I picked my copy up last night from my local Borders bookstore. They even had a copy for the shelf. I'm assuming everyone else has theirs by now and are busily reading. Please post any comments or observations. Leave it to Cary to put exercises at the end of each chapter. A quick flip through makes me want to abandon study for my last OCP exam. Here's why: Figure 9-14 shows an interesting situation in which a single fast CPU out-performs a system with 4 slower CPUs, for a certain condition; this is exactly the situation I am facing while testing themove of aDB (9.0.1.3.0) from a 2-processor (600 MHz) to a 4-processor (400 MHz) box and have been puzzling over reduced performance, even after playing with different degrees of parallel query and having twice as much memory for the DB on the 4-processor box I'm only into the book 100 pages and it's by far the most thorough treatment of SQL trace data I've ever seen- very deep stuff with thorough explanations and tables you can use the methods are logical and founded in the scientific method, something I have seen little of since I left a Ph.D. program in chemistry to work with databases 3 years ago- I can't wait to hit the queuing theory section the writing style is clear and confident I'm just a novice, but I can see that this book will change the way Oracle is tuned. I whole-heartedly believe that this book will help me solve my current performance issues, and many more to come. On another book note, have you seen the latest Oracle Magazine advertisement for books from Oracle Press? There is one entitled, "Oracle Wait Interface" from Gaja V., Kirti D., and R. I'm not sure what's up with Amazon. It was released last week, and it's showing up at people's houses now when purchased from other sources. Consider canceling your Amazon pre-order and buying it direct from oreilly.com. ...I'm pretty sure it's going to be several months before O'Reilly sells all the copies they printed. I pre-ordered long ago and still have no valid delivery date. When I check the status of my order it just states, We are preparing these items for shipment and this portion of your order cannot be canceled or changed. The where's my stuff page has been saying that for the last 2-3 weeks after stating that the original estimated delivery date was between Sept 5 and Sept 9. So I don't know when my order will be shipped but I can't cancel it to do business with an outfit that can give me good service. Doesn't Amazon use Oracle?
