Waterbirth, Strep B, Thrush, Herpes2 and mec
Hi, I am very aware that some of the requests we put up go round and round. Right now I need some help with research relating to waterbirths, with respect to Strep B, thrush, Herpes and mec stained liquor ie whether risk of infection/problem is increased/decreased in a water environment. Also could do with copies of existing waterbirth protocols in relation to these conditions. I have to add that it seems harder and harder to encourage women that they can birth normally when all these tests and controls apply!! FW: WOMEN'S HEALTH MAC consultations
Victorian women please note: -Original Message- From: Absolute [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, November 16, 2001 2:23 PM To: (Recipient list suppressed) Subject:WOMEN'S HEALTH MAC consultations PLEASE CONTACT EMMA GLOUFTIS ph (03) 9616 8047 FOR MORE DETAILS The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women's Health Wellbeing want women to participate the the development of the Victorian Women's Health Wellbeing Strategy. A discussion paper has been developed for input. (the paper can be accessed at www.women.vic.gov.au) Also if you book into a consultation Emma will send you a copy. Attached are the details of statewide consultions times. 1 November 2001 Dear Women and Service Providers, On behalf of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women's Health and Wellbeing (MACWHW) and the Department of Human Services, we are writing to invite you to participate in the development of the Victorian Women's Health and Wellbeing Strategy (WHWS). The WHWS is a commitment by this Government to develop a policy and strategy that aims to: * Improve the health and wellbeing of Victorian women, particularly those most at risk; and * Provide a policy framework for planning, funding and delivery of services to women in relation to their health and wellbeing Over the past months the MACWHW has been consulting with 5 population groups of women who previously have not been consulted fully or whose needs have been under researched. These are Koori women, women with disabilities, working women (paid and unpaid), women in and post release from prison and lesbians. We have now analysed that information, added to it the material gathered from previously held consultations and areas of research, to develop a Discussion Paper. The paper outlines key action areas, principles and possible directions and strategies for feedback. These directions and strategies aim to target those population groups and issues which most s ignificantly affect the health and wellbeing status of women. We would like to hear your thoughts on the paper in general, and answers to the questions that will be explored in the forthcoming workshops. To this end, we are holding 14 consultations across Victoria in November and December. A schedule of those consultations is attached to this invitation and we would welcome your involvement. Childcare, transport, interpreters and catering will be provided with adequate notice. Please respond to Emma Glouftis on (03) 96168047 before 4pm by the required RSVP date listed on the schedule to confirm your attendance and your requirements for the day. You will be sent a copy of the Discussion Paper, which you can also access on www.women.vic.gov.au We look forward to meeting with you and working with you to further improve the health and wellbeing of Victorian women. Yours sincerely, The Hon Caroline Hogg MP Chair Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women's Health and Wellbeing -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics. Hi all: Mareeba is in far north Queensland, the Atherton tableland, north west of Cairns. My grandmother lived in Mt. Molloy which is a very small town north of Mareeba on the road to Cooktown. love, marilyn -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics. Re: Waterbirth, Strep B, Thrush, Herpes2 and mec
Hi all again: where I am in Washington State, USA I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of water births at home and in free standing birth centers. We (the midwives I have precepted with) do offer our mom's to culture or not to culture with Strep B (GBS) and risk based or culture based protocols per the CDC guidelines, GBS status does not preclude water birth. The reasons we advise against birthing in the tub (if this is the mom's choice)are around fetal distress and meconium liquor. If we are expecting a depressed baby we prefer to birth on land just because of the time saved if resuccitation is needed. If there is moderate to significant mec again we prefer to birth on land so that we can suction on the perineum. I don't think any of these protocols are based on research but rather experience and opinion. I do know of other midwives who don't follow either of these guidelines. Again a hx of herpes does not preclude water birth. Obviously vaginal/cervial lesions at time of birth would (as they would probably indicate a c/s), however I have attended a number of births with mom's who have a hx of herpes and none have had lesions at time of birth, however we are always vigilant. Both the Cochrane data base and Midirs have research on these questions, try also PubMed and BMJ for full text articles. take care, marilyn -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics. Re: Waterbirth, Strep B, Thrush, Herpes2 and mec
Sue, at the Birth Centre at Royal Womens in Sydney, part of the waterbirth protocol is for women with mec staining to not birth in water, but GBS pos are not precluded. Nor is there anything in our policy about herpes or thrush and waterbirth. Can mail you a copy of our policy if you like? Re: Waterbirth, Strep B, Thrush, Herpes2 and mec
Dear David, In reading the RCOG list, it is all hypothetical. As a waterbirther of 14 yrs, I have never encountered any of the problems listed by RCOG. I also believe that it is not contraindicated if mec liqour is evident, because the birth into water seems to wash the mec OUT of the orifices, unlike suction which might stimulate the infant to gasp. So far the only genuine contraindication I haave found is if the woman wants to get out of the water or doesn't want to get in. This I listen to.
