RE: SQL Server Q?

2003-06-20 Thread Adrian Roe
Title: OT: SQL Server Q?

sp configure 'user
connections'

This
is an advanced option (believe it or not), so you may have to do
"sp configure 'show
advanced options', 1" before you do "sp configure 'user connections'".
Alternatively you can just run SELECT
@@MAX CONNECTIONS

Returns something like this
name
minimum maximum config value
run value --- ---
--- --- user
connections
0
32767
0
0
Run
value is what's configured at present. To change "sp configure 'user
connections', 1000" (or whatever)

You
will need to stop/start the database to make the change take
affect.

Hi all,

Has anyone done the upgrade from 8.1.7 32 bit to 9.2.0.3 64 bit? I'm trying
to determine whether it's necessary to perform any other steps than the
regular upgrade process.

Note 62290.1 seems to imply that no other steps are required, but this is
contradicted elsewhere and it's proving almost impossible to get a straight
answer from Oracle. There's one hilarious Forum exchange on metalink
(search on 32 bit Sahoo) where the tech manages to avoid saying anything
other than read the documentation.

So, any advice, experience, or pointers to other articles out there?

Thanks,

Looks fine. We only have the following entries on a 9i database..

dispatchers = (protocol = TCP)(dispatchers = 6)

max_dispatchers = 12

Works fine, we ended up commenting out local_listener. How long have you
waited for the dispatchers to register ? It does not happen instantly. Have
you tried lsnrctl reload ?

OK, Someone dope slap me! I added the following to my init.ora file

the
listener (also 8.1.7.0). I've already done the RTFM and MetaLink RTFM but
can't
see the problem.

mts_servers=5
mts_max_dispatchers=10
mts_max_servers=40
service_names=05

mts_dispatchers=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(DISPATCHERS=4)
local_listener=(address_list=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=ipc)(KEY=05))

Thanks for the second set of eyes. BTW, the end result would be to have all

From my Sybase years I recall that the ODBC drivers were sourced from

I am planning on using it to move about 20GB of data from a Sybase 11.x

Babu - Congratulations on the project! Is this database especially large or
are you facing severe restrictions in terms of the amount of time the data
is unavailable to your users? Are there any unusual objects in SQL Server
that will be difficult to create in Oracle? I think Oracle provides a
migration tool, but I haven't used it. Usually I follow a procedure such as:

1. Create objects in Oracle.
2. Dump data from SQL Server to a flat file.
3. Load the data with SQL*Loader.
4. Verify the data, application.
5. Prepare for production cut-over.
6. Truncate Oracle tables.
7. Dump data from SQL Server to a flat file and load with SQL*Loader.
8. Shut down SQL*Server.
9. Verify application is ready to go live.

RE: migration from Sybase to Oracle

Best option is to use bcp to get the data out of Sybase ino a flat file,
then use SQL*Loader to get the data into some Oracle staging tables. You can
then use pl/sql procs to move the data to it's final destination.

RE: Middle Tier spawning sessions, possible performance issues

2003-01-30 Thread Adrian Roe
250 connections from the middle tier does sound a bit suspect, way over the
top. I'm assuming 'spawns' relates to establishing connections as and when
required and then disconnecting when done. I think you will find that there
is quite an Oracle overhead in handling all of the connect/disconnect
requests that Oracle is coping with in a non connection pooled environment.

Ideally, you shouldn't be spawning connection from the middle tier. You
should look at connection pooling ie. configure a fixed pool of connections
per middle tier server, 20/40/whatever (and have more than one middle tier
server, load balanced) and have these connect when the app/web server starts
up. You then round robin the connections to the clients when required, and
throw them back in the pool when finished.

R - I haven't yet been the victim of .net (thankfully), and I hope someone
with direct experience will reply. But just in case, I'll mention a couple
of ideas.
Try to sample the SQL that is being inflicted on Oracle. Microsoft
interfaces tend to have default settings for the lowest common denominator
(like accessing a flat file). I've seen them do stuff like pull the entire
table over just to verify that it hasn't changed. This sort of thing can
usually be corrected by using other than default settings.

I'm far more of a developer than a DBA, but when someone told me this it set
off a big red light in my head.

We are using an Oracle Backend with a .net front front. One of our .net guys
told me that the middle tier they are using 'spawns' sessions.

We have 2 pretty distinct skillsets here so fixing the middle tier is
probably way beyond my pervue. However, they told me that in a recent demo,
the performance degraded overtime. Its my understanding that generally this
is caused by one of two things.

