spirituality

1999-07-06 Thread Trish David

Dear all, in no way did I intend to step on anyone's toes, or make any of
you feel uncomfortable by asking (I'm very curious by nature and love to
explore abstract concepts) people to comment on aspects of spirituality.
My very reasoning was that it is such a hard concept to define, it is
different for different people, it is sooo overlooked in health care, it is
seen often to equate to religion by many, but is something different to
others.

The nature of this forum dictates that only those who are comfortable
airing a public view will do so, and those who are not comfortable but
would nevertheless like to talk can ahve a private dialogue. Public
responses get people thinking and that's cool, but when you want to keep
things personal, you must not feel threatened or obligated to respond.
I hope I haven't been insensitive in asking such a question on the list, I
just find the whole concept so interesting and wanted to know how others
felt, a bit like at a gathering of friends (which I have come to believe
this is).

So thankyou to those who have responded, and to those who didn't but are
thinking about the concept, and to those who will talk when they're ready,
and especially to those who will not. I wonder if a future conference
could incorporate a theme on the spiritual dimensions of midwifery
practice

Cheers, Trish

RE: QLD midwives

1999-07-06 Thread christine

It's not just Qld, NSW and the HCCC are also doing a 'great' job of witch
hunting. I think it's just we are easier targets, don't have the AMA
laywers to defend us and don't have the AMA to settle out of court. Some of
you may vaugley remember my call for assistance for a collegue being hunted
down, case went before the NRB in Mar, still no word on the outcome. It's
difficult to work out why this is happening but when we look broadly at how
our society is acting, no one has to take any responsibility, it's always
someone elses 'duty of care' to ensure the best thing is done and if we are
not happy we have the right to complain. Just my thoughts

Dear Marina,
This is yucky. I never hear of witch hunts to track down medicos who are
derelict, negligent or abusive to women. Who is behind this? Is it the QNC
or are they responding to a complaint. Who is making the complaint? Aren't
complaints made against obstetricians or are they just kept quiet?

I don't expect you to have all the answers but I do want to know why this is
happening.

Hello there all,

Here in sunny, forward thinking QLD (cough, splutter!), there is news of yet

another midwife going before the tribunal (QNC) in relation to a birth at
which she assisted many years ago.

The primary care midwife at the birth has already been before the tribunal
and retired rather than be subjected to restricted practice.

feeling very frustrated,

Marina

I think the real trial in our sites has to be a Queensland Midwives
Council and all the rest will follow. It is a terrible thing to have
ones profession governed by another largely unrelated and disinterested
profession. A future for the ACMI if only it knew!
nigel again.

I had a nice talk with Nicky Leap about the
  possibility of developing direct
  entry midwifery courses around Australia.

In Queensland, who can become a midwife is
  controlled by the Nursing Act
  by-law.

Entry to midwifery courses is restricted to
  registered nurses. This is
  section 23 Nursing By-law 1993.

By-laws can be changed by the QNC council after
  consultation; including with
workforce planning and with the government.

I discussed this with Jim O'Dempsey (executive
  officer) of QNC. He suggests
that he believes that no state will go it alone and
  that this is a national
issue. He believes that no state will go it alone
  and if they are
considering offering direct entry then they will
  discuss it with other
  states through the ANCI.

Do you know what controls entry to midwifery
  education in your state?

Thanks for any help.

Re: +Adequate+Backup

1999-07-06 Thread MIDWIFECF

Dear Phil
The theory that an obstetrician needs to be involved in the normal as well as
the abnormal is very seductive but the training and experience of most
doctors means that they cannot sit quietly at a labour and just let it happen
- their very impatience and need to move it along means that women get
interventions which often preclude a normal labour.

This ia not a criticism - we expect doctors always to "do" something, this is
what they are trained to do and this is what we need them to do most of the
time, sitting quietly allowing an inflammed appendix to rupture or sitting
patiently without intervening while a man is having a heart attack just
isn't on - doctors are doers, it is often too hard for them to just sit it
out with a woman going through a painful, sweaty, laborious process when they
can instantly "heal" it with an epidural or a quick ventouse. There are some
very sensitive doctors who can do this during birth but they are very
exceptional and unusual because they are going against everything they have
ever been taught.

So sorry that midwives are being witch-hunted in Queensland - my sympathy and
love go to you, having just been through it myself.

With love
