[OGD] Concerning new combinations in the genus Cattleya

2008-07-27 Thread peter croezen
Tennis,

You may find some useful information in Neodiversity, which is a journal of
neotropical biodiversity. It's latest issue of March 10 2008 contains an
article by Cassio van den Berg,
New Combinations In The Genus Cattleya Lindl. (Orchidaceae) Here is the URL to
that article, in pdf.

As far as I know, Gary, its Kew or the RHS's orchid hybrid registrar.
The Kew Checklist deals with the accepted names of species and natural
hybrids. The RHS orchid registrar, Julian Shaw, deals only with
registered artificial hybrids and their species ancestors.
Difficulties arise when:
There are differences between natural populations that have
horticultural significance but no taxonomic significance. Occasionally
the registrar keeps the nomenclatural difference, at least for the
time being. An example is Phrag. ecuadorense. This occurs in other
families, too, for example, Black Hills spruce.
There is confusion about a natural hybrid that is also a cultivated
hybrid.
There is a lag between publication of a new botanical name and its
acceptance for hybrid registration.
To tell you the truth, I have found errors in both the Kew Checklist
(usually typos) and the RHS registration (usually caused by a change
delay). They are both run by humans. If you see a discrepancy in
either of them, just ask. They will be happy to explain it to you, or
correct the error if there is one.

[OGD] Nak. Edwin Hausermann

2008-07-27 Thread iriscohen
I have a small plant of Nak. Edwin Hausermann 'Nancy', HCC/AOS (Ascf.
Peaches x V. cristata). Last year it produced one normal flower. It is
in bloom again with several flowers buds, but one flower has only
one petal, two flowers have no petals. It is outside all summer in
pretty much full sun, bark mix in a slotted pot. I have an old
Darwinara that has never given me any trouble.
Is there a cultural factor I'm missing? Is there a genetic problem
caused by over-meristemming? Should I ask for a refund?

[OGD] New Catt naming

2008-07-27 Thread Schnitz
Yes, to the question of if others are nterested in the misssing names, with
Laelia crispa part of the etc. Cynthia, Prescott, AZ

I don't see any mention of L.perrinii, among others (L.tenebrosa,
L.lobata, etc.). Anyone know if there will be a further addition to this
enumerating those left out or if we should assume the species epithet
remains the same though transferred to Cattleya (i.e., C.perrinii), or
if in fact, he just forgot some?

Re: [OGD] cattleya names

2008-07-27 Thread Nina Rach
Based on what I learned at AOS judging yesterday at the Parkside Orchid Fest in
Ottsville, PA, we are not going to start using the newly lumped nomenclature
until it has gone through the formal challenge, rebuttal, and final approval
process. This is according to Cordelia Head, who attended/participated in the
recent SSC/IUCN meetings. She has voluntarily served with this group for many
years (decade? longer?).

So AOS awards will continue to be filed as before, until further notice.

Apparently the IUCN's decision to lump was published in the latest AQ, but I
have not yet received my copy.

Schnitz,

These other species had already been placed in Cattleya years before. I had
the same question and Casio gave us the old references.

[OGD] Heating over the winter

2008-07-27 Thread ogd
With the jump in the price of energy, supposedly there will be high
heating bills this winter, I was wondering what effect this maybe having
on people who grow orchids especially in colder climates? Have energy
prices jumped up dramatically this year in Australia, Europe, and the
rest of the world? Changing how you will heat the greenhouse? Dropping
growing warm to intermediate orchids to grow more cool growers? Not
growing orchids? How have growers in the southern hemisphere done this
winter?
With oil prices looking like they will be going up for years to come,
growing warm growing orchids looks expensive in cold winter climates.

Laelia perrinii and Laelia lobata are missing because they were originally
described by Lindley as species of Cattleya.

Frankly though I am glad to see the large artificial 'sophronitis'
lumping rejected, I am more comfortable with the earlier classification
involving Brasilaelia, etc. - I don't really think the Hoffmannseggellas
belong in cattleya for example.
