François - I'm also a lurker, an introvert, and, in addition, an Open Space

I'll for sure take a closer look at what Daniel is doing! I'd also love to
hear more about what you and Martin are doing.

Following this community has inspired me to start taking small baby steps in
opening space. I've also started to dream BIG. There's a full day 'strategy'
event at my company which is repeated every six months, and where everyone is
invited. It's run in the traditional way with a prepared agenda and all
that... I am supposed to 'facilitate' the event. I'll do it first time in
 April.

My dream would be to Open the Space, but I'm not sure how to get there. I
guess my questions are: Has anyone on this list used Open Spaces as a 'heart
beat' in their organizations? How did you get started? What are your
 experiences?

 Thanks,

Re: [OSList] Do I need therapy for my OST control attitude ?

2016-04-15 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Chris
Smiling when I read ”you need to go to therapy for your need of control” :-) An
Open Space facilitator ;-)
Reminds me of an Open Space some years ago - a ”citizens dialog” around the
city of Stockholm needed to build more place where people can live. It was in
an area where it was known that there was heavily resistans to the plans of
building. Well, the space was open, I went back to my chair and one man came up
to me and wanted to have the microphone to speak first…. I said - ”You are
welcome to raise your topic as anyone else” he looked angrily at me and said
”SO! you are violating the democratic process And I thought with concerns -
am I really doing that perhaps? Since I at that time had no experience in what
we in Sweden call ”samråd” - i.e you have to involve people in the decisions
making process. So I was thinking that may be that was what we did? - but I
just had that thought going through my head for a milli second because the next
thing the man said to me was ”And besides you can’t speak Swedish!! —> I’m from
the south part of Sweden and do not have the accent they speak in Stockholm :-)
So then I realized that he just wanted to be angry :-)

Of course the OST went well, he was still there until the end and the group
wonderfully handled his antagonism and he was not able to infect the others :-)
Trust the process
:o)

Re: [OSList] a substantial difference

2016-08-10 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Hi Birgitt and al,
great distinction, I so often experience that there are great engagement in an
Open Space Technology meeting and also in the follow up meeting afterwards but
when it comes to action planning people suddenly start to look down, the voices
becomes more silent etc and it’s difficult to get the energy for actions.
I will here after talk about both participation and engagement and what that
means for the participants and the sponsors.

So far we are nearly 20 participants - and we have room for more ...! Starting
on thursday with storytelling..

2016-08-10 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Hi Gail,
Me too have wonderful memories of you spending some time with us in Gustavs
room and exploring Gothenburg. Can you imagine - next week he will move to
Linköping to start his study at the University - where did those years go I
wonder !
Thomas will come back and tell more about the storytelling - he is in charge of
that ;-)
I will think of you as you are with us in spirit during the days!
Big hug

2016-07-20 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Hi
I will add that it takes a life time for some to unlearn what consultants
mostly do - intervene, stand on the ”scene” i.e to unlearn that you as a
facilitator is not the most important people in the room. That you have made a
great job when the participants say ” wow” we did this ourselves!”

..and it's also wrong-it says that "facilitators lead and record the resulting
discussions."..

I wonder how and if you can correct articles like this?

[OSList] What's the difference between BarCamp and OST?

2016-08-21 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Dear friends,
Today I heard a woman talking about setting up a meeting using BarCamp as a
method. I asked her to explain to me what it was and when she did that I had a
hard time finding the differences between that and Open Space. One thing was
that, as she explained it, the time slots were 45 minutes then 15 minutes pause
then new 45 minutes and so on. Otherwise it seemed more or less like copy and
paste from Open Space. Anyone who knows more about it?

2016-08-23 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Martin,
I smile when I read your text - I can almost feel your irritation over
comparing OST with Barcamp :-)
Thank you all who had answered - I now think that I will not ever say that it’s
like OST, but that they had borrowed a few thing but got them backwards…(oops)

Re: [OSList] OST facilitation technique: too prescriptive?

2018-01-31 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
HI all,
When I remember :-) I use to say something like ”please return to your seat
after posting your topic because there may be more topics coming up that will
give you ideas of new topics to put up”
And as Thomas said when I sense that the energy for putting up topics is coming
to an end I also say that and also ”but we will wait a little bit because maybe
there are some people who is preparing themselves for putting up something” And
I promise - there is always one or two who step into the circle and announce
their topics.
Cheers

Re: [OSList] Hope Never Dies!

2018-04-03 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Don’t call it Open Space if it’s not Open space!!

Another thing.. I visited my first ”Bar camp” a week ago. Oh my how frustrated
I was with the control! Imagine that we had to stand up and tell our name and
two topic that we would like to talk about (without any obligation to bring
them up). After that the ones who wanted to raise a topic - stod up and read
what s/he wanted to talk about in the 45 min breakout sessions. Then we were
asked to raise our hands if we thought that topic was a good idea - and not if
it’ wasn’t… Just imagine standing up front of all participants with a topic and
no one raised their hand…!
Nothing was said about how to collect the recordings so there was a big
confusion about that. Every breakout session was 45 min and when the time was
out - the ”facilitator” came in the different rooms and announced that the time
was over…
And of course no circles , just tables. Can you imagine me as being an Open
Space ”fundamentalist” being oh so much frustrated…
Oh my - what an interesting experience …
Hugs
:o)

Ha ha,
well you know Birgitt - I learned a lot about myself and my love for an
inviting environment, for letting people take responsibility, to have the
freedom to talk as long as there was energy, how difficult it is with tables
and more :-)
Hugs back

[OSList] canadian tables

2018-12-03 Thread Eva P Svensson via OSList
Hi all,
Long time no see or post from me - but I really need to say that for the first
time since about 20 years with Open Space I had the chance to use ”Canadian
tables” when I worked at the Royal Opera house in Stockholm - and you could
tell that there was NO way to put tape on the walls. Worked great of course :-)
hugs

Dear Harrison,
I echo Thomas in his wishes from Sweden, I’m so thankful that you “discovered”
Open Space as you use to say.
Thanks for my favorite way of “working” - haven’t reached the stadium where I
go and take a nap- but not so far apart...
Lots of love and hugs
