Re: [OSList] Invitation to "beam into" WOSONOS

2019-10-22 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
Dear OST Friends,

Live from WOSONOS this Friday at noon EDT, I will be hosting a hybrid
virtual and in-person gathering during what will be the lunch break there.
You are all invited to “beam in” via Zoom and connect with some of the
participants. This is happening in the context of the Now What?!
global gathering that I have posted about
here previously.

Call in information, calendar links, and RSVP options are here:
https://teamup.com/event/show/id/DVSjhuNDYtv3z9BRKb2GUr397MVHov

We will also attempt to self-organize some “buddy pairs” with people at the
conference and people who want to continue “beaming in.” The idea is that
you can be on Zoom (or Skype, etc.) and be the guest of your in-person buddy
at whatever session(s) they choose to attend. Note that, as someone pointed
out on the OS Hotline today, virtual participants may not be welcome in all
the WOSONOS sessions, and we will ask permission of their initiators before
bringing someone into the room in this way. I might create a Google
spreadsheet “bulletin board” we can use to help coordinate this buddy
invitation, unless someone else wants to give that a go?

Also, since Now What?! runs through November 22, it can be a platform for
WOSONOS participants who wish to continue their conversations once the
conference is over (and also a way to invite more people into them). Here’s
a two minute video that describes the Now What?! process, which borrows from
both OST and World Café, among other things: http://bit.ly/NW3promo3

If you have any questions or feedback, please email me here:

Cheers,

Ben Roberts

[OSList] CommonBound conference virtual Open Space follow-up

2018-06-25 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
The CommonBound conference is a biannual
gathering of people committed to the movement for a new "social solidarity
economy." I'm here in St. Louis for the event, and I'm inviting folks I
connect with at the conference to join me for some Open Space calls via Zoom
next week. Our goal is to share what we learned and help keep the momentum
going from this inspiring event. It's a small experiment in how virtual OST
might be used to amplify the impact of conferences. Join us?

Our invitation is here . The calls are Weds, June
27 from 7-9pm EDT and Thurs June 28 from 12-1pm EDT.

Conference livestreaming can be found here

[OSList] FW: Movement Weavers Global Open Space: Tomorrow and Next Weds

2018-04-10 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
Please see the Open Space invitation below, via Zoom tomorrow, April 11 and
next Weds April 18, from 10:00-12:00 EDT.

This is part of a series of virtual and in-person gatherings for an emerging
community of "movement weavers," i.e. people who identify with transformational
work being done across all aspects of the human presence on Mother Earth, in
order to move us into greater harmony with our needs and those of the planet.
We recognize the fundamental interconnectedness and interdependence of all
things, and our shared responsibility to tend to the well-being of all.

Our intentions are to:
--Explore our individual “heart’s call”

--Be together in community

--Generate a flow of resources for our work individually and collectively, and
in support of work in the wider world that inspires us.

If this resonates for you, please join us! We are also on Facebook
  (ugh, I know!) and share
updates via this email list.

Re: [OSList] OS online facilitators for hire?

2017-03-13 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
I also do this work, using Zoom or MaestroConference. The latter works better
for larger groups (40 or more), and has “true” law of two feet capabilities,
but is usually audio only (though they are beta-testing video form breakouts
too). Happy to collaborate with both of you. In my experience, you need
multiple hosts to do this well.

I have also done OS engagements that weave in “asynchronous” conversations as
well, and that stretch the process out over a week or even a month.

Hello how are you I usually work on line with Zoom.us and with it you can have
a large group and divide teh group in smalle groups. Y can work with this

I have also several experiences as a participant in larger groups using this

facilitator .

If you want we can talk about this topic.

I remember a while back attending an online open space (offered through
collaborative meeting software with multiple rooms) that was being
professionally facilitated by a facilitator who offered online OS's to the
community at a rather reasonable rate. Does anyone know of someone who might
fit this bill? (It doesn't have to be the same person...)

Re: [OSList] What is the sweet spot for Online OS using video chat?

2016-08-30 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
As someone who’s been part of the community exploring virtual OS going back to
2012, I resonate with Birgitt’s rhetorical question: “might not the most useful
offering to provide to be something that takes time, that is not quick, that
provides space for people who are reflective, thoughtful to be in genuine
conversations?” I believe we’ve had the tools for creating “minimalist” OS
experiences since Maestro was developed in 2009. If we don’t see virtual OS
taking place extensively, perhaps that’s because we haven’t figured out what
the uniquely enlivening essence of that virtual experience might be. So
devotees of the in-person process find virtual engagements to be intriguing,
but lacking some vital juiciness that would cause them to want to convene such
engagements regularly.

