RE: Oracle wants your job

2002-05-01 Thread Hately Mike

Danisment,

10 Centralisation will occur.
20 Distribution will occur
30 go to 10

Anyone who's been in IT for more than about 6 years will have gone through
the cycle at least once. It's got more to do with management making a name
for themselves than any rational argument.
Money's the ONLY thing I store centrally. Because I get interest. Otherwise
I'd keep it myself.
When Oracle start paying me to house my data they'll have a chance.

Mike

Hello List,

Maybe, some of you will not be agree with me, But, I think centralization
will
occur.

Let's imagine that There is no banking system in the world and everyone
keeps their
money at home. And, someone claims that there will be banks and people will
give
money to banks. In this case, we would say 'Why'. We would say Why do I
give my
money to a bank ?.

This is same thing for IT sector. Some of us say Why do I give my data ?.
I'm
saying if we give our money to a bank, why don't we give our data to data
centers ?

Which one is important for commercial companies, money or data ? Money is
centralized, why not data ?

Also, Centralized information makes societies more democratic, more clearer.

Hmmm...if Oracle hosts my database, and something bad happens, and it goes
down for the day.

Is Oracle going to pay me for the downtime? I think not.
Is Oracle going to reimburse me for all the sales I lost? I think not.
I'm sure some Oracle rep will make me all kinds of promises that they will
fix their process so it will never happen again. Not.

If the data is in house then someone can be held accountable. Procedures
can be updated.

As for your money example, if I didn't need a checking account (for checks),
a credit card, a mortage, a car loan, then I wouldn't need a bank, and all
my money would be stuffed under my...so if banks all of sudden appeared,
then yes, I would put my money into a bank, because I need all those
services that the bank provides.

Besides, technology is already kicking in that some stores (in Seattle) are
accepting your fingerprint as your form of payment. You setup an account
with the store and tie your fingerprint to a credit card.

Chris,

Our company as well as many others do host databases for our customers and
yes we have SLA's which specify financial costs associated with not meeting
them. Oracle is not doing anything new in this sense.

Me thinks this is related to all the other hot topics out there...

Centralize the computers, then another CIO comes in, decentralize all the
computers...every division gets there own...a genius.

IT is outsourced, problems, slow response, a new CIO comes in, let's bring
everything in house under our control...a genius.

One big computer that runs everything, now the apps are being spread out
among a bunch of computers...

Meanwhile, all the peons get kicked around, while dgmt gets bonuses and
perks...for being a genius.

History repeats itself...

Re[4]: Oracle wants your job

2002-04-30 Thread Robert Eskridge

Curiously, as an ASP we've been contracted by some organizations for
just that reason. Someone in upper management decides that their
ability to enhance shareholder value is hindered by their current
business rules. So they mandate using our application with little or
no customization, driving their organization to shoehorn their
business into rules that we support.

It works well for that manager because we get positioned as the bad
guys while he gets to reorganize his business without even attending
the meetings where all the heated discussions take place.

What a way to make a living

Re: Oracle wants your job

Hello List,

Maybe, some of you will not be agree with me, But, I think centralization will
occur.

Let's imagine that There is no banking system in the world and everyone keeps their
money at home. And, someone claims that there will be banks and people will give
money to banks. In this case, we would say 'Why'. We would say Why do I give my
money to a bank ?.

This is same thing for IT sector. Some of us say Why do I give my data ?. I'm
saying if we give our money to a bank, why don't we give our data to data centers ?

Which one is important for commercial companies, money or data ? Money is
centralized, why not data ?

Also, Centralized information makes societies more democratic, more clearer.

 Jared,

The other problem with outsourcing, which we've run head on into, is that an
ASP wants you to run the application plain vanilla. Customization of an
application to fit your business/needs is one area they really do not like to
handle. Makes upgrading a pain in the *^, which means some of your clients are
running PeopleSoft 7 while the remainder are on Peoplesoft 8. Also your patch
levels will vary, due to the customization. Hence, if you need to customize you
 can't outsource.

 RANT
This has all been tried before, and the predictions are the
same: financial nirvana, big savings in technology costs,
no pesky holier-than-thou DBA's baffling poor damagers
with stuff they can't possibly understand.
 /RANT

Very few executive, managers or DBA's are going to want
to place their corporate data on Oracle's site, or even provide
access to it from outside for non-employees.

There's also the whipping boy factor. Who's butt you going to
kick when the database is screwed up? ;)

Heard a good quote on a documentary the other night:
A corporation has no soul to save nor an ass to kick.

Someone local must be accountable for the data. The whole
outsourcing thing is kind of baffling to me at times. Why not
carry it out its fullest measure?

Outsource mfg, sales, IT, design and executives. No need
 for any employees.

Guess I turned of the rant too soon.

You are correct about one thing - some of us will not agree with you especially about centralized information and democracy.
