[OT] Password hash cracking

2014-03-22 Thread Greg Keogh
Folks, in Bruce Schneier's latest
newsletterhttps://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram-1403.htmlthere is a
section at the end where he discusses the vulnerability of
passwords. One of the links is to this interesting and frightening article:

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/05/how-crackers-make-minced-meat-out-of-your-passwords/

The hashes in this cracking test were made with plain old MD5, but even
ignoring that, it's a sobering reminder of the progress in guessing and
cracking hashed passwords. I was surprised to learn that salting the hashes
doesn't offer much defence. I was amazed that they were using GPUs for
hashing and a graph shows that they're faster than CPUs ... is that
possible? After this I think the lessons are:

* Schneier suggests you make passwords out of pieces of words and sentences
to avoid predictable formats.
* Use a more recent and computationally intensive hasher.
* Don't let anyone steal your hashes.
* Don't store the whole hash (I learned in Russinovich's book that
msv1_0http://dll.paretologic.com/detail.php/msv1_0.dll
only stores half a user's hash in the registry).

[OT] Noise cancelling earphones for a quiet programming environment?

2014-03-22 Thread Kirsten Greed
Hi All
So that I can concentrate better, I am trying to filter out the mouse
clicking sound from person at the desk next to me.
Has anyone any tech recommendations on how to do this?
Thanks
Kirsten

Do you know what style earphones you want? In ear, over ear etc?

Do you want something with cables or a wireless bluetooth option?

Light weight, over the ear would be best.
Cordless would be a nice to have - but i guess that might add battery
weight.

I called in at Dick Smith and the sales lady said that while there are
earphones that cancel out aeroplane sounds she didnt think there were any
for mouse clicks.

Sorry I do not think I am going to be a lot of help here...

Recommendation: The best thing to do is to get out of the open office
environment, I find that I am greatly affected by background distractions.
I have had five fold productivity increases when working from home or in
some other comfortable place away from the mad office.

If that fails, I have used Bose QuietComfort(R) 15 Acoustic Noise
Cancelling(R) headphones (
http://worldwide.bose.com/axa/en_au/web/quietcomfort_15/page.html) which
are great at cancelling out the background road sounds on the bus, but
pretty useless at the higher frequency office sounds. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Noise-cancelling_headphones#Real-world_performance_of_noise-cancelling_headphonesfor
a discussion on this.

The best solution is that everyone has a work cubical with a lot of sound
deadening material and meetings happen in meeting rooms, not at desks.

2014-03-22 Thread osjasonroberts
+1 for the Bose, had them a few years, used in open plan office to good effect
for stopping background air con hum etc. but won’t cancel someone having a
conversion next to you. Scary think is when you take them off you notice how
much ambient background noise there is.

Anyone enjoy working in open plan offices? Rather have a separate “war room”
where the team sits together??
