Yeah,
fond memories of a totally reliable system.

Anyone
heard of a means of making emacs emulate this editor? I believe it has been done.

Wild. You would think a business that makes and sells software would keep
better track of it. Sounds kind of sloppy.

So I guess I got lucky.

On the local level (eg Denmark) they might have a CD or they might not.
There won't be a centralised, systematic archiving effort. Frankly, when I
was in Support, I would sometimes contact a customer that I knew had a
certain (old) version and have them ship a copy or lend it to me, so that I
could help another customer.

I'm not sure there's a central archive at HQ either. I've never heard about
it, which doesn't say much, but I know for a fact about certain versions on
certain platforms that couldn't even be located in Development during their
supported cycle - but that's the odd exception, of course. I'd be very
surprised if Oracle has a registered copy of version 5 in an archive,
although there might still be some sensitive and confidential installations
around with that version running.

I hardly think it is likely for a vendor to say they don't have the code.
If we have people on the list with software dating back to Oracle 4, I
doubt Oracle is purging its archives of the software. It would be
irrational. It is more likely they are just being difficult. Doing nothing
is always the easiest route for the vendor.

Two months ago, I tried to order older non-supported
CDs (7.3, 8.0.5, 8.0.6) and they told me
they could not ship them.
How did you order them?

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from
Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

Keep your CDs forever. I once had a job that
frequently required producing data for our very
efficient legal system. It was not unusual for
requests for information from attorneys to go back ten
years. We had a really good librarian, the media was
always available. Sometimes building an old database
or finding the right compression algorithm was a
challenge.

Re: How long to hold onto old Oracle CDs?

2003-02-24 Thread Mogens Nørgaard
On the local level (eg Denmark) they might have a CD or they might not.
There won't be a centralised, systematic archiving effort. Frankly, when
I was in Support, I would sometimes contact a customer that I knew had a
certain (old) version and have them ship a copy or lend it to me, so
that I could help another customer.

I'm not sure there's a central archive at HQ either. I've never heard
about it, which doesn't say much, but I know for a fact about certain
versions on certain platforms that couldn't even be located in
Development during their supported cycle - but that's the odd exception,
of course. I'd be very surprised if Oracle has a registered copy of
version 5 in an archive, although there might still be some sensitive
and confidential installations around with that version running.

I hardly think it is likely for a vendor to say they don't have the
code. If we have people on the list with software dating back to
Oracle 4, I doubt Oracle is purging its archives of the software. It
would be irrational. It is more likely they are just being difficult.
Doing nothing is always the easiest route for the vendor.

they could not ship them.
How did you order them?

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from
Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

0 was next line. Wasn't 4 Forward and 5 Back? I've CC'ed Michael
Möller, who writes DSI (Data Server Internals) classes in Oracle
Development. He taught me all I ever needed to know about the EDT editor
on VAX/VMS. He really should be able to remember all those wonderful

Hey all,

Can anyone think of a reason to hold on to Oracle 7.3.3 HP/UX
CDs? We've
been at 8.1.7 for 18 months now. I can't think of a good
reason, other than
the software isn't available anymore.

Anybody want some old CDs? :)

I'd say hang on to them as long as you want. I've still got a full set of 5.25
floppies for Oracle 4 at home as well as the docs. Too bad I lost the DOS 6

2003-02-24 Thread Weiss, Rick
Hey Tim:

Which ones do you want?? V5 RDBMS on Macintosh??? I think I still might have
a full set for that one available. I think I lost my Forms 2.0 and the Forms
2.3 addendum in my last move, but I might be
per$uaded to venture to my storeroom to look for them.

At a recent RMOUG event held at a local university, the university bookstore
had a "booth" (i.e. a 4x8 ft table) where they had a "SQL*Forms v3.0
Reference" manual, soft-cover. They were selling it for $85.00! If the
price had been $10-$15, I might have bought it just for laughs...

...I don't know if it sold or not; I had to leave at mid-day...

For manuals as old as yours, you might consider putting them up on eBay
first for a bit, for silly fools like me to bid on...

Two months ago, I tried to order older non-supported

they could not ship them.

How did you order them?

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

How about making them into clocks. I have seen this done. A potential
revenue source is available. Or drink coasters for the fashionable IT
person.

Yeah, these are actually replacements, too. But when I ordered them, the
person (back when you could actually talk to a person on a non-level 1
call)
was surprised that they had any 7.x media in stock. She had said that they
would distribute the CDs only as long as they had stock.

Maybe I'll make an Oracle Mobile using these CDs and all the "Start Here"
CDs that come with every pack. At least I won't be throwing them out...
:)

Thx!

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.
Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

Talking of old Oracle stuff, just been cleaning out the bookshelf. 'UFI',

Under no circumstances would you consider moving your production db back
from 8.1.7 to 7.3.3, would you? So the only possible reason for retaining
them would be to support a newly-acquired application (!?!?!?!). Even if
you still had the CDs, shouldn't you just say you didn't? :-)

They make great tacky drink coasters. If you're into skeet shooting or
plinking, then there's another good use...

Speaking of plinking, former Minnesota Governor (and boa-wearing pro
wrestler) Jesse Ventura had a quote that was relevant: "Gun control? Sure
I believe in gun control. Putting three shots through the same hole --
that's gun control!" If you can put a BB through the drive hole of the CD
without touching from 10 meters out, that's gun control!

We covered an entire wall in the operations manager's office with the
Oracle cd's. We even had enough red ones to create a nice design... It
all started because I asked him if we recycle cd's. He said only if I
could find a new use for them. He shouldn't have said that and then
taken a day off...

Actually the CD's are available. You just have to request them from Oracle.
Of course, this does depend upon having a support contract.

Ordered a replacement CD a couple of months ago for 7.3.4 (HP/UX) due to
cracked media.

Hey all,

Can anyone think of a reason to hold on to Oracle 7.3.3 HP/UX CDs? We've
been at 8.1.7 for 18 months now. I can't think of a good reason, other
than
the software isn't available anymore.

Anybody want some old CDs? :)

Just remember during some versions of 7.x most of dbms_xxx packages weren't encoded, that could be a good reference if you are so interested.