1. Failure to use Bind Variables... we are using them everywhere.

2. Too many sessions.

Am I on the right track here? How much would shared server mode help? This
may be an enormous issue since they are expecting 250 contiguous users.
Another option I tossed around was moving as much logic from the client side
to the database to avoid the session spawning. I know that generally this is
a good idea, but its difficult when the database people are lousy in C# and
the .net people our lousy in PL/SQL and SQL.

Any opinions?

SELECT ... FROM

RE: RMAN and TSM

2002-10-10 Thread Adrian Roe

Ian,

You need TDP installed on all target nodes, however you don't need TDP
installed on the node where the catalog resided. Also, you need only one
tdpo.opt per node, but don't need one for the catalog ('cos TDP will not be
installed there).

We have always used the default of adsmorc for TDPO_FS.

You can run RMAN from the target servers, I guess this is the usual approach
for most folks. However, you can also run RMAN from a central server (so all
backups are scheduled centrally) and connect to all targets over the wire
via TNS.

I'm trying to use RMAN and TSM to backup multiple databases spread across
various nodes with some nodes hosting more than one database. The RMAN
catalog database will reside on a node different from any of the nodes
hosting the other databases. I have long used ADSM without the RMAN
clothing to backup the databases. I have convinced the SA's to move on to
TSM, and now I need to add the RMAN adornments.

I assume I need the SA's to install TDP for Oracle on all the nodes
requiring RMAN backup. Do I also need to install it on the machine which
will host the catalog database. That database will undergo cold backup
using naked TSM. The same question applies to the tdpo.opt file. Do I
need multiple TDPO_FS values and multiple tdpo.opt files to hold them.

I am also assuming I will start RMAN from one of the databases requiring
backup and connect also to the RMAN catalog. Is this typical.

RE: rman question(allocating channels)

2002-08-28 Thread Adrian Roe

Joe,

We only write out to tapes, so one channel
equals one tape drive, each extra channel goes and gets another drive. Not too
sure about disks, I guess it depends on I/O bandwith. Two channels will be
faster than one, if the disk can cope with the input from two channels then
maybe it makes sense. Best thing is to try it out and compare
timings.

I've tried to find this in the docs to no avail.

If I'm writing out an RMAN backup to one disk(yes this is not ideal),
then does it make sense to allocate multiple channels?

Are multiple channels related to CPUs or to destinations?

  thanks, joe

I have Oracle 8.1.7 running on NT. I do cold backups nightly and have a
batch file that is called by the NT 'AT' scheduler. I recently changed some
lines of commands in the batch file and since then when the batch file is
executed by 'AT' only the lines that I did not edit are executed.
If I execute the batch file from the command prompt it works fine. I
deleted the job from 'AT' and then entered it back in but still getting this
odd behavior of only executing the commands that I did not edit. Our SA's
know nothing about 'AT' so they are of no help.
Has anyone else seen this odd behavior in the 'AT' function in Windoze? I
know you find it hard to believe that something can be weird in Windoze.
;o)
And yes, I am soon planning on learning RMAN and do hot backups. I have the
8i Backup and Recovery Handbook for my reading pleasure. I see the app that
is being used going to a 24X7 schedule. Now it is only used during the day.

Thanks,

COMMENTS of Hardware Engineer :-
===
From the perfpmr data collected on July 5th and it has
been analysed by our Labs.
The performance degradation is caused by fsync() routines called by Oracle
processes.
In 5 secs trace, fsync was called 276 times and consumed 21.39% CPU system
time.
The fsync() blocks the process until all the dirty pages are written to
the physical disks.
We checked the old perfpmr data collected with Oracle 7.3.4.5, it
doesn't have this issue.
Oracle has a fix to address the fsync problem on 8.1.7.2 (64-Bit) 8.1.7.4
(32-Bit).

-

WE HAVE INITIATED WITH ORACLE CORP FOR A PATCH ON 8.1.7.2 32-BIT.

Nevertheless Any Other Ideas just in case the Patch Does NOT bring Down the
%wio
Enough ?

NOTE - High %wio has been Observed only on AIX O.S. (NOT Other O.S.) post
migration
to Oracle 8.1.7.2

RE: Re:MTS performance is too bad.

2002-06-27 Thread Adrian Roe

Bunyamin,

You probably only need about 2 dispatchers. I think Oracle suggest 1
dispatcher for every 1000 users but that figure seems a little low to me,
I'd work on the basis of 1 dispatcher for every 500.

