What is the Australian Orchid Council doing to try and grow this species
from seed and trying to keep it alive in cultivation? If you can get it to
grow in cultivation then there will always be a reservoir of plants
available to reintroduce it somewhere. Even though it may have no commercial
value I am sure that there are enough species nuts who would welcome the
challenge to try and grow it.

Re: [OGD] Vanilla

2006-12-31 Thread Mike O'Connor
Hi All,
A very happy and healthy New Year to you all. I need help and I need it
yesterday! I have been asked to give a 15 to 20 minute talk on orchids to a
Rotary Club and what I want to do is to talk about orchids in general i.e.
what is an orchid, how did they get their name, where do they grow and uses
of orchids. What I am looking for is for a reference to an illustration that
I have seen relating to Vanilla and the Aztecs at some festival swinging
arouns a maypole. If anybody has such an illustration would they please
e-mail me a scanned copy? I am sure that I have seen this illustration in an
orchid book or magazine. Many thanks in advance.
Keep well and kind regards

So I look forward to postings on this (news)group regarding the subject

Re: [OGD] Bulbophyllum tingabarinum

2006-03-14 Thread Mike O'Connor

Thanks Jose. I looked up Seidenfaden(pages 37 to
39)and according to him no definite type specimen is available. That being
the case then how can Kew accept a description without a type specimen? Perhaps
since Seidenfaden's work was published a type specimen has turned
up.
Once again many thanks for the much appreciated
reply.
Keep well and kind regards

  Subject: Bulbophyllum tingabarinum

The Rolfe entity does not have priority. As a matter of fact, if one
accepts Kew as the arbiter for species nomenclature ( as the AOS does),
Rolfe's Cirrhopetalum miniatum cannot be transfered to Bulbophyllum ( the Kew
accepted generic concept ) since there is a 1904 publication for a
Bulbophyllum miniatum ( a supposedly Tropical African species)
[Bulbophyllum miniatum auct., Orchid Rev. 12: 118 (1904).]
Kew makes the whole nomenclature issue more fun by reducing
Bulbophyllum tingabarinum and Bulbophyllum flaviflorum to synonyms to
Bulbophyllum pecten-veneris (Gagnep.) Seidenf., Dansk Bot. Ark. 29:
37 (1973 publ. 1974). based on the replaced basionym Cirrhopetalum
  pecten-veneris Gagnep., Bull. Soc. Bot. France 78: 6 (1931).
which is the name with priority once the Rolfe's 1914 name is reduced to
  non-usability.

Re: [OGD] Bulbophyllum tingabarinum

2006-03-11 Thread Mike O'Connor
Many thanks to all those who replied to my taxonomic query regarding
Epidendrum cristatum vs Epidendrum raniferum.
I now have another taxonomic query on which I would value guidance.
I bought a plant labelled as Bulbophyllum tingabarinum (which has just
finished flowering now in our autumn) and as is my habit I always try and
verify that the label is correct.
In Seidenfaden's Notes of Cirrhopetalum he transfers Cirrhopetalum
flavflorum Liu Su to Bulbophyllum flaviflorum and gives as a synonym
Rolfe's Cirrhopetalum miniatum.
In Siegerist's Bulbophyllums and their allies she lists Bulbophyllum
tingabarinum (described by Garay, Hamer and Siegerist in 1994) and gives as
a synonym Rolfe's Cirrhopetalum miniatum but states that Bulbophyllum
flaviflorum (Liu Su) Seidenfaden is NOT a synonym.
My queries are these :
1) If Rolfe's name was published in 1913 why does it not have preference?
2) If Liu Su's description was valid and Rolf'e's not, I can understand
Seidenfaden transferring it to Bulbophyllum from Cirrhopetalum but why, if
Rolfe's description is a synonym for some technical reason for the
Seidenfaden plant, is Bulbophyllum tingabarinum then also not a synonym of
Bulbophyllum flaviflorum. It is true that the colours are different but my
plant looks identical to Seidenfaden's line drawings.
3). Is Garay et al's description valid?
Many thanks in advance.
Oh! by the way the plant is a delghtful little plant and as Shakespeare said
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
Keep well and kind regards
Mike

[OGD] Re : Epidendrum

2006-03-05 Thread Mike O'Connor

Hi All,
Can somebody clarify something for me please.
I have a plant (flowering now) which was given to me
a long time ago (about 1969). The plant originally came from Brazil and I seem
to think that it was called Epidendrum raniferum. However in that useful little
book by Julian Kenny ("Native Orchids of the Eastern Caribbean") there is
a picture that looks exactly like my plant's flowers but it is labelled as
Epidendrum cristatum. I did a Google search for both names and I got identical
photos under both names.
Can anybody tell me if these two names are synonymous and
which name is the correct one?
Many thanks in advance

[OGD] Fw: Vanda name

2005-01-20 Thread Mike O'Connor

Hi All,
Did not get a reply to my question on how to differentiate
Vanda teres from Vanda Miss Jaoquim so I presume nobody knows.
Another Vanda question. In Barbados I saw orchids labelled
as "Vanda Mervyn Velthuis". Does anybody know if this is a valid name or if
somebody has just transcribed the wrong namefrom Vanda Mevr L Velthuis?

Incidentally what is the origin of the name "Mevr L
Velthuis"? I would guess that it is the Nederlands/Dutch for Mrs L Velthuis
which in South Africa would be abbreviated Mev (no "r") L Velthuis.
Any ideas
Thanks in advance

Are there any characterisitcs that can be used to

I will be leaving in a weeks time to go on a cruise of the
Caribbean. does anybody know of any orchid growers in the area who might be
willing to show me orchids growing in the wild? We will be visiting
Barbados/Tobago/St Lucia/St Kitts/Catalina Island(Dominican Rep.)
/Tortola/Antigua/Dominica/Grenada/Bonaire (Nederlands Antilles)/Grand
Cayman/Ochos Rios (Jamaica).
Alternatively could somebody please give me an e-mail
address for the membership secretary of the AOS so that I can enquire if they
have any affiliated societies in those places.
I would also be grateful if anybody knows of places to
visit in those islands where I might see orchids.
Many thanks

[OGD] Re: Cattleyas

2004-11-23 Thread Mike O'Connor
Hi folk,
I have two questions that I hope other subscribers to the two lists can
please help me wiht.

Question 1 :
I have two Cattleyas flowering now. One is labelled as Cattleya gaskelliana
and the other as Cattleya mendelii. They both look the same or at the very
least similar.
How do I know/ tell the difference between these two species? If I look at
photos in books and on the Internet I cannot tell the difference.

Question 2 :
I bought a plant which was labelled as Dendrobium chryseum. It looks
different to my Dendrobium fimbriatum var occulatum but I cannot find a
photo of Dendrobium chryseum nor can I find a description (have not looked
too hard for that!). Flowering now also I have a plant that I bought as
Dendrobium flaviflorum from Taiwan. I believe that this is now called
Dendrobium fimbriatum. Structurally it looks like my Dendrobium fimbriatum
var occulatum and it too is different from the plant labelled as Dendrobium
chryseum.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Keep well and kind regards
Mike
