these are bogus. its just about giving your boss some BS, so he goes
away. Been there, done that.

the only useful stuff to send him would be polling the alert log for
'ORA' errors, checking for chained rows as a percentage of total rows, and
check to see how much free space is in each datafile.

you can also send him statspack stuff, but he wont be able to read
it. might want to send him a max users count and stuff like that. but that
really isnt a 'health' check.

what are you sending him now? hit ratios? Those are garbage. Even
though the damn OCP test says to use them(im still annoyed by that).. its
garbage.

Shibu
I agree with Ryan, that in a technical sense this is bogus. But I
also
feel there is a grain of truth in it. Often at its core the question
has to
do with comfort, and if recent incidents have caused a loss of
comfort, then
you get some sharp questions to answer. My strategy would be to
increase the
level of comfort, but don't commit yourself to wasting a lot of time
once
the sense of comfort returns. Here is what I would consider
legitimate:
   1. Install an alert log scanner that will email you when an error
occurs.
There are several free ones available on-line.
   2. If you've experienced a recent crash, demonstrate you are
taking
serious actions to ensure this problem doesn't recur. Actions like
monitoring.

Here is what I consider bogus:
   1. Constantly monitoring the buffer cache hit ratio.

Marginal - run STATSPACK at regular intervals. I have had situations
where
the database would suddenly "hang" or "freeze" or "slow-down". I
found that
a couple of STATSPACK snapshots could provide a wealth of information
about
what was going on at the time of the incident. Now, my strong
preference is
to be notified so I can manually trigger these snapshots, but if it
makes
someone feel better and get off my case if I have them run at regular
intervals, then I'm okay with that.

Shibu,

I'd go ahead and check your system according to the bug (it may or
may not be present, my memory is a little foggy on the issue). If it is only
1 log, I would look to some other cause (disk), but if you find the
corruption in several logs, it points to something inside the db (not always,
but a good place to start).

Shibu,

What version of Oracle? There is a 7.x bug where mismatches in asynch
i/o read/write corrupted the logs. I don't recall if I encountered it in 8i
as well, but there is something in the back of my mind saying it may still
exist in later releases.

Subject: standby creation

Hi all ,

I have a doubt in creating standby databases . I took one cold
backup
from primary database last week and restored the backup in standby
database
.After taking the cold backup i have added one more tablespace to
primary
database .Now my doubt is to bring my standby database up if i have
to take
one more cold backup or is there any way to add only the new
datafiles to
the standby . I have all the logs generated from last week and also
i
created a new controlfile using the command

'alter datbase create stand by controlfile to '< path > '

My primary and standby datbases are in two remote locations so again
to take
cold backup and bring it to the other location will take time.
That's why i
am finding some way to bring it up using the coldbackup which i have
.

Regards,
Shibu

Thanks for this info about your problem. I will keep it hande for
future reference.

May be I got lucky, because I did not encounter major issues when I
upgraded 9.2.0.3 to 9.2.0.4 on
HP-UX 11i. Just one lib had to be renamed so Oracle could create it
afresh. Other than that, it
was pretty smooth on 3 servers.

Oracle Express and transaction mode

2003-10-13 Thread Shibu MB
Hi all...
I am working on a Datawarehouse, the OLAP engine is ORACLE EXPRESS.
Whenever ORACLE EXPRESS fires a 'select' query to the oracle database, it
sets the transaction in
read only mode.
This is done by first setting the session in READ ONLY mode.
set transaction read only;
and then firing the query...
Select..

Now the problem I am facing is that oracle optimizer goes in for a suboptimal
execution plan, because the
session is set in READ ONLY mode.
So, is there any way to capture 'set transaction read only' statement fired
by an oracle session
and set it to 'set transaction read write'?

Thanx in Advance,
Shibu
