RH Linux 7.2/ Oracle 9i Books

2002-02-19 Thread Speaks, Chuck W.

We are an NT/2000 shop running Oracle Applications 11.5.3 on 8.1.7.2.1. All
the DBA's here have cut their teeth on Oracle on NT/2000. Recently, we have
committed to going with the Oracle 9i RAC configuration on Red Hat Linux
(7.1 I think).

With all this in mind, does anyone have any suggestions on some great
Linux/Red Hat/Oracle on Linux books that could help us out? We're talking
everything from Linux sysadmin to Oracle/Linux DBA. Any suggestions and
personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't do the purchasing here at the

Chuck,
Have you checked the prices for ram lately? a 256 SDRAM is $26 and a 256
RAMBUS is around $108. These prices also depent on the machine manufacture.
A 256 RAMBUS for my Dell is $899. My server is a generic box running Linux
and the 256 RAMBUS chip is $108.
Contact me offline if you need site info for the prices.
ROR mª¿ªm

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/29/01 11:10AM >>>
In Hungary you get it for $25. It's the price of 4-5 McDonald's BigMac menu
:-). It is nothing compared to the time you loose waiting and watching the
hour glass for a simple process to finish it's job.

Append date/time stamp to logfile name (NT 4.0)

2001-08-23 Thread Speaks, Chuck W.

OS: NT 4.0

I have scheduled a query against a database that pipes results to a log
file.

Ex. Select * from any_table; >logfile.txt

Since I need a trend on this query I need to keep the logfile names unique.
Best case scenario is to append a date/time stamp to the logfile name as in
230820011200.txt (daymonthyeartime). Does anyone know how to do this with
NT scripting? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: CA ARCserver Vs. Veritas Backup Exec?

2001-07-02 Thread Speaks, Chuck W.

We were running ArcServ to backup everything in our Network Operations
Center. We had some problems with ArcServ being slow to do things like
restore. As a result we have gone to Veritas and it seems quite a bit
faster and more reliable. This is what I hear from our network guys as they
are VERY pleased with Veritas. Again, I have limited exposure to both, but
the people who used both products on a daily basis around here, favor
Veritas hands down.

Hope this helps

Good morning,

Can anyone share an opinion on how the CA's ARCServer compares to Veritas
Backup Exec on Windows platform?

This will support Windows 2000 and Oracle 8.1.7

Thanks in advance,

You really should download MLK's speech and modify "all the little
background processes and foreground processes, playing together..."

You might start a trend. We could get someone to tweak up the
Lord's Prayer ("Yea, though I walk through a thicket of inverted B-trees,
I am not afraid") and then we could issue little certifications
with gold-rimmed paper for anyone who wanted to prove he/she
had understood the joke.

Such certifications would then be useful during job interviews
when a candidate's sense of humor can be difficult to measure
without whoopee cushions.

One day, in the far, far future, Oracle products will all be using the same
tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files.

They will reside in the default_home, and all the Oracle products will
respect each other and not try to create listener processes that try to
listen on the same ports...
