I couldn't agree more! It also has the Oracle Software Configuration Management (SCM) to rigorously version all those Repository objects. I'm using it as well -- a bit quirky, and I don't particularly like its PL/SQL development interface, but for schema design-to-generation, it's decent. I still prefer ERwin. Modelling tools can be useful if you are involved in design (in which many DBAs are not); they can help getting a grasp of an existing application but how much they bring you depends on you. I have also seen AMC Designer (this is the old name, a tool now sold by Sybase as, I think, PowerDesigner or something like that) much used - and with Oracle more than Sybase. -- Regards, Stephane Faroult Oriole Software -- Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.net -- Author: Stephane Faroult INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fat City Network Services-- 858-538-5051 http://www.fatcity.com San Diego, California-- Mailing list and web hosting services - To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). Re: Data Modelling Tools for a DBAs Job
I'd say having some sort of data modelling tool at your disposal is pretty much essential to understanding the table layouts and relationships for anything but the most trivial model. If you do any sort of data modeling or database design, or if you interface with developers, having a nice ERD is key. Major ERD Tools out there: - S-Designer/PowerDesigner Data Architect - LogicWorks (now Platinum) ERwin - Cast db-builder - Embarcadero's ER/Studio - Microsoft Visio (now has an ERD module) Others that i'm not as familiar with: - DeZign - Silverrun's RDM - Rational Rose 2000E - Oracle Designer 2000 - Popkin's System Architect - Select Enterprise - RevSQL: http://www.sqlworkshop.com/ - Clear Case hope this helps. boss - > > > How essential the following tools to a DBAs job? > (viz) Rational Rose, Clear case for Versioning etc. What are Data > Modelling tools avbl. in the market and which are widely used > (other than Oracle Designer)?. > > > TIA > > > > ___ > No banners. Re: Data Modelling Tools for a DBAs Job
I guess "how important" depends on what type of DBA role you are filling. If it's a "system" type DBA role where your only real task is to keep the database running and perform some basic backup / recovery type work then understanding the intricacies of table relationships isn't very important. If your role includes understanding table relationships, perhaps supporting development of the application sitting on the database, perhaps generating reports from the data, helping users write ad-hoc queries, etc then a good data modelling tool becomes essential... Unless of course there is already a data architect performing this role for you! Where I am currently the tool of choice is Rational Rose. This was chosen largely because the application is OO based and Rational is a very good OO modelling tool. In my opinion though the data modelling side of the product leaves a lot to be desired. A couple of examples: The product cannot define a foreign key on an existing column without using a semi-official plugin. The product cannot reverse engineer UNIQUE indexes from Oracle 8i databases. These are both what I would consider fundamental requirements of a data modelling tool. In defence we are using version 2002 on an NT platform - perhaps things are better in the latest release. The last person to work on our model then brought the data across to Visio to produce a much cleaner diagram but I have no idea if this was a trivial or complex exercise. Previously I had used ERwin and my memories of it are much better although I believe it's not the cheapest data modelling tool in existence. I think even the latest version of TOAD can build data model diagrams. Regards, Mark. If you're using Rational Rose, are you interested in UML modeling? For if so, you might want to check out a tool created by Dulcian, Inc. called BRIM. http://www.dulcian.com It's a free tool, but I do believe that you must contact them for an initial consultation. I am not sure about all of the specifics involved in what your relationship with this company would need to be. It's worth a look, though. One of the tool's designers demo-ed this for me at ODTUG last June and it looks pretty good.
