get
forgiven and forgotten by the victim like the boys- it lives on in her
mind
and can have repercussions influencing her life and relationships
later!

Was this Australia It happens in other countries in the Middle East
and

Why do these Migratns bring their Filthy ideas and low morals here
to
Australia.

  Subject:

I have been deeply disturbed by the recent court case where two 16
year

old girls were gang raped by three men. The girls were on
their way
  home

at
about 1am and were having
difficulties getting a taxi from Beverley Hills station.
These men
  pulled

up
in their car, jumped out and surrounded the girls,
forcing them into
  the

car
at knife-point (though this information was deleted from
the girls
statements and therefore from the court hearing, in order
to ensure a
successful plea-bargain with the offenders). These three
men, without
remorse held the girls at knife point, and took it in
turns to rape
  them

both, over and over again for around five hours. You
could imagine
  their

terror - not knowing whether they would live or die and
the
  humiliation
  of

being used as a piece of meat with no regards to their
tears and cries

  for

help.

The three men were sentenced yesterday. Two were given
five (parole -
  2

years) and six (parole - 3 years) year jail terms - the
other, just
  one

year, which means that he will be out in three weeks as
he has already

served a year awaiting trial. One of the men who migrated
here eight
years ago, said he had no idea that it was against
Australian law to
  pick

up young girls and gang rape them at knife point. This
seems to be one

  of

District Court Judge Megan Lethams excuses for her
ruling. Another
  was

that the boys father had died the previous year. These
are not
  excuses.

There are no excuses.
The charge of kidnapping was never even considered due
the absence of
  that

information from the girls statements. It was in fact,
made out that
  the

girls went willingly which somehow manages to translate
into a lighter

sentence. Regardless of whether they went willingly or
not, no one
deserves
to be brutalised in this way. You may be aware the
controversy and
  media

attention that has surrounded this case but THIS IS NOT A
RACIAL
  ISSUE,

simply a plea to the Law Enforcers of this country to

ANF MIDWIVES

2001-09-01 Thread Anne Clarke

Dear All,

What the hell does the ANF in Victoria have to do
with Midwifery and ratio to mother/midwife?

Was ACMI consulted?

Nursing does not have ANYTHING to do with Midwifery
and when are we and the nursing profession and their exponents going to realise
this.

I am offended and angry that again, nurses and
their associations etc are dictating to Midwives on their profession. I am
sure they would not be happy if the decision was reversed, would
they?

Is this decision/endorsement for the mother/midwife
ratio for Victoria alone or does ANF have a say nationally?

We cannot let this happen. How dare
they

What can we do?

I am well and truely p*d off about
this.

2001-09-01 Thread Ian Andrea Quanchi

Relax Anne it is not a national issue and is a part of industrial negotiations
in the latest enterprise agreement in Victoria.
Whether we like it or not the majority, by a long way, of registered
midwives in Victoria are members of the ANF and as such give the ANF the
right to negotiate on their behalf. Now those of us who are members of
the ACMI might believe that they should ask the ACMI for an opinion on
things relating to midwifery but the reality is that they are under no
obligation to do this and until more midwives belong to the ACMI this is
not going to happen with any certainty. Now I'll admit that the majority
are not really putting much thought into who is better equipped to look
after the interests of midwives but for whatever their reason this is the
way they are choosing to vote by their membership.
Despite all our beliefs we have to continue to live in the real world
and not think that things will be the way we would like them to be just
by wishing. This insurance issue is going to further widen the gap in Victoria
as many independent midwives have belonged to ANF for the insurance and
they may not choose to continue this although as in my own case until I
have an alternative insurance cover it is still all I have to cover the
work I dod do in a hospital.

My view

2001-09-01 Thread Ian Andrea Quanchi

Well today is the first time I have had the time or the energy to put my
thoughts on paper about the insurance issue.

