Raghu,

You can just specify the tape device as the target file.
One important difference is the optional volsize parameter which allows you
to specify the capacity of the tape drive. Export/import will then prompt
for the next tape when required.

i.e.

exp username/password file=/dev/rmt0 volsize=100M other options

imp username/password file=/dev/rmt0 volsize=100M other options

Backup the archivelogs on a schedule and delete them from the archivelog
destination. Rman has a command to do this, if you use rman.

So yesterday the archive log dest disk filled up on one of our prduction
systems causing the Oracle DB to halt as it's supposed to. Disk space was
tight and there was a bit of data loading done. Anyhow I freed up disk
space on relevant drive and proceeded to server console to press the OK
button to allow archiving to restart. However, the console was locked by a
PC Anywhere session which prevented me from getting to the console window
with archive dest full message. Anyhow ended up having to bounce the
database. Apart from throttling the user who set the PC anywhere lock on
the console and insisting it not be done again I'm wondering did I have any
other options apart from a database bounce to overcome this problem?.

Raghu,
We use BMC - PATROL for database monitoring. However, we removed all the
out-of-box actions by it, and replaced those with our own where ever
needed.
We do not let Patrol change anything in the database (for example,
allocating space when it detects extent problems). Instead, it e-mails and
pages the responsible DBA by running our scripts that figure out who is the
responsible DBA. We also use only about 15 or so parameters for Patrol
monitoring (I think patrol has about 50 or so). It's an expensive solution
for the things we currently do with it, but does it solve the problem of
keeping up with scripts etc for new servers and databases. We have a very
dynamic environment with 100s of databases on multiple platforms (VAX
VMS/Alpha, SUN, HP, AIX etc).. Patrol is a right solution for it.

HTH,

Raghu:

What I have found suggests that you are having latch contention on the SORT
EXTENT POOL.

The 510 indicates that a call was made to free a latch that is unowned.
The second parameter is the address for that latch. The third argument is
the type of child latch that the kernel was trying to free.

Oracle processes doing sorting that require access to a sort segment in a
temporary tablespace are coordinated by a SHARED POOL structure called the
SORT EXTENT POOL. This structure contains a description of all of the
active
sort segments and their extents in the sort segment. Access to this
structure is controlled by the SORT EXTENT POOL latch. Your problem could
be
due to latch contention on this latch. You can view the statistics on this
latch by joining v$latch and v$latchname on latch#.

To reduce contention on this latch, increase the extent size by changing
the
NEXT value of the DEFAULT STORAGE clause of the temporary tablespace in
which you are sorting.

If you have good PCTUSED you are safe!! The space will be reused, Other wise

I think this is happening because when you DELETE data the High Water
  Mark(HWM) is not lowered. Essentially
you have not gained any freespace. If possible you could export
remaining
  data truncate table then re-import.

Raghu,

There are differing opinions regarding multiple extents. I subscribe to
the
belief that multiple extents are not a bad thing. The latency between the
extent reads is not a factor until the number of extents reaches ~4000. I
remember reading a white paper on this topic, however I can't tell you
exactly where it is off the top of my head.

If I was the dba for this database, I would be more concerned with
fragmentation and size of extents than the number of extents. If you
understand your data thoroughly, have fairly accurate estimates for growth
and understand the application it is supporting, you can choose your extent
sizes properly and won't have the problem of 4000+ extents. Uniform extent
sizes are optimal to avoid fragmentation.

My choice to avoid fragmentation is the method in the white paper entitled
'How to Stop Defragmenting and Start Living'. I don't know about LMT's,
haven't read up on them, but just from the discussions I've seen on the
list
about them, it looks like may be an implementation of this idea.

Here's another way to look at it: If you think multiple extents are bad,
are you going to create a tablespace with a 6gb datafile for your 6gb
1-extent index and hope it doesn't grow? With larger databases this idea
breaks down very quickly.

HTH, and list, correct me if I am wrong about LMT's. I can always blame it
on the pain killers.

  Hi Guru's

Today seems to be the day for awakenings!

Our temp tablespace is about 10GB and the application
uses up to about 3.5 GB. We had a space issue on the
development box and i tried to reclaim some space by
  resizing the temp tablespace.

