With VMWare player you could run your XP across dual monitors. I use it like
that on a Windows 7 host and it works beautifully.

I thought VirtualBox had to be installed as the native OS, but it looks
like it runs under Windows and then I can run more Windows inside it (is
that right?) However, I do feel a bit nervous about a product with which I’m
unfamiliar and I’ve heard no discussion about it amongst people I know. I
know someone who has Linux as the native OS and running Windows inside it
using VirtualBox, but I don’t know how difficult it was to setup and to
 maintain.

I see that XP Mode is simply a pre-configured XP SP3 running under Windows
 Virtual PC.

What about VMWare Player? I’m using this on an older test box and it seems
to run Win7 inside Vista acceptably.

One thing I forgot to mention is that it would be nice if the virtual XP
could use two monitors, but perhaps that’s asking too much at the moment.

Greg,

1. Why in the world would she need to run XP? Can't you run the software
that she needs in XP compatibility mode?
2. If you really really need it: XPMode. You can get the the apps to be
published under W7 but run in the virtual XP directly without her even
knowing the apps run in XP or that there IS an XP. There is no shell to
open, no extra Start button and the app window is part of the normal W7
desktop.
All she gets is an icon in her W7 with an app. XPMode is 100% transparent.
And works great.
I would not bother explaining to my wife what a VM is, why there are two
Start buttons, different desktops and different colours, two task managers
and C: is not C: but is some other random location that you never want to
save to.

Corneliu.

I ask because early last year I had to drop VMWare Server because of mouse,

Microsoft VM is also a contender I suppose, but I haven’t used it for a

What’s the latest recommendation for a home user machine with Win7 and

Corneliu, thanks, this is a fresh way of looking at it. My wife runs some
pretty heavy-duty stuff like Adobe Framemaker, RoboHelp, Photoshop, etc over
huge documents. I'm not directly involved, but I hear her talking of
delicate dependencies on 32 and 64 bit Windows and different versions of
Windows, apparently discussed at length in the relevant forums where they
whine of quirks, bugs and compatibility problems.

I would love to completely avoid XP or any need for a VM, but I'm not
familiar with the XPMode you're describing. Is it some property of the
shortcuts or executable images under Win7? Do I need to install something
under Win7 for this? More hints or links would be welcome.

Greg,

XPMode was designed like that:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspxJust install it,
run it and install the apps you want it in. They are automatically published
in your W7 apps list. Close the VM (it gets closed in kind of a
hibernation mode. You can just click on the icon in the W7 and it just runs.
You don't even have to start the VM (it's starts invisible in the
background)

Corneliu.

Very simple to use.

Has all the standard features of snapshots etc.

Virtual box also has dual monitor support for Guests O/S. I think
VMWare also does.

Another cool feature is Seamless mode.

+1 Virtualbox (along with quite a few others). Also, I've used the dual
screen stuff, it's certainly decent, it can also do x3, x4, etc.

FYI: I use Ubuntu as my desktop OS running XP VMs for development. Works
well.

Good luck :)
