RE: Service startup on Windows 2000 fails

I cannot trust my network admins. They do crap without any notification. They will
make a change and then I will spend the next day trying to figure out what happened.
Their typical response is Oh, we didn't know that the databases would be affected.
DO NOT TRUST NETWORK ADMINS. And from my time working in IS I have found that network
admins have no communication skills. These are NT guys. I had better luck with unix
network admins though. Go figure.

Lyndon, I wish I knew what caused the problem. And I have no idea how the monkey that
broke it solved the problem. I think it had something to do with removing folder
shares, but I'm not sure.

I am so busy whipping out volumes of pl/sql code that I can't stop to understand why.
I have to figure out how to smooth over the fact that we lost one day in our already
tight schedule that is making it necessary for me to work from home at night (DSL +
VPN = FUN! Sometimes.)

Cut, Paste, Test, Kill. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Wish I could just leave work and get pissed out of my tree.

Lisa,

I'm using Windows 2000 with Oracle DataBase 9i.
And I had a similar problem with you afer install the database.
The Listener service does not show in the list of Windows services.

Try stop the listener and restart it.
Use the application LSNRCTL at Commaand Prompt
Type STOP and them START.

Lisa,

Just
re-read your note and realized that you are not able tostart
anyOracle service.

Is the
server a Pentium IV (just a thought)? Is this a new install? Or did it
juststart happening?Does a re-boot of the server make any
difference?

Could
well be a permissions/access issue. Trying to runLSNRCTL from the
command line may still giveyou some more meaningful
clues..

  Lisa,

  To
start with - try to run the LSNRCTL command from a 'command line' prompt (you
get the command line prompt bytyping 'CMD' from the 'START'---
then --- 'RUN' box) on the server where the Listenerought
  tobe running.

  Once
you get the LSNRCTL prompt you can type the 'START' command, which will
try to start the Listener. This will, hopefully, give you more
meaningful messages so that you then try to resolve the issue. Note down
and follow-up on any TNS-X errors, etc.

  You
can also issue the 'STATUS' command to show the current status of the Listener
or the 'HELP' command to list the various commands you can
  issue.

  Once
you are done you can exit by issuing the 'Exit' (or Quit)

Here's what I've tried:

I am able to log in as each of these local

double-checked the password in the properties tab.
Local system account also fails with same

Here's the error I receive when I try to manually

Have you tried oradim from the command line to start the DB service?

Lisa,

Pick your favorite sid on that server ex. lisa

delete the password file associated with sid lisa. It will be in your
oracle_home\database directory.

At the command prompt delete that instance. This will not delete the
database

oradim -delete -sid lisa

Recreate service using
oradim -new -sid lisa -intpwd newpwd -maxusers 30 -startmode auto -pfile
fullpath\initlisa.ora

Alway review the oradim.log in your oracle_home\database directory after
running each oradim

Try connecting to database

RE: Service startup on Windows 2000 fails

2003-02-19 Thread Grant Allen
Lisa,

I'd suggest checking the application log in Windows event viewer - usually
contains something even if the on-screen response suggests no error
returned. You should see things like

Audit trail: ACTION : 'SHUTDOWN' DATABASE USER: '/' PRIVILEGE : SYSDBA
CLIENT USER: SYSTEM CLIENT TERMINAL: STUPIDMACHINE STATUS: 0 .

and a bunch of PGA instantiation events for SMON, PMON, etc (e.g.
Initializing PGA for process RECO in instance stupid1)

Given your services are failing, you should see a bunch of errors (whether
they're useful is another story ...)

If that fails to shed any light, also try the listener log / alert log, and
see if there are any tell tale errors there.

Ciao
Fuzzy

(and yes, my windoze box is called STUPIDMACHINE ... that way it knows when
I'm talking to it :-) )

Check to make sure Oracle is not using NT PDC authentication. Maybe
you do not have a PDC in the network and Oracle would not start

Sorry, I misread your message, I had theimpression the db would
notstart... not that the listener would not
start.

Is it possible you/someone installed oracle that was
not an administrator, at the time of install. Sounds like a permissions
problem.

possible solution to uninstall/ clean the registry
(remove all referenced to oracle in the registry with the exceptions of legacy
apps) and reinstall as administrator

have you tried running other services ? like
lsnrctl?

Im running Windows 2000 sp3, ver

Hi
Wayne,

Thanks
so much for responding.

I
guess my lack of knowledge of Windows 2000 administration has just bit me in the
ass. A description of a paintbrush-style change applied to our servers by
the network support people in another office is what completely and totally
HOSED services on two development boxes. Of course, a communication went
out to a list of people that *didn't* include me or my boss, or the people who
actually support my servers here in Ft. Lauderdale.

GR I screamed at the guy ( what? me?NO!
) and it will not happen again.

The
really sad part is that I wouldn't know what permissions need to be where and
why. Add that to the very long list of things to investigate between

Anyway
everything is back and I am happy again.

I hope

Hi
Lisa

A
question

Did you recently make any changes to that machine?
, ie upgrade or install anything? it's possible another application
may have caused this sudden problem.

Also have you tried rebooting the server and then
trying to start the services? I would trya
reboot first before looking at other things.
Could you try that and then tell us how it
goes?

  Good morning everyone,
  Windows 2000 sp3, ver 8.1.7.2
I have NO IDEA what is going on here. I
can't start any of the services associated with Oracle, not with my logon,
not with local admin, not with a local account with appropriate
  permissions, nothing.
  Here's what I've tried:

Followed note on metalink stating to add
local security policies: Act as part of operating system, increase
quotas, log on as batch job, replace a process level token, and
rebooted.
All logons are part of the administrator and
the ORA_DBA group.
I am able to log in as each of these local
accounts, the accounts are not locked or messed up. I have
double-checked the password in the properties tab.
Local system account also fails with same
error.
Here's the error I receive when I try to
  manually start the listener service:
  "Could not start the OracleOraHome81TNSListener
service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error
This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service
error. If the problem persists, contact your system
  administrator."
I am clueless and so is the sysadmin. I
am just thankful this is a test system instead of production... I know
  next to nothing about windows.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

RE: Service startup on Windows 2000 fails

2003-02-19 Thread Koivu, Lisa
Lyndon, I wish I knew what caused the problem. And I have no idea how the monkey that
broke it solved the problem. I think it had something to do with removing folder
shares, but I'm not sure.

I am so busy whipping out volumes of pl/sql code that I can't stop to understand why.
I have to figure out how to smooth over the fact that we lost one day in our already
tight schedule that is making it necessary for me to work from home at night (DSL +
VPN = FUN! Sometimes.)

Cut, Paste, Test, Kill. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Wish I could just leave work and get pissed out of my tree.

Mrs. Monkey.

2003-02-19 Thread Henry Poras
Thanks, I might have to go there. We had a Win2K box today with SYSTEM using
100% of the CPU. I tracked the problem to a single system thread (using
Performance monitor ProgramsAdministrative ToolsPerformance), but I have
no idea how to tell what that thread is doing. Maybe I'll give sysinternals
a try. (our sysadm wants to reapply an already applied service pack and
reboot. Don't know if I'll get to more digging before that, but I'm sure the
problem will resurface again later:)

Good morning, too,

I wonder if you can't start your listener service, as far as I know listener
service is automaticaly run when Windows 2000 starts. I just can give you an
advice to talk with your System Administrator and ask for him to check what
is going on.

HTH,
