[OGD] Peru

2006-10-11 Thread Bill Bergstrom

While I have the utmost respect for the Moores..and
spent time with them in the old days when one could collect in Peru..pre
CITES...I have one dispute about what was said in their latest letter..They
should very well know that Manuel started flasking in the 80s..I spent many a
day (sometimes a month at a time) at Manuels house..and I can assure you that he
had a very nice flasking operation going even then...So it does not surprize me
that he has full grown plants to sell from flask...and I can also assure you
that the K seedlings are genuine...and that he also made at least one hybrid
with it...though mine all died...as for whether he is trying to corner the
market..I cannot agree with any such action if , indeed, he has purposely done
so...just that he does have, and has had, full grown plants from flask..and NOT
whether some of the plants to be sold might be collected...that has and always
will be done by nurseries..Binot in Brazil was known for that practise..as
others, I am sure...

[OGD] partnership with Chinese Floranational (UK)

2006-10-11 Thread viateur . boutot
WISBECH firm

[Wisbech, Cambridgeshire (Cambs) :

http://www.picturesofengland.com/images/mapofengland/england-counties.gif]

Suttons, featured recently in the Sunday Times/Virgin Atlantic Top 100 UK
companies, has acquired a 50 per cent stake S-Flora, a collaboration with
China's leading producer of exotic Orchid plants, Floranational.

Between the two companies there are now over 250 hectares of covered
production area involving over 2000 employees, said Derek Burgoyne,
Suttons' managing director.

Suttons will use the specialist knowledge and growing techniques of the
Chinese within the company's seven hectare glasshouse complex at their P A
Moerman site near Spalding, a site that has previously been awarded Grower
of the Year on two consecutive years.

Richard Coats, sales director at Suttons, said: Not only do we have the
specialist knowledge and expertise from China to produce superior quality,
but we will be able to offer major retailers and wholesale the best range
and prices throughout Europe'

Mr Burgoyne says he is excited about the prospects of developing other new
and rare types of plants in China from Floranational's extensive micro
propagation facilities,.

It would be very satisfying if we could be developing new products in
China, finishing them off in the UK, and exporting them to Europe in the
future, he said.

Much as we admire and respect the Dutch industry, we strive to be the very
best in our industry bar none he said.

Re: [OGD] Peru

2006-10-11 Thread Peter Croezen

Concerning the Lee and Zadith Moore letter posted on this forum Oct 10,
2006, by SheriffOrr.

I was not at all surprised at what Lee andZadithMoore said in
their letter, concerning theArias "laboratory" and their doubt that the
Peruflora Pk seedlings sold are genuine Pk. This has all been said
before, bothin Peru and outside its borders.

The difference this time is that it is being said by the Moores, who have
lived and collected orchids in Peru for over 45 years; who know every orchid
collector and every vendor in the area they live and workin,
Moyobamba, Peru, near where the Pk habitats once were. Theyknow Manuel
Arias very well, havinggone on orchid collecting trips with
Manuelfor many years.

Lee is highly respected in the orchid world; he has discovered many
new orchid species and other plantspecies, several were named after him.
Leehasbeen awarded many honours by many biological
institutes. The most recent one on October 4, 2006 I will post in a message
right after this one. Finally, Lee has never been afraid to speak out and
put it in writing.

Whatever Lee says about Peru, Peruvian people and Peruvian orchids, you
better believe he knows what he is talking about, as does his wife Zadith, who
is Peruvian born.

To Bill Bergstrom who said:
"Manuel started flasking in the 80s..I spent many a day (sometimes a month at a
time)
at Manuel's house..and I can assure you that he had a very nice flasking operation going
even then."

1) Exactly wherewas that "Manuel Arias flasking lab" located, when
youvisited it in the 80's?

2) Was this lab at his home, or at his greenhouses complex in Lima?

3) Have you visited that labsince 1995 and what did you find as far
as number of flasks?

4) Have you visitedthe Arias Pk propagation labsince
2002?

Bill, youalso said:
"...and I can also assure you
that the K seedlings are genuine..."

5) How can you be so certain; what proof do you have for those who
purchased them and are worried?

Re: [OGD] kovachii

2006-10-11 Thread Stephen Manza
The accusation that the kovachii seedlings from Peruflora are possibly
not kovachii was once again made in OGD 8(348) in the letter Richard
Orr posted from the Moore's and reinforced by Peter Croezen in OGD
8(349).

As an observer, I want to know if anyone has any proof or even any
reasonably sound evidence that the Peruflora Pk are not what they were
sold as? So far all I have heard is hearsay and innuendo (e.g., a
friend of a friend who visited the greenhouse told me...).

I get the feeling this is one of those situations where the truth of
the plants' origin won't be known for certain until the fastest
growing seedlings start blooming. Although only 5 plants were legally
collected by each nursery, each plant probably had 10+ mature growths.
Some of the collected plants were undoubtedly in bud or bloom (as
evidenced by their display in bloom at an orchid show in late 2003 and
the Koopowitz article in the Oct/Dec 2003 OD article). Phrag.
kovachii spikes typically carry 1-3 blooms. In three years' time, it
wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that at least 50-100 seedpods could
be produced.

And a quick question: Does anyone know how many Peruvian nurseries
have been authorized to collect 5 plants each of Phrag. kovachii? Is
there a list somewhere on the INRENA site? I don't read Spanish, so I
can't tell.

Thanks,

--Stephen

[OGD] MAdison Who's Who--SPAM??

2006-10-11 Thread Barbara
Peter,

I get dozens of these kinds of offers. They are as valuable as the
cost of sending the unsolicited message Nothing. Check out the
member list. Oh, sorry, you can't unless you are a member... And it
costs you something to become a member. This sounds pretty good but,
sorry to say, the spammers and crooks out there are getting better and
better. This is someone trying to get Lee Moore to part with his money.
Who cares about Madison's Who's Who?
