Gogala, Mladen, 8/10: Rachel, William is referring to an old miracle of advertising prowess which was unleashed onto US by the Swedish company Electrolux which sells vacuum cleaners, among other things . To make the long story short, Swedes wanted to save the money needed for the translator, so they entrusted the job of finding a catch phrase for selling their precious vacuum cleaners on the US market to a guy whose experience with the English language consisted mainly of watching two episodes of I love Lucy on TV. He came up with the phrase Nothing sucks like Electrolux, which for some reason beyond comprehension failed to boost sales but it certainly did make it to the marketing history books. I wonder if the miraculous marketeer was promoted after making the marketing history? Gogala, Mladen, 8/3: AFAIK, the phrase the whole 9 yards precedes WWII and comes from WWI. Allegedly, it was the size of the ammo belt for the maxim machine gun. The whole 9 yards meant to fire it all. OT RE: Burning game CD's
Tom. A number of things, at least in my experience, can cause the problems you are having. The media(the blank CD's) depending on what you are recording certain types of CD's are better than others and the play back device may not be able to properly read the CD recording. I have recorded music CD's that play fine on my CD player at work but do not work in my car CD player. Check the manual or online help that came with your system for more information specific to your hardware. I do not use my burner for games so I do not have any experience in that regard. My guess is that you burned the cd correctly, so to speak, just some of these or similar factors came into play. Have fun with your cd burner, I love mine even with these limitaions. So far I have been able to get around most of them to suit my needs. -Original Message- Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 10:55 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Off Topic: I bought a PC this weekend that had my first every CDROM burner. RE: Burning game CD's
Use a disk copier ... i.e. copy CD to CD complete (Adaptec CD Copier) not individual files. Right now there are no (known) copy protected game CDs, only few music CDs. The music CDs are supposed to include 'hiss' and 'clicks' and 'pops' when you copy them. Someone will soon break that as well. If you don't have another CDROM or DVD drive, you might have to create a disk image of the CD you want to copy and then create the CD. Make sure you use correct format, i.e. data CD for games etc. I haven't seen a copy protection scheme that has worked flawlessly other than a threat of prosecution through a license agreement. This is also getting to a stage where it is frightening ... last week Salon had an article where a couple had their cable modem access cut by Ti**War** company after MPAA found that someone had loaded a copyrighted movie for download using their IP address (spoofing). All this time the couple was on vacation and it took them lot of phone calls to get their access back. Raj __ Rajendra Jamadagni MIS, ESPN Inc. RE: Burning game CD's
Almost EVERY new game CD-ROM is now copy-protected, most of them utilize SafeDisc. You can find sites out there that will tell you how to make backup copies of your discs. Check out http://www.gamecopyworld.com. You must use I/E for this site to work correctly. There are no known copy-protected music CDs in the U.S. Europe has about 100,000 of them out in circulation unbeknownst to most consumers. For music CDs use ParanoidCD on Linux. --Michael -Original Message- Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 11:26 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Use a disk copier ... i.e. copy CD to CD complete (Adaptec CD Copier) not individual files. RE: Burning game CD's
Sorry, I was just observing our fine country's fair use laws. If I pay for a CD then I should be allowed to back it up just in case the disc becomes unusable. Please don't use the information I've provided if you intend to pirate CDs. After all Thomas Jefferson would be very happy to know that we are reverting back to his original concept of copyright law which only entitled exclusive ownership of your works for a limited time - - after that it went into the public domain! --Michael -Original Message- Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 11:00 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Please, let's not distribute copyright infringement schemes via this list. Opinions on fairness of the law, etc., are really not important here either. I couldn't wait to use it. I burned several game CD's (Age of Empires, Return Fire II, Roller coaster Tycoon) and none of them worked. The games just hung when I ran them. Bummer.
