2001-08-03 Thread Sally Tracy

As far as I can understand - the ACMI began with vision and wisdom .and
maybe suffered a little adolescence as any growing thing does. I
for one believe that so much is achieved through unity and partnership with
each other and I really look forward to the next stage in our history where we
include other women to join us.
The college seems to be standing tall at the moment and is in a fantastic
position to shape the next stage of growth for Australian midwifery through the
BMid initiative and through all the repercussions from developing standards etc
etc..and even through this latest crisis with indemnity
I have first hand experience of belonging to a college that has become the
lifeblood of midwives in New Zealand. Through the college every step towrds
'autonomy' was supported and encouraged and led.
We can have a similar experience here - it takes loyalty and commitment and
sharing at every turn..but it is possible

Why is it that so few of midwives belong to ACMI?
I don't want to get side-tracked from the real issues with this one, but it
 does deserve a comment.
To my knowledge most of the independent midwives in Vic have been long-term
ACMI members, and some of us have held branch executive positions. But we
make up the tiny minority of the profession. It's in the mainstream that
the problem exists. There are unit managers and senior midwifery staff in
many hospitals who don't belong to ACMI - they are unlikely to encourage
new and existing staff members to join the professional body. They are
unlikely to support midwives who want to go to acmi-run study days, and pay
the attendance fees from the unit's budget.

Fw: Insurance for Midwives

2001-08-03 Thread Jackie Kitschke

Dear All,
I have forwarded on the reply I recieved from the ALP. The
site that lists their policy regarding insurance is http://www.alp.org.au/policy/pdpindemnity310701.html
They do address midwives and the current situation after
discussing the "risky business of birth".

List of women's groups

2001-08-03 Thread Andrea Robertson

The following suggestions were sent to me by our midwife colleague in the
United Arab Emirates, Liz McAlpine.

Please add any more that you can think of. If you know an actual person who
could propose the resolution at a meeting and be there to support it when
it comes up for discussion, that would be ideal. Even if you are not a
member yourself, what about your mother/aunt/sisters/friends? Would they
help us?
