Re: [Origami] Celebrating Wensdy Whitehead and teacher request

2023-10-08 Thread fayeg
Hi Lisa,

I plan to attend Wensdy's Memorial Zoom service. Thank you for setting it
up.

I love her flapping bird wearing a crane costume, but it is probably too
difficult to teach via zoom. Let me know what you think.

Subject: [Origami] Celebrating Wensdy Whitehead and teacher request

Dear Loving Folders,

I am saddened, as we all are, by the loss of a dear friend and mentor, the
prolific origami designer Wensdy Whitehead who passed at the age of 51 on
May 7, 2023.

Wensdy was both a talented folder and designer, but most of all, she was
known for her generosity with her time. She shared her unique and original
works (miniature and oversized models, Harry Potter origami, Storigami,
modulars, shovel-fold words, and more) with new and experienced folders, and
introducing new folders to the fun of origami, through her formal and
impromptu classes.

As we mourn Wensdy's passing, we are also looking forward to commemorating
her caring, intellectual, and pun-filled life at the Memorial Zoom Service
on Saturday, November 11, 2023 - the last day of World Origami Days and
Veterans Day for the veteran she was.

The Origami Museum features Wensdy at

https://origamimuseum.org/wensdy-whitehead/; diagrams are available there.

Her Memorial Zoom Service will be Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 4PM, EST,
hosted by OrigamiUSA.

At the service we will:

- Welcome you,

- Share memorabilia images,

- Hear friends and family speak,

- View her origami portfolio,

- Attendees can ask to speak briefly, and

- At the 1-hour point for the next 30-60 minute we will fold her models.

This is a time to honor Wensdy's life, celebrate, and grow from her life's
work, which are now available to folders, as she wished.

I am looking for teachers (and students) for folding Wensdy's origami
models.

   - First, a call for a Zoom teacher of Wendsy's models for the
Memorial zoom on Saturday, November 11, 2023, around 5pm during the memorial
zoom starting at 4pm EST. I particularly think her Gabby Guppy storigami
model and her Love Bug heart transplant model would be fitting. Find the
diagrams at
https://origamimuseum.org/memorial-gallery/.

   - Also, I am looking for folder to teach in-person at the OrigaMIT
Convention, Cambridge, MA, on Saturday, November 4, after a brief
introduction, as a big tribute to her.

   - Finally, during World Origami Days from October 24 to November 11,
I can host zooms to learn more of Wensdy's models. Let me know if you are
interested in teaching or folding her models on a zoom I can host, or if you
plan to do something independently.

Please send me a RSVP and additional details for:

   - Attending the zoom memorial,

- Learning her models

   - Teaching her models

- Sending photos/images

- Writing a brief tribute of words you would like to share, or

- Anything else.

My email is l...@origamimuseum.com.

I will send out more information with additional details to those interested
in honoring Wensdy.

Kindly,

Lisa B. Corfman

[Origami] Book recommendation - Easy Animals

2023-08-17 Thread fayeg
Hi all,
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I haven’t been able to find a
recent response.

I was asked to recommend a beginner's animal book. I think the child is about
7. She will be working with her grandmother.
Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Faye

Re: [Origami] Octagon + triangles shape name

2023-05-09 Thread fayeg
Yesterday I was in Pompei and saw these tiles forming this shape of an octagon
surrounded by equilateral triangles and I had seen it last week in some
churches as well. Pompei is from the 1 st century AD and churches a few
centuries older which surprised me even though the shape is simple and logical
and has been used by Chirs Palmer and several others even myself in origami
stars and tessellations.

So I was wondering if this shape has a name and if someone can share any
interesting information about it.

Perhaps a link to see what you are referring to?

We’ve tried ‘everything’, Google, Images, Flickr, Insta, Pinterest but nothing
came up.

Who recognizes this model and can help her out of her misery?

Her gratitude will be . I don’t know, huge probably

Re: [Origami] Cataloguing query

2022-03-25 Thread fayeg
I'll make a plug for Library Thing. Very reasonably priced. (I just checked
and at the beginning of the pandemic, they made it free!)
It is very easy to add books. They have a database with lots of libraries,
amazon, Library of Congress, etc. and they already know non Latin alphabets
and what the last name is.

I have no involvement, just a happy user.

Do you catalogue the books using an on-line service? Index cards? Other?

Thanks Vishakha, I hadn’t seen it either.

Hello! Not sure if this video has been seen by ppl. Maybe yes since it is three
years old. But it is new to me now and so I thought I’d share it with you all.

See the YouTube video that shows how Britney Gallivan folded a piece of paper
12 times in half. It’s a world record I believe.

Re: [Origami] Looking for "turtle" paper

In the past, stores in Philadelphia Chinatown sold them pretty cheaply. I
haven't seen in years. I also haven't been to Chinatown since the pandemic.