Maybe we’re still just in an early learning phase, not only in terms of the
technical tools, but also (more importantly) the approaches to hosting that can
really create hospitable virtual space. In person, I think “the OST experiment”
has shown that we can trust a whole set of instincts that come naturally to us
as social beings to do much of that space-holding work for us. But our virtual
norms of behavior are still evolving, and the tools are evolving even faster.
And so we don’t fully trust them, and we also focus more on the tech/tools and
less on the processes and social agreements we might bring to bear. Indeed, we
often expect the tools/platforms to do everything for us (or at least to make
things really easy and simple), and if that isn’t the case, we decide the tool
is the problem, rather than our lack of process innovation.

Here’s an example of a key challenge: the magic of in-person OST takes time to
unfold. As anyone who’s tried to do a one or two round version has learned,
such mini-OS engagements rarely provide anything like the depth of insight and
sense of a collective journey that a full day can offer, never mind a
traditional two-and-a-half day schedule. But we are, it seems to me, afraid to
ask people to show up virtually for that long and intensive a process. Indeed,
I find that proposing even a two-hour engagement often generates resistance
with potential sponsors. That’s partly because, for many of us (even those who
do so regularly!), it is legitimately unappealing to spend all day in front of
a screen or on the phone. But it’s also due to a set of assumptions we make
about participants’ attention spans and availability. How accurate are those
assumptions?

Going back to Birgitt’s question, what inspires me these days is a vision of
hybrid in-person/virtual engagements lasting anywhere from one week to three
months, that include collective inquiry, community building, and
crowd-resourcing. It’s anything but minimalist. OST-like processes are a core
tool, but more important are the OST principles that embody personal freedom
and personal responsibility. What excites me about this concept is the
expansion of time, the appeal to our collective hunger for participation in
“communities of purpose,” and the possibility of glocal (global + local)
impact. These are all things that can play to the strengths of our new virtual
tools and spaces.

When I first read Margaret Mead’s statement that small groups of thoughtful,
committed citizens are the only thing that has ever changed the world, I
assumed that such groups were rare, very hard to form, and required huge
commitments from their members. Thus the concept, while intuitively appealing
and no doubt meant to inspire citizen activism, also seemed to imply
significant barriers to entry. What if, thanks to our new virtual capacities,
it is now easy to bring together not just small, but medium and large-sized
groups of such citizens to generate collective impact? What if we could even
participate effectively in our spare time, say by watching a bit less TV for a
month?!

What if the main thing holding us back from exercising this new power is the
lack of a new story of collective possibility that truly inspires us? Part of
that story needs to be about the tools, but it’s much more about what we might
do with them that could make a difference. With the constant drumbeat of data
about systemic breakdowns, it is all too easy to succumb to cynicism and
despair. Yet we also are aware of pieces of the new story that have been
emerging for decades—OST itself is certainly a part of that emergence. It’s
time to put the pieces together!

Peace,

Ben

[OSList] Please join me next week for Governance Lab!

2015-06-19 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
Dear Open Space colleagues [with apologies for cross-posting]:

I'm very excited to be hosting Governance Lab, an experiment in virtual
Open Space, and I would love to have some of you join me if this engagement
calls to you. My partner in this work, Fyodor Ovchinnikov, posted about it a
few weeks back, so I hope y'all are OK with another promo. Any help in
extending personal invitations would also be most appreciated.

What is Governance Lab?

Governance Lab is a virtual social lab or unconference, from June 25th -
July 2nd, on the theme of social ventures that leverage unconventional types
of leadership, governance, and ownership.

. Join a global gathering that connects practitioners innovating in
the field with thought leaders and scholars who are bringing awareness of
this work to academia and the wider world.

. Promote your work, engage in collective inquiry, and request
support for what matters most to you.

* Participation can take place in many ways, and the scheduling is
highly flexible.

DLLs/edit#heading=h.qhjh3kuakxqi

Some process notes for the OST crowd to reflect on.

We're billing this as a social lab/unconference, based on an assessment
that our main audience will resonate more with those terms. I'm curious what
the experience of others has been in this regard?

As far as tech, we'll be using MaestroConference and Zoom for live sessions
(both hosted and self-scheduled), plus Slack as our 24/7 nerve center,
asynch conversation space, and general hangout zone. Should be very
interesting, especially if we can hit a critical participation mass.

