Maybe we should start hiring Vets rather than
Obstetricians as seems to be the norm in our culture right now ;)
LOL at the thougth of telling them that you will be

I completely agree. I have finally looked this up on the
website. What a great selection of photos. I particularly love the older
breastfeeding child looking at the camera as she feeds. That is how my little

"dawn-breaker" feed and any other feed she can get when I sit

I'll be off to ABA soon to get one.

[ozmidwifery] CTG

2006-10-19 Thread Mary Murphy

This
is the most recent review of the value of CTG. It is convincing and has
the power of numbers, but no one take any notice of it. MM

Continuous
cardiotocography (CTG) as a form of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) for fetal
assessment during labour.

Alfirevic
Z, Devane D, Gyte GML

This
is a Cochrane review abstract and plain language summary, prepared and
maintained by The Cochrane Collaboration. The full text of the review is
available in The Cochrane Library (ISSN
1464-780X).

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2006 Issue
3
Copyright 2006 The Cochrane Collaboration. Published by John Wiley
Sons, Ltd.

Plain
language summary: Authors' conclusions

Continuous
cardiotocography during labour is associated with a reduction in neonatal
seizures, but no significant differences in cerebral palsy, infant mortality or
other standard measures of neonatal well-being. However, continuous
cardiotocography was associated with an increase in caesarean sections and
instrumental vaginal births. The real challenge is how best to convey this
uncertainty to women to enable them to make an informed choice without
compromising the normality of labour.

Sounds like the same one we were opposite
at last years expo here in Adelaide Kelly and yes, they even have a cute
cuddly bear that gives out the freebies to the kiddiesperhaps you need to organize
a breastfest sit in for an hour a day, get all the mums you can to gather
around and sit on the floor and feed their babies, letting everyone know whats
really important when it comes to nutrition! Put signs up on the back of
toilet doors, give out handouts, youll be surprised by how many women will
gather around for something thats specified to happen at a certain time!

Good luck

Arethe formula companies really giving infant

other countries. If it does happen at the Expo, you should report them to

Unfortunately they have free reign with that

[ozmidwifery] medication question

2006-10-19 Thread Susan Cudlipp

Dear List-wives
I have a new mum who normally takes Dexamphetamine
for ADD (adult) and whose baby was quite growth retarded, probably as a result
but no-one is saying that for sure.
She has been off meds for a few weeks and is breast
feeding her little bub, really wants to continue but is not doing too well off
the meds and is getting quite scared of a repeat of PND that she had last
time.
Mimms wasn't greatly helpful apart from
discouraging use in lactation and pregnancy - but as she had been using it in
pregnancy anyway
Do any of you have knowledge or experience of this
med and effects in B/F?
TIA
Sue

Has something significant changed in the last 12 years then Mary?

Lisa, the usual window, especially when
technology and machines is concerned is 5 yrs. Sometimes older research is used when there are multiple
research papers over a long period of time, like in newborn jaundice.

What you could do Mary is ask them what research they are using
to back up the use of cord gases and see how long ago that was produced.

I have never collected a cord sample for gasses
as I only practice in homebirth. I guess we could look up the protocols
for taking the cord blood and see what the references. Could someone who
works in a hospital do that for us please? MM

2006-10-19 Thread Barbara Glare Chris Bright

HI,

They won't have free rein if we all (mothers and
health professionals COMPLAIN) It amazes me that amidst the ocean of media
report about healthy eating and obesity, the importance of breastfeeding is
ignored, or ridiculed on television as it was on "Sunrise" yesterday morning
(and probably will be on 60 minutes on the weekend) or crucified like it was on
"Life at One" last week.

The media needs to lift it's act, and they will
only do so when they get the message from US.
Yesterday morning "Sunrise" did an article on David
Suzuki, talking about in 1992 more than 1/2 of the world's scientific Nobel
Laureats wrote an open letter warning of the damage to the enviromnment.
No media outlet in the world ran the story.
Then Sunrise spoke about a poll they were
running. Breast v. bottle, and the announcer tut-tutting about how
breastfeeding was a personal choice and women shouldn't be judgemental of each
other. Excuse me! they had just set it up!

Breastfeeding is not a choice like wearing your
blue top or your red top tonight. And getting information to women and
health professionals has nothing at all to do with guilt - the usual excuse used
by the media to ( and promoted by the formula companies to ultimately promote
their wares) Anyway, as to complaining

Write to your member of Parliament asking him to
write to/forward on the material you send to Tony Abbott, Minister for
Health. This way you kill 2 birds with the one stone. You educate
your local MP and Let Tony Abbott know that health professionals and mothers of
Australia are NOT HAPPY

Also, write to the APMAIF panel, enclosing any
brochures etc that you have. Don't worry about whether it is technically a
breech of the agreement. If it is enough to offend you as a mother or a
health professional, send it in - let them know how you feel!

