Maybe not offend but it could bring back bad memories for some about

And since my topic at the Hotsos Symposium is /The DBA is Dead, the
Database is Dying... But Our Future Looks Bright/ //there just MIGHT be
a need for me to use a few, chosen, Danish bad words. I shall try, of
course, to keep it in Danish. Shouldn't offend too many.

Can I suggest, Gary, that we also do a Profanity Class 101 for the
speakers during the event? I could teach some of it.

Re: book

2003-09-01 Thread Arup Nanda
What exactly do you want to see in the book on internals and kernel?

As some others have mentioned already, Steve Adam's book is excellent for
undertanding the internal workings; but it may not be appropriate for a
beginner. If you want the knowledge as a beginner, do check out Tom Kyte's
book - Expert One-to-One; it has a clear explnation of the Oracle processes
and file interaction. This book is for 8i, too; but will help you in
understanding 9i stuff as well.

If you are lookin fro internal latches, locks, waits information, then Steve
Adam's book is unparalled. You have to supplement your learning with
tid-bits of informaion from other sources such as MetaLink, articles, OTN,
and more.

HTH.

We will be bringing in Oracle 9iAS

  1)
  Understand HTTP
  2)
  Understand

  3)
  Understand 9iAS

I have found useful information on

THEN you should buy:

AND THEN, you get that device, from the old Star Trek series, that you put

Re: book for ocp 8i performance tuning

2003-06-06 Thread Mogens Nørgaard

You will have to look for a book that tells you the wrong things about tuning,
because the exam is wrong. If there's any book out there that states it can
help you pass the OCP tuning exam, it's probably true, and you should just
buy the cheapest one. Then go and pass the stupid and useless exam. Then
throw away the book.

THEN you should buy:

Tom Kyte's first book (one-on-one).
Jonathan's only book
James Morle's only book
Gaja's only book.
... and of course Cary's coming book.

But please don't spend more than the bare minimum of money on any book that
either says it can tell you how to pass the ocp tuning exam, or for whatever
wrong reasons actually advocates the same nonsense about hit ratios and stuff.

Hi All,

A developer I work with has asked if there are any books which cover both
advanced SQL and SQL tuning in the one title. Does anyone know of such a
book?

Essentially we have several developers here who know the basics of SQL but
want to understand how to write more advanced queries (I guess interesting
use of subqueries, decode functions, and some of the lesser used syntaxes
like intersect and minus). They also want to learn some basic performance
tuning concepts - I guess learning about implicit conversion, the use of
hints, and what indexes can and can't be used to achieve might be a good
start.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. The database can be assumed to be
Oracle (currently 8, perhaps 9 in the next year) since most tuning is
vendor specific.

Thanks,
 Mark.

RE: Book Suggestion

2002-10-22 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS
Veronica - Fortunately there are beginning to be a few to choose from. A new
book that will hit the shelves soon is:

Oracle9i RMAN Backup Recovery by Robert Freeman (who participates on this
list) and Matthew Hart. I believe there is a sample chapter posted
somewhere, but I can't recall which site.
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=6WIANMIL0
Hisbn=0072226625

For a simple resource to get you started, try Oracle Backup and Recovery 101
by Kenny Smith and Stephan Haisley. About half of this is devoted to RMAN.
They have some simple step-by-step tutorials that have you create a small
database and then perform each of the major backup actions, corrupt your
database, then recover it.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=6WIANMIL0
Hisbn=0072194618

A good, inexpensive guide to keep at your elbow is Oracle RMAN Pocket
Reference by Darl Kuhn and Scott Schulze. This is particularly if you are
working with Oracle 8i and Oracle9i versions of RMAN.

There are many, I will name a few I like:

O'Reilly Performance Tuning (Older but just awesome)
O'Reilly Oracle Internals (More focused and advanced, but great)
Oracle SQL High performance Tuning (Make sure you get the Guy Hammond
version, excellent SQL Book)
Oracle Press Oracle Performance Tuning (tusc) (Again, great book, more
up to
date, and detailed)
Unix and Oracle 8i Performance tuning (Great book for those newer to
Unix
but has some more advanced things as well).

These I have read and can vouch for, although there are some other books
I
must say are great and are not completely tuning related:

O'Reilly PL/SQL Programming
Practical Oracle 8i
Learning Korn Shell

And heard a lot of great things about Rachel's book forgive me if I get
the
name wrong,

Oracle DBA 101

And finally, I must say BookPool.com is the best for getting books, I
get
things in 1 day even though I pay for 5 day ground (love 1 day ship
zones).

Plus their prices are 90% of the time 40% off and reasonable shipping
(they
use USPS as well). Although they only have technical books it seems
(what
other books are worth while? Besides maybe Lord of the Rings).

thanks for the vote of confidence in our book (yes you got the name

fragmentation.

for tuning, I'd add Oracle Performance Tuning 101 by Gaja Krishna
Vaidyanatha and Kirti Deshpande of this list. It's a great basics book

RE: Book review

The OCP Exam Guide by Couchman is excellent. I read it cover to cover for my OCP (8)
exams. However, I did find it didn't cover some topics covered on the Tuning exam.

I didn't buy his Practice Exams so I can't say on those. But, in my opinion you can
never have enough tests. I bought practice exams from STS and also took practice tests
on brainbench.com