As for shared servers, work on the basis of 1 for every 10 users.

Try this

mts_servers = 5
mts_max_servers = 10 (increase if needed)
dispatchers = 2

I have 800 MB of shared pool and not setted large_pool_size.
50 dispathers, 100 processes and 750 max processes.

What can I do ? Have you got an idea. How can I check the mts

Well yes it will as you will not have the overhead of managing all of those
unnecessary processes. However, as Michael Sale has correctly pointed out,
you don't need MTS for 50 connections.

Why don't you create a linked server in SQL Server that points at the Oracle

RE: RMAN with Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle

Yep,
we use it. You need to install TDP on every target server and then relink Oracle
to use Tivoli's libobk.so (or libobk.a). This applies to version 2.1, version
2.2 does not require the relink stage.

RE: Converting Inner join in MS-SQL to Oracle SQL syntax

2001-08-06 Thread Adrian Roe

Yep, looks good (I'm a SQL7/2000 DBA).

INNER JOIN etc.. is not SQL Server specific, It's just ANSI standard.

If you have.
select col1,col2,col3
from table1 inner join table2 on table1.id=table2.id

you can then change this to the following to get it to work on Oracle

select col1,col2,col3
from table1, table2
where table1.id=table2.id

In short, a Micro$oft T-SQL inner join is a PL/SQL regular join. So
(making a few assumptions about the structure of the tables), here is my
crack at a rewrite:

select KO.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID
  from KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECT KO
 where KO.KS_AVAILABLE = 0
   and not exists (select CS.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID
 from KS_CONCEPTSTRING CS
, KS_CONCEPT C
where CS.KS_CONCEPTID = C.KS_CONCEPTID
  and KO.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID = CS.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID
  and C.KS_CONCEPTTYPEID = '2');

A developer has sent me a MS-SQL statement that he recieved from a vendor.
He would like to convert this to run on Oracle. It's pretty close already
 but I'm
having trouble with the inner join.

Is there a kind soul familiar with MS-SQL that could convert this over to
 the
 right 8.0.4 Oracle syntax?

 select KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID from KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECT
 where KS_AVAILABLE = 0 and not exists
(select KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID from KS_CONCEPTSTRING inner join
 KS_CONCEPT
 on KS_CONCEPTSTRING.KS_CONCEPTID = KS_CONCEPT.KS_CONCEPTID
 where KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECT.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID =
 KS_CONCEPTSTRING.KS_KNOWLEDGEOBJECTID
 and KS_CONCEPTTYPEID = '2')

I mean just that--that Oracle will look in its free extent cache for the
first free extent the tablespace that is the same size as that which it
needs. There is no particular ordering first. And that would make it
appear to be distributing extents equally among the files, but not always.
Sometimes it will also look, as another lister has pointed out, as if Oracle
is always going to the biggest datafile in the tablespace.

cache). Basically, Oracle will look for a free extent equal to the size
of
the one it needs to allocate(see Doc ID #69343.1 on MetaLink of details
on
Oracle's extent algorithm). The first one on the list, regardless of the
datafile, gets picked first. If one of exact size doesn't exist, Oracle
will
then split an existing larger extent. This larger extent, again, will be
the
first one found in SYS.FET$ which can provide the necessary space. So,
it
can at times appear to be round-robin allocation or one-file-at-a-time
when,
in point of fact, it is much more complex.

Jeremiah is right. Depending on the version of the database this is an
   imaginary problem.
I have been using this 'auto round robin' feature since 8.0.6 (HP-UX
32-bit). Just did quite a bit of re-organization involving
partitioning a
large table and used this auto round robin extent allocation feature
to
   spread out I/O...

Anyone seen this in any lower versions ??

   Cheers!

It appears we may be discussing an imaginary problem. At least on
the
version I am using (8.1.6.2 HP-UX 64 bit), Oracle round robins among
files with available space automatically. It does not just fill up
one datafile and move on to the next.

I did a little experiment:

SQL create tablespace jeremiah_temp1
  1 datafile '/tmp/jeremiah_temp-01.dbf' size 10m,
  2 '/tmp/jeremiah_temp-02.dbf' size 10m,
  3 '/tmp/jeremiah_temp-03.dbf' size 10m,
  4   '/tmp/jeremiah_temp-04.dbf' size 10m;

Tablespace created.