But..when i tried to resize the TEMP tablespace i had
ORA-600 errors reported in the log files and i had to
kill the sql session that was performing the resize.

I have not noticed any problems since.

I also tried to drop the temp tablespace with similar
  problems.

What all am i missing? Would appreciate any help in
this regard as we are still up and running and still
need to tackle the space issue.

Hi,
I have no experience of AIX, but to me the error message indicates that you
are creating
data files that are too large. Assuming that you are on a 32 bit system,
make sure that each
datafile is = 2Gb. So if you require tablespaces greater than 2Gb, you
create many datafiles per tablespace.

Raghu,

I would try and create a new tablespace (name it TEMP1, type=temporary)
while running, and alter the user's accounts to point to the new
tablespace.
Wait awhile, and try and drop the old TEMP tablespace.

Seems to me that if there are temporary segments in use, Oracle will not
let
you drop the tablespace.

If all else fails, kick the users off, drop and re-create the TEMP
tablespace.

hope this helps.

Raghu,

You should be able to bring it back to original size if the segments in
that part are not in use. Oracle8i does not release the temp segments once
used until the database is shutdown(someone please correct me coz we have
had this situation). Also if you add any file for the increasing the size
then you won't be able to drop the same without droping the tablespace.

You need to either partition your table or increase the size of temp.

Re: PCTUSED??

2001-06-07 Thread Raghu Kota

Greg

My concern is How can I reuse the deleted space, I have 20Gb Table with 15Gb
Indexes, So I may not touch the table due to massiveness, I can do atleast
indexes rebuild for availing 3-4Gb back. So in that regard pct_used has
greater significance for reusing the space for future insertions.

Thank you all for your responses and valueble input.

Thanks
Raghu.

Subject: Re: PCTUSED??

I have big growing tables has default PCT_USED 40%, But we delete data
some
times one year or 2yrs data. What is optimum value for this parameter??
I
may consider my database is oltp. So how can decide a correct value for
  this???

PCT_USED might not have any effect for you at all.

If you keep inserting rows by date, the blocks will fill with rows where
the
date is the same for every row in the block, or close. Then if the only
time you delete is when you delete an entire year's worth of data, entire
blocks will become empty. That's going to cause them to go on the free
list
no matter what you set PCT_USED to.

As the other reply implied, your main concern may be tables where, after
the
mass deletes, there are many blocks below the high water mark that are
completely empty. This would take up a little disk space until they are
filled, but the main concern would be that full table scans would take as
long after the deletes as before, due to the need to read all blocks up to
the high water mark (empty or full). So if that is a concern you could
reorg the table.

to kill.

SELECT dbo.OWNER||'.'||dbo.OBJECT_NAME Object, dbo.OBJECT_TYPE, vs.SID,
vs.SERIAL#, p.SPID OS_PROCESS, lo.PROCESS, lo.ORACLE_USERNAME,

Subject: Size, what is it?
Date: Fri, 01 Jun 2001 09:41:11 -0800

Hi All,
Being able to lift my head from the problems at my new
job finally. I would like to get some definitions of
what is a large database and the hardware that it is
running on. There are multiple different types of large,
transactions, physical size, number of objects,
number of connections, SGA size, etc.

My current database is a heavy transaction site but small in
   other respects.

Oracle 8.1.7, 150GB physical size, 700MB SGA, 10 GB per day redo,
300-700 OLTP connections at any time all on a SUN E450, 2 CPU's, 4 GB
RAM,
Baydel disk array (RAID 3). The machine is relativiely idle,
or I/O bound, memory starts becomming a limit above 700 connections.

   A previous large database was
Oracle 8.0.5, 50 GB physical, associated with 4 TB of image files
on the filesystem, 350 GB SGA, 2 GB per day redo, 100 DSS connections,
all on a SUN E5000, 6 CPU's 6 GB RAM, many hardware RAID arrays,
machine was CPU bound almost all the time.

Most of the database I have seen have been on machines that are grossly
over powered for the work that they do so I am hoping I can determine
some figures for hardware vs workload based on real data.

Your assistance would be appreciated. Please include as many details
as possible including why you think it is a large database and
   machine utilization.

