Installed PRTG as I've been looking for something to monitor what my internation students are doing (they were streaming HD TV at one point...). It didn't seem to want to run on Windows 8. I guess it either needs a Server OS or Windows 7? Shame. It sounds like you guys think its good value. I just want real time monitoring of bandwidth leeching. I just fired up PRTG on a box here and I have to say it looks quite tidy. The default sensors configured into the product show that they have been around the traps and know what to look for (number of xlates in a Cisco ASA as a default rule, for example). Splunk is more of a log analysis tool than monitoring software per se. If you want expensive, then there’s always BMC Patrol, IBM Tivoli, and to a lesser extent Microsoft SCOM.