SQL create table foobar
  1 (baz varchar2(10))
  2 storage (initial 32k next 32k pctincrease 0 maxextents 4)
  3  tablespace jeremiah_temp1;

Table created.

SQL insert into foobar (baz)
  1  select substr(trash,1,10) from garbage where rownum = 6000;

6000 rows created.

SQL commit;

Commit complete.

SQL select segment_name, e.bytes/1024 kb, file_name
  1 from dba_extents e, dba_data_files d
  2 where e.file_id = d.file_id
  3  and e.segment_name = 'FOOBAR';

SEGMENT_NAME KB FILE_NAME

 -- -- --
FOOBAR 32 /tmp/jeremiah_temp-01.dbf
FOOBAR 32 /tmp/jeremiah_temp-02.dbf
FOOBAR 32 /tmp/jeremiah_temp-03.dbf
FOOBAR 32 /tmp/jeremiah_temp-04.dbf

So, it looks like it round robins automatically, and there is no
need to do so manually. I don't know which version of Oracle was
the
first to do this.

sort_area_size + temp tablespace extent sizing

2001-04-24 Thread Adrian Roe

Hi List,

Quick question regarding temp tablespace extent sizing.

I have always assumed that the extent size for a temporary tablespace needs
to be equal to the size that sort_area_size is set to. A sort that can't fit
into memory then goes and grabs temp tablespace extents of a size equal to
sort_area_size. However, I have read somewhere that the extent size should
be equal to sort_area_size + block size (the block being used for header
infomation or something like that) eg. 8k block size and 64k sort area size
results in 72K temp tablespace extent size.

So, assume I have a sort area size of 128K and block size of 8k, do I need
to set temp tablespace extent sizes to 128K or 136K, or doesn't it really
matter.

Thanks,

Ade

RE: SQL Server basic sources of info?

2001-04-02 Thread Adrian Roe

Chris,

Here's some stuff from a SQL Server DBA who is now learning the joys of
Oracle.

1. Some useful links (swynk is probably the best)
http:/www.microsoft.com/sql
http://msdn.microsoft.com/sqlserver/
http://www.swynk.com/sysapps/sql.asp
http://www.sqlmag.com
http://www.mssqlserver.com

Get a subscription to Microsoft TechNet - monthly CD's of info on all MS
products, SQL7/2000 included. A lot of the stuff in here can be found online
at http://www.microsoft.com/servers/sup/support.asp. Also use Books Online
(ie. the manuals)

2. Copy of the software - got to buy it I'm afraid. Can download evaluation
software from the Microsoft site or just go out and buy a SQL 7/2000 book,
most give away an 120 day evaluation copy.

3. Mailing list - http://ls.swynk.com/scripts/lyris.pl

4. Must buy book - Inside SQL Server 7/2000 by Kalen Delaney.

Have fun.

I just found out that I will be the DBA on a SQL Server 7 project, and I
have no SQL Server experience. I am just "overwhelmed" with excitement. At
any rate, I was hoping someone could answer a few basic questions about
sources of info...

* What would be the equivalent "SQL Server" Metalink and Technet websites
be? I am assuming that this would be somewhere on www.microsoft.com.

* On Technet I can download various versions of Oracle and play at home.
Where can I find a copy of SQL Server so that I can do the same.

* Any equivalent Fatcity/LazyDBA list servers for SQL Server?

* Any must-have, highly-recommended SQL Server books?

Many thanks for the info!!!

P.S. Rachel, is there any chance you are finished with writing that SQL

RE: Solaris ODBC drivers

2001-03-30 Thread Adrian Roe

http://www.swynk.com/faq/sql/sqlfaq_connectivity.asp#NonMS

Checkout the above link from the SQL Server FAQ which lists some options for
talking to SQL6.5/7 from UNIX boxes. Best best probably is to get hold of
some Sybase Open Client drivers as these should still work with MSSQL.

I'm currently testing the heterogeous services between
Oracle 816/Solaris and SQL Server 6.5.

We're using Merant ODBC driver which was bundled with
Informatica Powermart.

I'm able to read a table without problem in SQL Server
from Oracle.

My goal is to be able to execute a stored proc on SQL
Server from Oracle.

I am looking for ODBC drivers that will allow me
to connect from an Oracle database (8.1.6) on Sun
 Solaris(Sparc) 2.6 to a SQLServer database on
 Windows NT 4.0.
I plan to use Oracle's Heterogeneous Services using
generic connectivity in conjunction with ODBC.
Can anyone provide me with information on where to
 get these drivers?
 Thanks to any responders.
