add to that the cost of getting there (Orlando FL for 2003),
transportation to/from the airport
hotel (4-6 nights at around $200/night depending on what hotel you stay at)
some meals (lunch is usually provided, some evening events include enough
food for dinner)

That said, I hope that doesn't scare your company off. IMHO, this is the
best investment you can make in your DBA's. (I can't speak for developers.)
Both years I've gone, I was frustrated because there were more sessions that
I wanted to attend that I could since they were at the same time. This
year, there were no sessions that I attended that I didn't learn something
from. Many of the sessions generated a list of "to do as soon as I get back
to the office".

Hope to see you there.

Re: insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving

2002-07-05 Thread Jared . Still

I'm doing this from memory, so you may want to RTFM
to verify this information.

With a non-parallel insert, you will need to use the APPEND
hint to avoid generating redo. Read the fine documentation
as to why this is necessary.

With a parallel INSERT, the data will all be APPENDed
by default anyway, so the logs will not be generated.

Subject:insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving

Hi all.

I've been trying to copy a 20mil rows table between
two databases via insert as select statement. I
have dropped all the indices and ran in nologging mode
with hints forcing parallel execution of both ISERT
and SELECT. While checking the archive directory I
have noticed that the archives have been created every
2 minutes. I have cancelled the load and noticed that
I forgot to alter system enable parallel dml so in
effect the load was going in sequential mode. Then I
reran my script having added the alter system
statement and there we no archive created while it
ran.
So it looks like even without the indices a sequential
insert as select nologging still creates the archives
wihle the parallel - doesn't. Does it sound right? If
so, why. I thought the nollogging and with no indices
shouldn't produce any log info regardless of the mode.

TIA

RE: 2003 IOUG Meeting

2002-07-05 Thread Stephen Andert

Add to that the cost of getting there (Orlando FL for 2003),
transportation to/from the airport
hotel (4-6 nights at around $200/night depending on what hotel you stay
at)
some meals (lunch is usually provided, some evening events include enough
food for dinner)

That said, I hope that doesn't scare your company off.  IMHO, this is
the best investment you can make in your DBA's.  (I can't speak for
developers.)  Both years I've gone, I was frustrated because there were
more sessions that I wanted to attend that I could since they were at the same
time.  This year, there were no sessions that I attended that I didn't
learn something from.  Many of the sessions generated a list of "to do as
soon as I get back to the office".

Hope to see you there.

Re: insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving

2002-07-05 Thread Jack Silvey

Gene,

This sounds right.

Standard insert as append does freelist block checking
and generates redo. Parallel DML generates minimial
redo, just for the new temp segments being created,
not for the datablock updates. This is one reason it
is so fast.

Index changes are always logged, even in PDML and
append modes.

One way to consider would be to alter indexes to
unusable and rebuild with nologging and compute
statistics clauses. This way, your load is fast, you
generate minimal redo, and your indexes are balanaced
and have good stats afterwards.

A space consideration with PDML and dictionary managed
tablespaces - each PQ process in your PDML is going to
have its own extent. This extent will begin life with
a size=initial, but will have the empty space trimmed
off at the end of the write, leaving an odd size
extent. Since you are doing PDML, you might have these
extents close together, and when the trim occurs, it
will leave odd sized holes in between and throw off
your space managment strategy. I don't believe that
LMT tablespaces have this issue.

jack

insert nologging parallel/noparallel and archiving

2002-07-05 Thread Gurelei

TIA

You might want to try and use the quotemeta function, to create a regex
variable, which backslashes all alphanumerics within string variables, eg:

my $HeaderAttributes = "abc|defgh|123";
print "$HeaderAttributes\n";
my $Delimiter = "|";
my $regex = quotemeta($Delimiter);
(@Fields) = split(/$regex/, $HeaderAttributes);
print "Delimiter = $Delimiter Field[0] = $Fields[0]\n";

At this end, this produced:

abc|defgh|123
Delimiter = | Field[0] = abc

In a reckless bid towards on-topic status, I can only say that there's
much
more of this kind of thing in Appendix C of "Perl for Oracle DBAs", 'The
Essential Guide to Regular Expressions'! :-)

HTH! :)

Rgds,
AndyD

  NO, you dont need to DROP the sequence, here is demo code i used to
  reset a sequence(this resets it back to 1).

  SQL> drop sequence test_seq;

  Sequence dropped.

  SQL> create sequence test_seq;

  Sequence created.

  SQL> SQL> declare  2   seq_hold_var
  number;  3  begin  4   for i in 1 .. 10
  loop  5   select test_seq.nextval into seq_hold_var from
  dual;  6   end loop;  7  end;
  8  /

  PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

  SQL> SQL> select test_seq.nextval from dual;

  NEXTVAL
  --

  11

  SQL> SQL> alter sequence test_seq increment by -10;

  Sequence altered.

  SQL> SQL> select test_seq.nextval from dual;

  NEXTVAL

Thanks! I should have mentioned I have checked the IOUG page, but can not find
the actual cost of attending. Or is it FREE to IOUG members, and therefore, I
need to have my company pay for memberships for a couple of people to attend?

thanks!

of object manipulation: handling sequences, writing pure

also to be implemented into ORA one day i hope

You might want to try and use the quotemeta function, to create a regex
variable, which backslashes all alphanumerics within string variables, eg:

my $HeaderAttributes = "abc|defgh|123";
print "$HeaderAttributes\n";
my $Delimiter = "|";
my $regex = quotemeta($Delimiter);
(@Fields) = split(/$regex/, $HeaderAttributes);
print "Delimiter = $Delimiter Field[0] = $Fields[0]\n";

At this end, this produced:

abc|defgh|123
Delimiter = | Field[0] = abc

In a reckless bid towards on-topic status, I can only say that there's much
more of this kind of thing in Appendix C of "Perl for Oracle DBAs", 'The
Essential Guide to Regular Expressions'! :-)

HTH! :)

Rgds,
AndyD

Don't escape if it's in a variable.

Ask yourself why you have to escape it when used literally.

Look up the '\Q' metachar (e.g., perldoc perlre and search for \Q).

Since PostrgeSQL is not as reliable and scalable as Oracle is, at the
moment, I wouldn't, from DBA perspective, use it for any seriuos project. :)
and there are not many developer's tools. :)

I would better vote for other new features... :)))

Perl Question - Split using |

2002-07-05 Thread Celine John

After seeing the e-mails about "Perl for Oracle-DBAs",
I presume, my question wouldn't be completely
inappropriate for this list.
So if you Oracle Gurus, can help me with this Perl
problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
I have a problem with "split" when my delimiter is
"|".
I know that if I escape the pipe, split should work,
that is only when it is a literal like
split(/\|/, "abc|def|123)

But when my delimiter is to be dynamically read from a
file, I have it in a variable. Then this escaping
stuff doesn't work..
eg:
my $HeaderAttributes = "abc|defgh|123";
print "$HeaderAttributes\n";
my $Delimiter = "\|";
(@Fields) = split(/$Delimiter/, $HeaderAttributes);
print "Delimiter = $Delimiter Field[0] =
$Fields[0]\n";

prints
a
instead of
abc.

Does somebody have a solution to this.
Thanks much.

Re: Adding Control files

2002-07-05 Thread ltiu

Create Controlfile is only used during database recovery when all
controlfiles are lost. This is not the Oracle recommended way of copying
controlfiles since the newly created controlfile may not have the exact same
parameters as the old one. Unpredictable results