Also, does anyone have experience with Baydel disk arrays. They seem
to be a happening setup even if they are hardwired RAID 3 :(

TIA
Dave

I have an 8.0.5 data warehouse database in archivelog mode. We run a hot
backup nightly and afterwards we run data loads. Last nights loads
corrupted the database. I want to restore the database to the point
immediately after last nights hot backup. I have never had to do this type
of restore. Can I simply restore all the datafiles, redo logs control
files from last nights backup and restart the database? Or is there more
to
it than that?

Yeah If you use compute statistics your table get locked and will take long
time, But If you use estimate statistics it will be fast But not as
accurate as before. Better to analyze at nights by setting time.

this is not to bring up a heated debate over the two platforms...

I am making a proposal to move the current access 97 databases to an oralce
platform running solaris I would like to put in the proposal a brief
reason
why a UNIX platform will be better than a Windows platform.

the current environment:

MS Access 97 databases running on Compaq server. Databases are about 20GB
in
size...

proposed solution:

Sun E3500
T3 Storage Array
Solaris 8
Oracle 8i

Just need a couple FACTS as to why one would choose UNIX over Windows

Thanks in advance

Hi

I was wondering if anyone here knows of a DB2 list like this one, my
company is getting a DB2 server running on OS390, so now I will have to
support DB2 in addition to Oracle, Sybase and MS sqlserver this gets quite
festive when you are the lone DBA.

Who said unix is unix, not me. I have worked w/ HPUX, Digital Unix, Linux,
and Solaris. All of these support some form of automatic shutdown/startup
scripts found in rc.d directorires, etc.

I can not believe IBM AIX uses the /etc/inittab for the startup and you
have
to create a wrapper script for the shutdown. I found documentation on
metalink note: 1019817.6, that describes this format.

Has anyone found a better way, maybe to emulate the System V method?
Thanks.

Yeah If you knew the fundamentals You can manage any thing, DB2 is cool, I
worked as programmer before in Mainframes, Now Iam working as Oracle DBA,
Iam much happier to work as Db2 DBA. Mainframes like a elephant, You can

either way some times Oracle and DB2 to explore more about yourself.

Maybe now that I've become a damager and have a budget, I'm seriously
considering kicking the Oracle habit. I think they and their ilk helped
put
a lot of dot-com's out of business through their predatory pricing. DB2 is
looking very attractive...and I'm having tons of fun with Postgres at home.

;-)

The thing is, there is no point in becoming married to any technology.
Things change...and a good designer, programmer or DBA can transfer their
skills easily, because to be GOOD you have to understand the fundamentals.

Sorry, feeling philosophical today...

Isn't that utterly ridiculous. If you didn't call the 2nd server a
"failover" server and just manually moved over the filesystems and net
address, you wouldn't need a 2nd license! But if you automate the process
with failover software, you do! The database and software are only ever
going to be on one server at a time so what's the big deal?

Oracle licensing has gotten so ridiculous that at our shop they've pretty
much priced themselves out of the picture for all new databases. I suspect
my managers aren't the only ones looking more seriously at SQL 2000 these
days either. I'd look for Oracle to lose market share over the next 18
months. Not because SQL is better (it isn't), but the price performance
ratio is much more acceptable.

Do you mean that PCTUSED-100 PCTFREE-5 will help utilise the

Will PCTUSED affect only future blocks or existing ones too.

Also, will increasing PCTUSED affect system speed?

First of all, as Joe Testa said - if you partitioned this table by date
-
let say one partition per month - you can truncate partitions that you
  don't
need anymore. Second - if this option is not available - let say that
you
need delete most but not all records from specific partition - you can
create temporary table, select into this table all records that
  should not
be deleted, truncate partition and then select into partition all
records
from temporary table. And last case - if you need to delete let
  say 30-50%
of the recors and this table does not have a lot of deletes in everyday
activity and most deletes are batch in the end of month or some other
period - you can increase value of PCTUSED to 100-PCTFREE-5.

We have a few tables which are growing very fast due to large no of

The problem is that the table does not free the space even

How can we re-claim the unused space which got created due to

How do we ensure that future inserts are done in this unused space?