APMAIF SecretariatDepartment of Health and AgeingMail Drop Point
15GPO Box 9848ACT 2601
While you are at it, you could complain to the
Victorian Office of Children about their decision to keep having their Maternal
and child health nurses educated by Wyeth. You could write to the CEO Gill
Callister [EMAIL PROTECTED]
And send a copy to Minister Sheryl Garbutt at the
same time.

I agree MIMs can be very unhelpful at times. Where I
work in Mental Health, we currently have a mum admitted with a post-partum
psychosis/mania. Bubs was born at 32 weeks and is in SCBU, and mum was
expressing. We were discarding her milk after she gave it to us as she
was taking olanzapine (an antipsychotic) and Sodium Valproate (a mood stabilizer).
MIMs said that this was not safe for bubs, however, at mums insistence (she
is a doctor), we accessed a brilliant little book called Medications in
Breastfeeding, which showed that these 2 meds whilst were bad in pregnancy are
safe in breastfeeding. SO now bub is receiving mums expressed milk
if we had just relied on MIMs mum AND bub would have both missed out!

Hi Mary,

I suppose you could be right about the technology.I am going to
the WCH hospital today. I'll find out how old their machine is. I
rang a hospital in Britian (I know it's not here but you have to workwith
what you know sometimes) To find outwhen they replaced their
machine. They have had the same on for 15 years, used differently over the
years but not changed. IWould think you could successfully argue
that the data is relevant if the technology is unchanged. -I
had a quick scout around and couldn't find anything that interesting past the
2001 paper I already referenced. However it is all very boring to read
through.

It would be very interesting if someone out there at a hospital could
find out how old the references for the protocols are.

Hi Tiff

I have looked after a woman taking Olanzapine for

was gained through the WCH drug information service. She was changed from
Sodium Valp to Olanzapine while pregnant due the the well known effects of the

it. I worked in conjunction with the mental health service and the womens

the breast feeding. Who publishes the book on medications I would like to
follow this up more closely.

Hi at my hospital this is what happens and I assume that it also happens in
other hospitals here in Adelaide.

The midwives fills them in if they are at the birth then they are put into
the front of the babys casenotes and given out when the mother leaves the
hospital. If you give them to the mother after the birth straight away
sometimes they are misplaced and they cannot be re issued, it's a legal
thing I think.,

2006-10-19 Thread Janet Fraser

While you are at it, you could complain to the
Victorian Office of Children about their decision to keep having their Maternal
and child health nurses educated by Wyeth.

WTF? My jokes about MCHNs being sponsored by
formula companies isn't a joke? Where can I learn more, Barb?

I was at a birth recently and after she had the baby the mother asked me about the paperwork and whether she could get a registration reissued. It turned out that she had never registered the previous child (now 4 years old) and had lost the papers! We were able to reissue the registration papers after we verified the birth in the register. I think she would have a fine to pay tho.

What was said on "Life at 1"?

While you are at it, you could complain to the
Victorian Office of Children about their decision to keep having their Maternal
and child health nurses educated by Wyeth. You could write to the CEO Gill
Callister [EMAIL PROTECTED]
And send a copy to Minister Sheryl Garbutt at the
same time.

Warm Regards,
Barb

  Arethe formula companies really giving
infant FORUMULA samples to pregnant women here? Are they breeching the
WHO Code so blatantly here? I thought it was fairly well regulated -
unlike many other countries. If it does happen at the Expo, you should
report them to the ABA for further action.

Unfortunately they have free reign with that
toddler milk crap in a can/drink dispensing machine whatever.

Writing a complaint letter about
inappropriate advertising of artificial baby "milk" might help you channel
this rage. I HATE those stalls with a passion. You know that expo is really
the Prams'n'Formula Expo, don't you? You'll also see lots of drug companies
giving unbiassed (snort) show bags to pregnant women and even better,
FORMULA companies giving SAMPLES and show bags to PREGNANT WOMEN. How's that
for totally unethical, hey?!

Im going to be at the
Melbourne Pregnancy, Babies and Childrens Expo in Melbourne starting
tomorrow, and who else is my stand next to but. Karicare! I felt so angry
the whole time setting up today - I have a really bad feeling they are
going to be giving out toddler milk samples, ready to drink on the stand
they have one of those drink dispensing machines with the clear plastic
tops with a mixer inside it, you know like when you go to those ice-cream
shops and they have slushies or juice in them swishing around? GrRRrrRrr!
I hope I am wrong but they always hand out samples anyway. The marketing
plastered all over the massive stand just infuriates me... for mums who
nutrition is important to them! Its firing me up and I am not even there
yet!!! I dont want to even look at them
  tomorrow
