 Hey gang. New job, new problems. I have just been handed a 8.1.7.0.0
 database on solaris 5.8 with a little problem.
 Everything time a client connects, regardless of type, the OS dedicates
 over 200+ Megs of RAM (as shown by Top) to the user process. Naturally,
 this is running the box out of memory. The init.ora has the following
 parameters:
 db_block_size = 8192
db_block_buffers = 9652
large_.pool_size = 200
 sort_area_size=65342
 sort_area_retained_size=65342

 There is nothing from any logs or trace files that helps. Plus, I am new
 to

 UNIX.
 Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Interesting query

Hi David,
Can you have them write the query with a variable then populate the
variable with the function?

 count(*) from a

 select count(*) from a_table where a_column = cdk(1234567890);

 It takes 5 minutes

 By plugging in the result of the cdk function into the query

 select count(*) from a_table where a_column = 0987654321;

 It take .18 of a second.

 How can I tell the optimizer that the result of the function will be the
 same every
 time so you don't need to call it for every row? I can do this in the
 app but it would
 be cool to know if I can do this on the database side also.

 Thanks, Dave

Hi Jacques,
You need to increase the processes parameter in the init.ora file then
restart the listener and database.

 I would think that Solaris Error: 12 corresponds to this error number
 from
 /usr/include/sys/errno.h
 #define ENOMEM  12  /* Not enough core  */

 The Sun server has 4 processors / 4GB of ram.

 ipcs shows that there should be plenty of RAM available (about 680MB
 being
 used). swap -s shows that there is plenty of swap space available (4GB).
 I
 don't have an X-windows emulator on my machine so I don't think I can
 run
 admintool (is that right?)

 A search on Metalink find a forum entry with the following suggestions
 (1
 through 5). I tried 1 (increase processes in init.ora) and 4 (disable
 otrace
 by deleting .dat files). I don't really want to run MTS so I am
 discounting
 option 5 for now. I think the answer lies in 2 (increase Unix kernel
 parameters).

 What can I do? The System Administrator is busy so he gave me the root
 password and said have at it.

 -- From Metalink
 Intermittent TNS-12500 errors are caused by a lack of resources on the
 server. Finding which resource is depleted may be difficult.

 1. The TNS-12500 can be a result of the 'processes' parameter in the
 initsid.ora file being too low.

 2. If the init.ora 'processes' parameter seems ok then you may need to
 increase the Unix kernel parameters for the maximum number of processes
 or
 users (for example, nproc or maxuprc). Check the manuals for the Unix
 operating system for more information on these parameters.

 3. Check that you have adequate swap space.

 4. Disable OTRACE. OTRACE is a tracing feature that can cause many
 problems.
 OTRACE is enabled by default. To disable OTRACE:

 a. Stop the Oracle database.
 b. Go to the $ORACLE_HOME/otrace/admin directory.
 c. Delete all files with a '.dat' extension.
 d. Restart the Oracle database.

 5. Use the Multi-Threaded Server (MTS) option.

 and then if you ever have to re-run catalog.sql your change is gone.
 Not
 something I would do.

 Does anyone know if it is 'safe' to add additional columns
 to user_tab_columns? I am running 8.1.5. I would use the new
 columns to tell the application software which columns on
 any one table are user editable by a dynamically generated
 dialog form.

 Thanks,
 Greg

Re: Off Topic: Unix shell script problem - Urgent advise needed

2001-04-26 Thread Rocky Welch

Hi Viraj,

It looks to me like your clearing the value of $SHLIB_PATH (unset
SHLIB_PATH) then using $SHLIB_PATH to set the value of SHLIB_PATH. Since
it is empty to begin with the value will be null. In a shell script if you
run it from a user's current shell (in your case by executing tst) the
script picks up your current environment (therefore SHLIB_PATH is whatever
initial value is set from the user's .profile). But if you run . tst the
script gets it's environment from the script itself with all variables set
to null until initialized. You must make $SHLIB_PATH equal to some value
within the script before it can be used.

HTH,
Rocky

Are you sure? I read that the data dictionaries are not compatible. I know
to go from standard to enterprise you must take an export, load the
software, create a new instance, then import.

Re: How to break into DBA/Systems work without going broke doing it?

I was a scuba instructor for 13 years then designed a database for classes
using Alpha 4 on an XT. After looking it over with one of my former
students who is an IT director, he hired me the next day. So just learn to

Re: What is best practice - differenet schema/different dbs

2001-03-27 Thread Rocky Welch

Hi Maheswara,
I would think seperate databases would be the way to go, if for no other
reason, you can bring one customer offline without affecting the others.

 We are having an application which is used by different customers

 per 5 minutes. Now, is it better to have a separate database for each
 customer on the same machine or to create all the customers as different
 schema in one single database?

 What are the pros and cons. I am specifically looking at performance

 security issues.

 Environment:

 This application is a 24x7 environment, OLTP application. Sun 6500
 Solaris 7

Re: DBA Job at a Chocolate Factory

I had a short gig setting up a database in Tallahassee State prison. They
had the prisoners entering data for underground utility lines. I had to
train the DBA who was in for 10 years for 3 counts of assault and battery.
That was like being on another, very bad, planet.
If anyone has any intrest in commiting crimes (unless you're a certain

justice) I urge you to tour such a facility. You'll never have an intrest

Thanks, Tim. I checked the message and saw the same as you sent. I'm just
wondering if anyone has seen this before. The front end app is accessing
the data using java. Is it possible that and init.ora parameter is not set

Hi Sanjay,
Issue this command as the table owner:

Check the max extents for the table and use an appropriate value for your

Thanks, Ross.
I issued the command you suggested (the which cc comand) and it found the
compiler just fine. If I relink the oracle executables it works fine.
Any other thoughts?

 If so, which one? where is it located?
 Do a "which cc" and if it doesn't find your
 compiler, you need to either install it, or
 edit the mk file to redirect to an extant compiler.

 Hi Saroj,
If the table data isn't updated too often you can go back to an older export and import the table. If not, are you in archive log mode? Check your alert.log file for errors on the system datafile and let us know the status of your database to provide an accurate answer.

Fewer Reboots
Performing routine maintenance on your system requires significantly fewer reboots, therefore less downtime, with Windows 2000. In addition, with its support for Plug and Play, Windows 2000 automatically recognizes and adapts to hardware changes. This means users can easily add hardware devices such as scanners, DVD players, and speakers without rebooting, and with less potential for user error.
Reboots are also reduced-and reliability increased-through the Microsoft hardware device driver certification program. This program helps ensure that hardware drivers are compatible with Windows 2000, and do not require a reboot after installation. Certified drivers are tested and digitally signed by Microsoft. If Windows 2000 detects a driver that Microsoft has not digitally signed, it warns users about the risk before they install it on their system

Third-party studies that assess reliability from three different perspectives-lab-based testing, customer-site measurement, and user perceptions-conclude that Windows2000Professional is the most reliable desktop operating system.

NSTL collected uptime data in the real-world environment of several customer sites and concluded that the average system uptime between failures of Windows2000Professional is 13 times more than that of Windows98 and three times more than that of WindowsNTWorkstation4.0.