Re: Re-claiming the space from Table after deleteion

2001-03-09 Thread Raghu Kota

Hi Rafi

This is the problem many big databases facing!!If you clean up the database
every year and reorganizing the database You would't have see this scenario.
For the matter fact iam also facing same problem, My one table grown like
22G, I simply can't do any thing?? Iam doing just for Indexes Rebuild for
getting what ever space I can avail. As you said you deleted 40% of data!!
You can reorganize your Indexes to avail some space.

Other wise Export to Tape and reimport it, But here again problem when you
say compress=y, due to heavy data Its another big headche??

May be our friends give some ideas???

Thanks
Raghu.

Dear All,

   Platform: Solaris 2.6, Oracle: 7.3.4.0

We have a few tables which are growing very fast due to large no of
insertions. But the data gets obselete after a month and we use a
procedure to delete the obselete data from the tables.

The problem is that the table does not free the space even after the
deletion of 40% of the data.

How can we re-claim the unused space which got created due to deletion?

How do we ensure that future inserts are done in this unused space?

[We can not try exp/imp or truncate option
due to the huge size high activity and
   online use of the tables].

Kind Regards and thanks to all there,

Rafi Ahmad

RE: No record in import help me please :..(

2001-03-05 Thread Raghu Kota

Yeah, Its simple the two paramets giving you trouble!!

show=y (it won't import any thing, It just show you it can work or not!!)

destroy=y(Once you imported it, It will destroy the data of that copy)

That is reason you can see the skipping...due to show=y

I believe the SHOW=Y parameter is causing the problem. That does not do an
import but rather lists the table/index/grants etc details held on the
export.dmp
REmove that parameter and try the fromuser to user parameters or the full
=y
parameter

Hi Jesse

Your insight is good, But due to all these problems(One controller) we
could't enable archiving. So we are trying to reduce the overhead !! So the
what ever minimum LGWR work will done okay...I think Iam correct

Any way thanks to all people for understanding my problem

H...I don't know how pounding a single drive with two threads instead
of
one would help, but it could be tried. I would think that the LGWR would
be
the big complainer in a 1-disk config, instead of the DBWR. Or at least I
think LGWR would complain more often...

My post was simply to point out that the error message in TOAD about
"Number
of DB_FILES set too high" was inaccurate. And as the "Tuning" stuff in
TOAD
has been redone, at least in the latest TOAD v7 Beta, this error message
won't be a hassle too much longer.

Long live Toadman Jim! :)

If I am completely off the wall here just slap me around a
  little bit. But
couldn't you play with the init parameteres DBWR_IO_SLAVES or
DB_WRITER_PROCESSES to help improve write performance? I
  mean, I agree with
Ross, there is only one disk, but maybe it could help a little to help
  simulate asynchronous I/O?

Actually, that message is invalid for Oracle8 DBs. From what
  I can gather,
  the DB_FILES init.ora parameter only
potentially affected DBWR performance in Oracle7. In
  Oracle8, it ain't
  true.

Remember, the DBWRs write dirty buffers (data in memory that has been
modified from it's counterpart in a datafile) from the buffer
  cache (memory)
to the datafiles (disk). In O7, the DBWR I/O clump size, or
  how many dirty
blocks could be written at once (also sometimes referred to
  as the DBWR's
"internal write batch size"), was calculated as:

  DB_FILE_SIMULTANEOUS_WRITES*DB_FILES/2.

In O8, the DBWR I/O clump size is static, and is different
  from platform to
platform. Thus, for Oracle8, the advise to change DB_FILES is bogus.

  HTH!

  not a dbwriter problem.
on a "single-disk wonder", your best
bet is to DUMP all indexes on loadable
tables, then load your data, then rebuild
  the indexes.
of course, that might take just as long.
any possiblity of getting more disk?
  like, several? a raid controller?

shutdown abort also removes in case your database crash ,connect internal
and shutdown abort will remove it or alternately deletion is the only
option. If it remains there, database will not start.

One other point, If you manually delete this file the DB will crash. To
some
good degree it totally disappears in 8i.

No removal is required. It is generated as a result of your database and
goes away when you shutdown database. Oracle uses this file in it dbstart
script to check
whether database is up or not.
