You will want to open a TAR on this. There is a lengthly procedure document that Oracle will provide for doing an Apps Clone on 11i. There are issues with just duplicating the executables and database. I got out of Apps on 10.7, but remember that a doc was being written by Oracle as of the 2001 Open World for 11i. Be careful who you get when you open the tar... there is one chick in Denver who INSISTS on repeatedly reading you the whitepaper over the phone, and INSISTS that bad things CAN'T happen in a clone (they can... I have had two failed clones... one I believed them and manually fixed every file and it took a month to get it repaired... the other I did not believe them, restored and fixed it in two days). There is a white paper on Metalink that will walk you through it.. but make sure you have a good backup before you start. It is very straight forward and very step by step, but it can still fail. You do not have to do a fresh install before each clone, don't let anyone tell you different. You have to do ONE install on the target system. The procedure for 11i is (from what I understand) much easier than for 10.7. Hi all, Looks like we have a fair bunch of Oracle Apps DBAs on this list! The issues of cloning for 10.7 (various flavors), 11 and 11i are quiet different from each other. This is mostly because the underlying technical architecture has changed between each of these versions. Have a look at the following link for a collection of the most comprehensive papers on this subject. http://www.dbatoolbox.com/Content/cloning_wp.htm 11i cloning can be done 'officially' using the adclone utility, but this is cumbersome. Unofficially, there are a variety of methods that are addressed in these links. Jared, I *think* this is 10.7 character. It would be if your users use a VT terminal emulator to access the application. Be aware though that a combination of Character/Smart client could exist... In this case, it does not matter though as the work that you would do will be the same. I don't believe it is NCA ( isn't that the Java Workstation version? You know, the one at Open World that never worked? ;) If you used any form-type interface within a Browser, then it would be NCA. There are some web based elements though, such as Self Server Web Apps. The difference is that NCA works like a form (Enter/Execute Query for e.g.) while the SSWA is a pure Web-type interface. How would I identify Smart Client? The Smart Client set consists of the Application (Forms) working off either a 'Client' PC. In most cases, this is via a shared service such as Citrix - on a Windows box in any case. In other words a very thick (smart!?!?!) client. Scott S - In many cases, the Apps SysAdmin performs the work on the 'applmgr' and related APPS/APPLSYS accounts after the Db/Appltop copy and the DBA is not involved. My apps person tells me that they just restore the db and the applmgr stuff works fine with 10.7. Its sloppier than restoring the appl_top as well, but works. 11/11i being an entirely different animal. Jared, In addition to the usual SAP system that runs most of our company, we have Oracle Apps 10.7 HR. For some reason the HR folks didn't like the SAP HR module, so I have SAP and Oracle Apps. The problem is a request I have to refresh the Dev database from the Production database. I haven't read any official documentation for 10.7 'cloning' (as the Apps-aware call it). However, it is pretty simple compared to 11.0 and 11i if this is NOT 10.7 NCA. In addition, this also changes if you are using 10.7 Character, 10.7 SC (Smart Client) or 10.7 NCA, so do let us know. In simple terms, you will have to do the following (assuming you have a copy - hot or cold - of the DB): On the Application/Database server side: 1. Copy over the APPL_TOP/Custom top (basically all owned by 'applmgr') and Database files to the respective locations. Adjust the environment variables for log/TOP locations including APPLCSF (conc. program output logs) and any Custom tops. I assume you already have ORACLE_HOME copied over and setup (with envs, etc.) - this does not change frequently. 2. Change the listener ports for the database, FNDFS listener and OEORPC listener if required. 3. Startup the Database and listeners - recover to a point in time if from a hot backup. Do NOT startup the Concurrent Managers yet. Delete _ANY_ DBlinks that point to other production systems - this may cause some Invalid objects, and you may have to ignore/fix them as the case may be. 4. Change the global name (alter database rename global_name ..) 5. Reset all Alerts from 'Enabled' to 'Disabled'. This can be achieved either from the Alerts form or using the following SQL (unless you want to do this off the Alerts screen!): update applsys. alr_alerts set enabled_flag = 'N' where enabled_flag = 'Y'; This will disable all alerts and avoid erroneous messages to Users/Functional folks. 