Hi, I want to patch 8163 on sun box.Can i copy oracle816 installer from one box to another box and use for patching? Hi, Suse7.2 is certified with 9.0.1. It will never be certified with 9.2 and later versions. Suse has a special product SLES - Suse Linux Enterprise Server. It's based on Suse 7.2 and include many official patches and upgrades. Afaik, with Suse 7.2 you may not upgrade your kernel and be certified with Oracle. (7.2 out-of-the-box has 2.4.4) It's not always the problem, but you have a chance to forget about Oracle support when you critically need it. The current politic of Suse regarding Oracle is to support new products from now (or some time in the past) on SLES. So it's certified with 9iR2 (including RAC), iAS 9iR2, Apps 11i. Btw, Suse guys claim that Oracle uses Suse as linux development platform. I know RH has something like Suse's SLES... called RH AS (advanced server), but dunno much about it. We use 7.2 (plus 2.4.16 kernel) for several servers and pretty much happy with it. However, we will move to SLES soon. Any do's and dont's for a 9i oracle installation on RedHat Linux
I am installing RedHat Linux and oracle 9i on two RM servers. I have never run Linux before. I usually run HP L-class or Sun Sparc servers with 8/8i. I would welcome emails with tips anybody has for avoiding anything I don't know that I should be avoiding yet, if you see what I mean! OT: Does anyone know why running startx, after boot-up to a Linux text prompt, causes the shutdown -r to hang the box and not reboot? in case you run into troubles with make consult the RH hompages and refer to the notes for oracle 9 RH server 2.1. These hints/tips work for the distribution of RH 7.0,7.1,7.2,7.3 as well. We have Oracle rdbms 9.2.0 Enterprise edition and OID and IAS on RH 7.2 and RH 7.3. there shouldn't be any problems with the installation. I got 9i release 2 running successfully on a RH7.2 and 7.3 system with no install or runtime problems. I also got release 2 to run without any problems on a Mandrake 8.1 and Mandrake 8.2. You have successfully install the software, but it fails during database creation. Finish your installation without creating a database, and perform the following steps: 1. Run Database wizard to create a database. 2. At the end of the Database Wizard choose the option to have the files created into an empty directory. 3. Make sure that the parameter file is located at the correct directory, or start the instance NOMOUNT with the pfile option. 4. From there onwards you can proceed with the database creation. You can edit the .bat file that is created with the database wizard, and run the commands line by line if the above is not the solution, in order to find where the problem lies. Hi, did you mount the cdrom as read only ? If you have it in your fstab, check for an ro entry in the cdrom line. I personally prefer to build a stage on a disk to install oracle from. In case of patches being published, you can go ahead and apply the patches to the stage (if they are of the kind that can be applied to the stage as in 8.0.5 on SuSE 6.2 i.e.). Bunyamin K. Hello all, Funny you mention Remedy. I've been recently introduced to Remedy here at my new job. I was about to refresh our QA database with production data when I discovered the schema's were different! I took a look at the two schemas and WOW, was that a shock (uglyy). Seems the DEV schema is different from QA schema too. Next week I will meet with one the consultants that implemented the app here. I hope there is some method to the apparent madness (at least mapping between schemas). Hi, Anyone tried install Oracle8i in Solaris with 128 Mbyte of memory ? Yeah I can see that absolutely. I just completed migrating a test database that we are testing for migration from 7.3.4 to 8.1.6. The reason I migrated it was because it had originally been on an UltraSparc 1 that had 192 MB of RAM and the thing would hardly run on that hardware. We ended up having to move it to another machine because of the lack of resources on the original machine. Remember that if you use Oracle Migrate from 7.x to 8.x, instead of export/import, you will get an icky performance hit the first time your data is hit. This is when the block-level changes will take place. So, after your migration is "complete", you will probably want to do FTSs on all tables before opening the DB up to The Masses. The changes will be taken care of for you if you use export/import. Hi, Thanks to those who replied. I was wondering whether which RAID level to implement. My database is not a very critical 24x7 database. It is a development database. There are going to be only a few users accessing this database. Infact the data as such is not very important as it is test data. Any suggestions on which RAID level to implement? TIA Sanjay
