RE: [ozmidwifery] tongue tie snip?
Laurie Kobler at Integrity Dental in Dural and Baulkham Hills does the procedure - I think he is the one Di was referring to in her email. Monica Hogan at Westmead Hospital would be worth contacting for information and support. She was part of a research project into TT in the UK, and very nice as well! Contact me privately if you want her email address. Hi all, advice for a woman whose first baby had a severe tongue tie that was never diagnosed until way too late by which time bf had just not worked for her at all. She's pg again and looking for support just in case this one has TT as well but has been told she can't have it fixed straight after birth but has to go on a waiting list to get it done. This makes her pretty anxious after last time's hellish experience. She's in western Sydney. Any ideas? Much appreciated! Yep was Laurie Kobler, just couldnt find where I had written it down? It may well have been Monica that I was thinking of in Sydney, it was someone who had been involved in a trial, if I brush the cobwebs away I may even remember more! Re: [ozmidwifery] Natural Birth
Or is she trying to establish the percentage of births that are intervened with that actually genuinely NEEDED the intervention? That would be nigh on impossible to obtain honest statistics on... In terms of how many women actually get to birth without intervention, I know the Hospital figure is somewhere around 3 - 5%, but can't remember where the research substantiating that figure lies...anyone? A dismally small amount, in any case. - Original Message - From: Dean Jo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.au Sent: Friday, May 19, 2006 11:23 AM Subject: RE: [ozmidwifery] Natural Birth What she is asking is how many women actually get to birth without interventions. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mary Murphy Sent: Friday, May 19, 2006 8:47 AM To: ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.au Subject: RE: [ozmidwifery] Natural Birth Surely if they are (natural, normal, unintervened) it means they don't' need medical assistance? Re: [ozmidwifery] Natural Birth
The WHO recommend that the Caesarean rate should be no more than 10% in a population of healthy women (that is no, pre-existing medical conditions etc). They also recommend that inductions should be no more than 20%. Their assessment is that 80% of women can have a perfectly normal uncomplicated birth with no interventions at all. The reality is, if you include drugs for pain and oxytocics for 3rd stage, then my guess would be that fewer than 5% of women in a hospital settings (and maybe even less than that) have no interventions at all. In fact, the only ones to escape completely might be those who give birth in a birth centre, if they decline the oxytocics for 3rd stage. It's a bit sad, considering we are a healthy, robust population of women, on the whole. I bought myself Peggy Vincent's book the Baby Catcher for IMD and have just finished reading it. I laughed, I cried but most of all thought I was reading a book that could have been about me.
