RE: backspace in Oracle.

2001-05-31 Thread Mohan, Ross

No doubt Novell at the time was more stable than
NT at the time.

But some of these stories, which can start off as My
Novell box seems more stable than that NT 3.51 SP 1 box
mutate into internet apocrypha faster than you can spell telephone.

Before you know it, it's a heartlung machine, coded in assembler,
running on a Novell beta release cross compiled to the Kaypro,
which has been up, even through tornadoes, for 22 years. Meanwhile,
the NT box crashed on boot up, then corrupted the disk, sold the
house, and slept with my wife.

I always ask for details. Two reasons. The first is to take a
litmus test for veracity. The other is (assuming veracity) to
learn something about how to make systems stable. shrug

There isn't any known bug under NT. But there are many memory leaks and
poor drivers, that tend to lead to early rebooting. In my experience.

I think the worst problem with NT is not the os but the drivers, even though

Yeah, funny isn't it?

I had my Sparc Station 5 up for just a few days short of a year once.

During that time I added/delete/built many different pieces of open
source software and ran 2 oracle databases.

It crashed due to a Solaris bug that hits sometime after 248 days of
uptime. Who knows, maybe there's a bug like that on NT, but how
will anyone ever find out?

Just joking. I have used Novell in the past ver 2.something and it served the purpose

to 5.1 this year before we install a financial package that won't run on Novell with

Yea, me neither, but it's a good story, just

RE: backspace in Oracle.

2001-05-30 Thread Christopher Spence

I personally vouch for the machine running Novell for 6 years, I built it.
It was taken down about 3 months ago. It happened to be a server use to
store drivers and os builds to zap down to machines as they are being built
at PC manufacture.

Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if
both are frozen.

Apparently this quirky behaviour comes from running one and one only
application on a system. I have heard rumours of this occurring on other
sites when the use a server for a single task. So any rumours you have heard
about its capability as a multitasking OS and being able to pass the 30 day
test now they would be interesting. Hell one of our Domain controller can't

Jared,

After searching on Oracle's website it does not mention the 248 bug as
existing on NT.

I searched for information on it because I will be there in around a week

(See my other thread for a slowdown that occurred on the weekend
- possibly related to Oracle instance uptime of 100 days.)

Peter is right - this server only runs Oracle (in addition to server
management software).
Though it also serves out forms and the Oracle runtime.

RE: backspace in Oracle.

2001-05-27 Thread A. Bardeen

Bruce,

It's a generic bug (bug 1084273, note 118228.1) that
appears to affect only Unix operating systems, most
notably Solaris. I suspect that the NT architecture
is different enough that it's not affected by this
bug.

Hopefully you'll have this figured out before another
100 days goes by, but I'd start gathering some
bstat/estat or statspack reports now to use as a
baseline for comparison.

This is done by pressing , then pressing backspace.

 e.g. stty erase CTRL-V backspace.

All should be fine now, both at the command line and in SQL*Plus.