6. Update all pending jobs to reset copies to print. This is to avoid double-printing when you (or someone else) turn on some of the Concurrent jobs back on - at least you can avoid confusion from double-printing of reports. This can be done using the following SQL: UPDATE APPS.FND_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS SET NUMBER_OF_COPIES = 0; 7. Startup your forms interface (not the Concurrent Manager) and go to the Profiles screen (or the Profile-System form). Modify profile options: Query OE: Transaction Manager - change to the OEORPC listener name Query Site Name - change to the right name (this changes the Help-About information in forms) 8. Change the APPS/APPLSYS and other schema passwords. Open a SQL*Plus using 'SYSTEM' or a DBA account in a separate window. Open the 'Security-ORACLE-Register' (Oracle Users) screen. Enter the Password twice for each of APPLSYS, APPS and schemas and Commit, making sure that you change the corresponding Oracle user (APPLSYS/APPS/Schema) as you change them. It is critical to commit this, and make sure that this does not break inbetween - as the APPLSYS/APPS password combination needs to be correct and match in both the internal FND tables as well as the SYS.USER$ tables... You may also have to reset the SYSADMIN passwords. 9. I would also cancel all pending concurrent jobs before starting up the Concurrent Manager, but that is something that you will need to agree with the functional folks. If this is Ok, you can use the following SQL: update apps.fnd_concurrent_requests set phase_code = 'C', status_code = 'D' where phase_code = 'P'; 10. Startup the Concurrent Managers (using 'applmgr' account!) and watch the logs in $APPLCSF/logDB/*.mgr for any problems/issues. 11. You may also choose to resize the Queue sizes on the Dev instance. This reduces the number of processes that start up from the CM. This can be done from the 'Concurrent Managers' screen (Concurrent-Manager-Define) - click on the 'Work Shifts' button and change the value in 'Processes'. The Internal Manager will reduce this number at the next cycle. Depending on your customizations and environment, you may have to perform some additional steps. I have not included the steps for the Client side : I will have to know what you use and can suggest what needs to be done. This is off some of our internal documentation - I have given you the essentials that should make sense in a general Apps installation. I would also cancel all pending concurrent jobs before starting up the Concurrent Manager, but that is something that you will need to agree with the functional folks. If this is Ok, you can use the following SQL: update apps.fnd_concurrent_requests set phase_code = 'C', status_code = 'D' where phase_code = 'P'; 10. Startup the Concurrent Managers (using 'applmgr' account!) and watch the logs in $APPLCSF/logDB/*.mgr for any problems/issues. 11. You may also choose to resize the Queue sizes on the Dev instance. This reduces the number of processes that start up from the CM. This can be done from the 'Concurrent Managers' screen (Concurrent-Manager-Define) - click on the 'Work Shifts' button and change the value in 'Processes'. The Internal Manager will reduce this number at the next cycle. Depending on your customizations and environment, you may have to perform some additional steps. I have not included the steps for the Client side : I will have to know what you use and can suggest what needs to be done. This is off some of our internal documentation - I have given you the essentials that should make sense in a general Apps installation. Dear Patrice, The megapatches are worth installing, since they fix lots of bugs. There is a pulldown list in the patch getter screen that lets you ask for all megapatches or similar. Also check the release notes to see if there are any interoperability patches. (Interops let this version of Apps work with that version of Server, etc. all down the technology stack UGGG!) Have you dicided which products to install? That will tighten up the list! Patrice, Welcome to the wonderful and exciting world of Apps patches! Are some more critical than others? Yes, but it largely depends on the extent you're using the system. Generally, I don't bother with minor patches unless a specific bug is stumbled upon. If you roll with the mega patches, you're pretty much covered. Btw, the separate application modules (AR, GL, etc) don't have to be at the same patch level - this makes for even more fun. I'm speaking from Apps 11.0 experience, so YMMV. Title: RE: Oracle Applications patches I presume that is 500 per module and there must be about 30 modules by now, with perhaps an average of 7 or 8 modules on each installation The normal method is to install a full patchset which is a collection of a number of patches (i.e GL Patchset J etc). At sites where I have worked adding a patch is usually the last resort and it has to be a significant problem before the patch is applied. A new patchset install normally involves a lot of testing if there has been any form of customisation of the application. FYI, The Oracle Store only ships to the U.S. (NAFTA doesn't apply I guess.). So I called the number provided on the link for Canada... was told this was the wrong 1-800 number, they gave me another one with an extension. I called this number, and was told this was the wrong extension, they transferred me to someone else. The applications rep for Canada didn't know what to do, this is the first time apparently that someone wants to purchase the Oracle Applications CD pack in this country. ??? They will call me back once they figure out what they are supposed to do.
