Re: Changing Character Set from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8

2003-12-15 Thread Tanel Poder
You can't change to UTF8 from WE8ISO8859P1, since the latter is not a subset
of UTF8.
If you were on US7ASCII, the story would be different.

You have to go with export/import.

I have upgraded the database from 8.0.5/8.1.7 to 9.2.0.4 and changed
character set using alter database character set.
It will work without any problem. Go for it.

I am in the process of planning our upgrade for our 8.1.5 database to

 9.2.0.4.
As part of this upgrade I am changing the character set from

RE: Changing Character Set from WE8ISO8859P1 to UTF8

2003-12-15 Thread Nelson, Allan
Oracle has an internal utility to do this in place named csconv. You
have to get this from Oracle consulting. In any event, there is a
utility named csscan in your oracle home. Run it against your database
and it will tell what data if any needs to be changed. Look for UTF8
conversion docs on metalink. They have what you need there. A direct
conversion using the alter database commnad will corrupt data if not
everyting in your database is convertible. You must do this to do the
export import cycle or cssconv.

RE: Changing character set

2003-11-19 Thread Vergara, Michael (TEM)
There's a whole spread of stuff on MetalLink about changing
character sets. There is even a utility program called 'csscan'
that scans the DB to find potential trouble spots.

In short, though, if this DB only has 7-bit ASCII characters in
in, then a switch to UTF-8 will have no immediate effect.

Cheers,
Mike

Anyone change character sets recently?

I've got a cust that wants to take a small database from US7ASCII to UTF8 I believe it
was.

It sounds like they have all the steps down pat and are pretty much ready to go, but
are there any gotchas they may have missed?

Will this affect the RMAN backups they get nightly?

I've told them to do a cold file backup first, then try on test, and if all is cool
they can proceed...

20 years working with Oracle and this is a first time for me.

Web interface on this note, so I hope it comes out okay...

RE: CHANGING CHARACTER SET

Gerardo,

The trick works for me also but when i try to export it shows as:

Connected to: Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
Export done in US7ASCII character set and US7ASCII NCHAR character set
server uses UTF8 character set (possible charset conversion)

Do we are able to change character set or our existing data is still using
US7ASCII.

Thanks

RE: CHANGING CHARACTER SET

2001-11-01 Thread Molina, Gerardo

NLS_LANG should be set on client, either UNIX environment variable or NT
registry entry.

I don't think there's a way to force client to use a particular character
set. This is the whole point of NLS, I think. Server should not care what
language/character set client uses, and vice versa.

Gerardo,

Thanks for your help. I need little more clarification:
When we change the database character set from US7ASCII TO UTF8
Do this will only affects for the server database and client can
still export in different character set as per setting of NLS_LANG
on their machine..
If i want to force clients to use NLS_LANG of server database how can
i set some parameters on server .
NLS_LANG is set as environment varable but if i want to add entry in
init.ora we have parameter NLS_LANGUAGE and NLS_TERRITORY...but how can
we specify the chacter set in init.ora file
I know i am asking some silly questions but i am totally confused with
oracle docs.