The ANF rang me and asked me to come to the meeting on Thursday so I
changed all my appointments and made arrangements to go. I saw a client
who was due on September 6th and she had not had any signs of impending
labour and so I asked her to ring me before 7am if that changed.

She rang at 0640 to say that her membranes had ruptured so leaving here
for over 7 hours to attend the meeting was not on. I did ring the ANF to
apologise but notice by Joy's notes that I was not on the apologies
list.

The birth story is worth the telling but not the subject of this letter
but I guess things happen for a reason and she obliged bu having her
baby on August 31st while I still was covered ( I think) by the existing
policy.

Those of you in a similar situation will, and the remainder probably
will have difficulty, understanding how I feel at this moment. Just
sitting here I can hardly see the keys for the tears that have been so
close to the surface for the last twenty four hours.

I guess I knew in my heart that this was going to be the outcome but I
could never give up hope that a solution would be found and that the ANF
would put up the cost of the policies of all ANF members to continue to
give woman the right to choose where they give birth and who it is that
they want to have with them.

I am sitting here not considering giving up my practice. I can't. I
haven't been through what I have over the last two years to give it up
now. I haven't even been to a home birth yet and have just booked my
first client that wants one. I'm working out how to go about
continuing.

I totally respect the right of the ACMI to advise me not to practice
without insurance as at the moment it is a part of their policy that all
midwives have insurance and that was fine while it was available but if
I have to choose between being a member of the ACMI and practicing then
they had better be looking quickly at that part of the policy. The
nurses board of Victoria are in the same situation.

My long suffering husband, with the patience of a saint, has stood by
my side throughout all this and simply sat beside me yesterday and said
well what do we do now? Looking at ways to get rid of all my assets is
probably the answer. You have to look at this from a lawyers perspective
as that is who is driving this. That is where all the litigation stuff
is coming from. Lawyers don't take on cases where there is little
likelihood of a payout and if I don't have any assets then they can sue
away but you can't get blood out of a stone. I have absolutely no fear
of being sued by a woman and all of the clients I have at this stage
have volunteered without prompting to sign a disclaimer rather than give
up the option of having me provide their care. But I think the deal is
legally they can't sign a disclaimer on behalf of their baby and that is
where a case will come form if one ever does.

Well I guess the ACMI conference in a couple of weeks is going to give
us the opportunity to get together and discuss this and I for one am
glad to be going.

I feel better now after having talked to you all and over the last two
years this list has been a god send for support and for that I

ANF

2001-09-01 Thread Anne Clarke

Dear Andrea and all,

That might be well and good that most Midwives are
members of the ANF in Victoria, but do they realise that the ANF is taking a
Nursing perspective not a Midwives perspective while so called 'representing'
them to the Gov.?

I would hope that ANF member Midwives are clued
into this and get involved because it sounds that their membership to the ANF is
not worth the money if the ANF is flushing their practice down the
toilet!

As far as the insurance cover, do they know that NO
union covers their members for indemnity only legal?

If the Nurses Union here in Queensland covered me
for the indemnity part of insurance I too would be happy, but they don't, only
limited legal cover. The hospital, if a staff member, covers for
indemnity, that's if they don't drop you like a hot potato in court, beleive me
if it means you or them, who do you think they would leave 'holding the
proverbial bag'. The legal cover you may gain from the union may help to a point
in court (hearing), but the person(s)taking the actioncan still take
you to civil court.

If the ANF have asked you to participate, I would
hope that you would make them realise that they have members who are Midwives
not Nurses and to have an arm of Midwives (that practice Midwifery mind you)
that deal with members issues that pertain to Midwives.

Midwives who are members of the ANF in Victoria
should be up in arms about the ANF discussing Midwiferyissues that they
(ANF)OBVIOUSLY do not understand or they wouldn't have negotiated or
suggested such ludicrous mother/midwife ratio's.

Put them right Andrea and our Victorian Colleagues
NOW NOW NOW.
