Bob Fuchs' nursery in the Redland...
orchids, collected by his grandfather and placed in the nooks of oak trees
more than 60 years ago.
Fuchs, the owner of R.F. Orchids nursery and a third-generation grower,
remains an... advocate of old-school orchid techniques despite
the pressures of foreign competition and
a booming market that has placed the once rare blooms in big-box stores and
supermarkets.
... Fuchs... specializes in unique and hard-to-find varieties...

the 19th Annual World Orchid Conference...
orchid enthusiasts... converge on Miami-Dade for the... event, including
visitors and vendors from every continent save Antarctica[why not ?]

The past decade has brought... growth to the orchid market, with wholesale
values increasing more than 200 percent, according to the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.
...
Orchids are second... to poinsettias as the most popular potted plant in
the United States.
Florida is one of the top-producing states... with nearly $50 million in
wholesale volume.
California and Hawaii are also big producers.
...
While facing increased land costs, small-scale nurseries are struggling to
find a niche in an increasingly competitive market.
Larger operations are constantly looking to perfect production and
modernize their facilities.
...
Homestead-based Kerry's Bromeliads, one of the largest orchid growing
operations in the country, with about half a million units in stock during
the peak four-week period around Mother's Day.
...
said McHatton [Ron..., director of education for the American Orchid Society].
Where we are today is basically orchid as a commodity. The market demands
that you modernize. You can't really afford to grow something that takes 10
years to flower.''
...
He predicts smaller nurseries will eventually find a foothold in catering
to customers looking to move beyond a one-time orchid purchase.

''The smaller boutique nurseries I grew up with are really struggling. It's
hard to compete with a $15 phaelonopsis in a Home Depot,'' he said. ``You
may have a thousand people buy an orchid and 900 will eventually throw it
away. But the rest will get hooked, and they're going to go to a nursery
like Bob's.''

Fuchs -- whose potted plant sales have increased 75 percent in the past
decade and whose business has an annual revenue of $1.5 million -- offers
tours of greenhouses on weekends and employs staff members who can answer
detailed questions about orchid maintenance. He is also part of a group of
Redland business owners hoping to market the area as a destination for
agri-tourism...

The [World Orchid] conference... has sold out the 334-room Sheraton...

The Taiwanese government... backed orchids as a replacement for an ailing
sugar industry, offering low-interest loans and other incentives. In 2004,
a group of Hawaiian growers unsuccessfully filed suit against the USDA to
block the importation of Taiwanese orchids. The country now supplies more
than a quarter of orchids worldwide, according to the Taiwan Trade Center
in Miami.
...
''Orchids have become the chic thing, and it's yet to hit its peak,'' said
McHatton. ``We're at a point that whatever you can produce, the market will
absorb.'' [comments welcome !]

[OGD] QA / bud dropping

2008-01-27 Thread viateur . boutot
Q. ... moth orchid... with buds bloomed for... a couple of weeks before
the remaining buds dried up and fell off... ?

A.[Denise Corkery / Chicago Botanic Garden]

phalaenopsis... discolored or dropping buds usually signal one or more
problems with temperature or watering.

Moving plants from one environment to another can create a houseplant
version of transplant shock, especially in the winter when insufficiently
protected plants are exposed to cold outdoor temperatures.
Make sure newly purchased moth orchids are carefully wrapped for the trip
home.
Once there, avoid placing plants by windows where nighttime temperatures
can drop suddenly and/or fall below 65 degrees.

Moth orchids also require soil[!] that is evenly moist.
Plants should be watered until excess moisture is dripping from the
container's drainage hole.
Use only room temperature water.
Then allow the potting material to become slightly dry before watering
thoroughly again.
Moth orchids will not tolerate soggy roots, so do not allow containers to
sit in saucers with standing water.
When repotting, use a quick-drying terra-cotta pot and fast-draining,
bark-based orchid mix.

Moth orchids blossoms should last for two to three months.

[OGD] WOC

2008-01-27 Thread BevTall
I just returned from the World Orchid Conference and it is the best
one yet. The displays were wonderful and the quality of the plants
unsurpassed. Krull Smith received 47 medals for their plants
alone. Their paphs were unbelievable! They had to do a lot of
climate control to get the multi-florals to bloom this time of
year. There were many wonderful exhibits and it looked like the
whole event was well attended. The speaker line up had a wide
variety that would satisfy just about everyone. Florida did a great
job! Singapore is the next one in 3 years. They have a high
standard to meet after this one. Congratulations Florida!!!
Bev

[OGD] Edmond Albius (Reunion)

Edmond Albius...

A 51 ans

[OGD] Singapore at the World Orchid Conference

2008-01-27 Thread viateur . boutot
At the... 19th World Orchid Conference in Miami, orchids from Singapore
picked up 26 awards for individual plants as well as two top display awards.
...
the garden display created by Singapore's National Parks Board in
partnership with the Orchid Society of Southeast Asia, taking the Gold
Medal for International Display and Best of Show award, along with two
other top awards.

The design titled Orchids in Harmony... a 50 sqm display of a modern
Asian courtyard garden which also reflects the cultural diversity of
Singapore through the use of different colours and types of tropical orchids.

Describing Singapore's success in Miami as an outstanding win the CEO of
NParks said the award is also an affirmation of the calibre of local
talent. The win also could not be timelier, especially since Singapore is
hosting the next World Orchid Conference in 2011 said Mr Ng Lang.

... the last time Singapore played host was in 1963.

The winning Singapore display was created by Alan Tan Chye Soon, Assistant
Director of NParks. This is the second Gold Medal win at the World Orchid
Conference by 37 year-old horticulturist who designs gardens and floral
displays for NParks.
...
Singaporeans should get a glimpse into similar winning designs by the
NParks team later this year at the biennial Singapore Garden Festival. The
festival will be held at the Suntec Convention Exhibition Centre from 25
July to 1 August.