Another unconventional move is to open up the agenda creation process in
advance for a limited number of sessions. Our thinking here is that many
prospects might lack sufficient reference points (both for the virtual
process and the broad subject) for deciding to participate, so having some
concrete sense of some of what will be offered is valuable. We will be
careful not to let the agenda get too full before the opening circle on the
25th, however, which will hopefully keep the space feeling truly open. If
any of you would like to take advantage of the opportunity to call a session
in advance, please let me know. And I'm also curious about your experiences
with such a practice. I have a feeling it may turn out to be one of the ways
that our beloved process evolves once it leaves its pure manifestation in
the in-person realm. ;-)

Regards,

Ben

[OSList] Can Conversations on Crises Change Civilization?

2014-12-29 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
Dear colleague (with apologies for cross-posting),

As we move into 2015, are you profoundly concerned about climate change,
serious resource depletion, and other major threats to civilization? Do you
believe that we face an urgent and challenging opportunity to transform our
social systems and cultures that are generating those crises? Are you
interested in what conversational professionals - mediators, conveners,
facilitators and your other fellow advocates and practitioners of dialogue,
deliberation, and process - could do to catalyze powerful collective shifts
that address these disturbing and exciting transformational possibilities?

If so, know that you are not alone. We and many others feel as you do,
passionately. So many people responded to a post about this by Tom Atlee on
the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation discussion list that
three of us called for further conversation and more than 50 signed on, half
of whom participated in an initial conference call on December 15. With
this invitation, we're reaching out to thousands more in our field to see
who else feels called to this vital adventure.

So now we ask you to join us in pioneering a dialogue and deliberation (DD)
community of inquiry and action during January 2015, online using the
hackpad platform and live virtually (using phone and video conferencing),
to more deeply pursue this urgent question that a few dozen of us have
http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans already begun exploring:

What do we, as members of the dialogue and deliberation community of
practice, have to be and do to enable our most positive transformational
impact, in the face of emerging global crises which fundamentally challenge
our business-as-usual habits and systems?

We know there are a number of ways to come at this question, so we are using
January to explore different possibilities, while building relationships
among those of us who have passion about this topic. You'll see below that
we've scheduled a number of virtual meetings, using different methods, all
in this one month-both in direct audio/video dialogues and in online written
conversations-in an effort to meet all our different needs as DD agents of
social transformation.

You are welcome to participate in as many or as few of the synchronous
events listed below as you like-and you are encouraged to participate any
time in http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans the online dialogues underway in the
hackpad forums we've provided. Each virtual event can stand on its own, and
each may have different outcomes-some perhaps quite unexpected-but we
suspect that insights and energies emerging in each one will reverberate in
all the rest.

January 6, 2-3:30 ET - a virtual World Cafe for continuing whole-group
exploration of our convening question (above), and other related ones, in
stimulating small groups. The optional harvest at the end will continue
until 4:30 pm ET. Later in January we'll have another virtual World Cafe,
at an evening or weekend time to be announced. Before, during, and after
these events, you can also http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans share ideas on
hackpad (starting now).

January 9, 20, 30 (various times-- http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans see
hackpad) - three virtual Bohm Dialogues, providing space for deeper
reflection and relationship building, available on a reservation basis.

January 13, 2-3:30 ET - a virtual Open Space event to enable anyone to
convene a group to pursue an inquiry or activity about which they have
passion. If you have such a passion, you can introduce it on hackpad
http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans before, during, or after the audio-video
event (starting now). Later in January we'll have another virtual Open
Space event, at an evening or weekend time to be announced. Immediately
following each virtual Open Space event there will be an additional hour of
virtual group sharing and group reports.

As we go through the above activities together, we'll be gaining first hand
understanding about how processes we have usually experienced in person
translate into virtual environments, and about the pros and cons of the
on-line tools we will be using -topics about which we expect to reflect more
later in January. Bearing in mind that this environment and these online
tools may be new to many of us, we will go out of our way to provide as much
technical support as we can in this process. And, we also beg in advance
your forbearance and honest feedback as we explore this new territory
together.

More information about these offerings, as well as ways to get started in
the community of inquiry right now, can be found here on the Welcome
hackpad. http://www.bit.ly/DandDTrans

What happens beyond January-with all of us together and/or in various
subgroups-is up to each of us. As hosts, we are designing the January
experience to encourage various follow-up opportunities to emerge according
to their own energy. This particular cycle of engagements will end at the
end of the

[OSList] A Virtual OST Success Story

2014-09-30 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
As some of you know, I've been at this for a couple of years now. Today,
working on behalf of the Charter for Compassion International
http://charterforcompassion.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=
110391qid=5124428 , I was finally able to host a MaestroConference-based
call that I felt truly lived up to the potential for Open Space in virtual
form (in quotes since I know some of you purists might dispute that this
really was OST!).

Of course, it wasn't like being together in person for a day or two. Indeed,
there was only one round of live small group conversation. But the
combination of an online space that was opened on 9/22 using the hackpad
platform and a 90 minute call eight days later using MaestroConference's
newest social webinar beta really worked. Here are some highlights of the
process (you can also view notes and more here on hackpad
http://www.bit.ly/cfc093014 ):

. We had 43 participants on the call for at least some of the 90
minutes, mostly from the US, but also including several from overseas.

. Six topics were initiated by participants

. In addition to the topic breakouts, there was a meet and greet
session for just hanging out and connecting. This also served as a place to
welcome late-comers to the call. As a result, the latter were easily
integrated and able to join the conversations of their choosing

. The topic conversations lasted a little more than 40 minutes

. We ended with a full group popcorn-style harvest and some
announcements

. A number of participants attended a debrief after the official end
of the call

. A few participants also stayed on the line overtime to continue
their topic conversations

MC's new social webinar worked beautifully, allowing participants to do
the following:

. Exercise the law of two feet (really!)

. See who was in their breakouts (including a thumbnail and contact
info, if provided)

. See who was talking or had their hands up

Using hackpad, we were able to do the following:

. Open the marketplace in advance, in order to both save time on the
call and allow for some online discussion to get going. Five out of the six
topics were initiated in advance.

. Provide an index of topics and the room numbers for each (so
that participants could move themselves to the right room)

. Take collaborative notes during breakouts, with a separate pad for
each one (note that social webinar now also provides shared document
functionality for each breakout room, if desired)

. Continue sharing notes and reflections once the call had ended
(this is still ongoing)

. Make detailed introductions before, during and after the call

. Compile a shared listing of resources

. Make announcements and requests

It was also possible for participants to engage fully via their phones only
(including moving between sessions) without using either hackpad or social
webinar. This was important, as not everyone was able to be at a computer,
and some who were at one had trouble using the online tools.

Not everything was perfect, of course, and there were some lessons learned.
The biggest challenge was that, despite many emails and online explanations
in advance, some people were confused by the three ways to engage (phone,
hackpad and social webinar) or had trouble accessing one or more of these
elements. The vast majority, however, were either able to use these tools or
to have a valuable and satisfying conversation without them.

I expect that there will be future iterations planned on behalf of the
Charter for Compassion, and I will promote them to this listserv now that I
feel comfortable handling larger groups! MaestroConference is also very
interested in promoting a series of large group conversations that could
change the world. Perhaps there are some folks here who might want to
collaborate with me in convening one? They plan for their platform to be
able to manage calls in this way with over a thousand people in the near
future. The thought of being able to regularly engage people at that scale
in this way is pretty exciting!

Peace,

Ben

Re: [OSList] Tool for virtual marketplace?

2014-09-29 Thread Ben Roberts via OSList
I’ve simply used Google docs or a similar platform—“hackpad-- that I like a bit
better for creating a series of linked pages very quickly. These can be
simultaneously edited by a group of people, and changes show up immediately
without the need to refresh one’s screen. The downside is that they are
basically “blank pages,” so you must create structure within them, and rely on
participants to follow directions (or post things for them).

As it happens, I’m hosting a virtual open space (or perhaps more accurately,
“open space-inspired”) conversation tomorrow morning at 11am US Eastern using
hackpad and conference calling. It’s for organizational partners of the Charter
for Compassion International. Since it’s only a 90 minute call, I’ve opened the
marketplace in advance. We have the option of allowing more topics to be
initiated on the fly as well, and I’ll make that call by taking the pulse of
the group when the time comes. You can see the online space here
http://www.bit.ly/cfc093014 (and there is also a link there to register for
the call, if you want to join us). People calling from overseas might want to
try this free VOIP tool
http://maestroconference.zendesk.com/entries/23434887-MC-Dialer , which works
well with the MaestroConference platform we are using for the call.

We are tryibg to organize our first online OpenSpace for our agile community in

We are starting organizing a virtual marketplace, where proponents could post

Is there any tool that could serve to do that?
