Re: [ozmidwifery] Article about natural birth and brain haemorrhage

2007-02-04 Thread EKS

My GOODNESS!!! All in the name of research…..I definitely wouldn't be
letting my newborn have a MRI scan! I wonder if the parents were paid (and
if so..how much) to allow their newborn to take part? Interesting to see if
there is an increase in cancers for this research group in years to come.

Belinda

Not sure why an MRI would cause cancers as the type of energy used
does not disrupt DNA or any biological process... I'd be more worried
that the babies would have to be immobilised for the scan (if so -
how?) and would probably be terrified as they are very noisy.

Re: [ozmidwifery] Strep B

2007-01-08 Thread EKS

Jassy - last time this discussion was on this list, I wrote a little
on it at my blog
(http://midwiferyiscatching.blogsome.com/2006/12/06/antibiotics-and-gbs-and-birth-oh-my/)
to give you some ideas. In your case - I'd consider using antibiotics
for a maybe situation when you are so allergic to some types already,
to be opening you up to a huge risk of allergic reactions...

Hi all,

I know info on this topic has been posted before but I deleted it all –
silly me as I now wish to ask some questions which have probably already
been covered.

I am 34 weeks pregnant and was not going to have the STREP B test but I have
done some further research and it suggests that all women SHOULD be tested
but antibiotics used during labour for a positive result may not be the way
to go.

To all the midwife's on this forum: is it necessary for me to have this
test? Is it in my and my babies best interest to do this?

If I tested positive (which I didn't with my first child, in fact I don't
even remember having the test) is the intravenous antibiotic really
necessary? I do not want this as I plan to have a water birth and I am also
highly allergic to penicillan and other forms of backup antibiotics.

I will raise this at my midwife appointment I am due for this week I would
just like some opinions.

Kind Regards

Jassy

[ozmidwifery] Midwife in Canberra / area

2007-01-06 Thread EKS

Hi! A girlfriend of mine is pregnant and due in August of this year
and is very keen for anything but a hospital birth. She has put an
application in for the birthing centre in Canberra but due to the
small capacity there, she doesn't think she'll get in! So - can anyone
point me at some midwives who are able/willing to do homebirths in
that area? She is just investigating at the moment.

Re: [ozmidwifery] birth pool

2006-11-18 Thread EKS

Just be careful that using chlorine, bleach, metho or the sun for
sterilisation isn't ruining the plastic. Without knowing what kind of
plastic it is, cleaning with those kinds of chemicals may cause the
pool to perish much more quickly.

Re: [ozmidwifery] Hormonal contraception and visual disturbance

2006-11-08 Thread EKS

Hi Alice,

http://ccli.org/nfp/contraception/pill.php was one place I found with
references for further study - am too tired to dig further. I did find
that blood clots in the veins are related to the oestrogen in the
pill. Use of the pill is linked to blood clots forming which in some
rare cases can form in the retinal arteries which may cause temporary
or permanent blindness.

Re the blindness potential and the IUD - you'd probably know / my
reading and research showed that the hormone levels from Mirena are
localised and therefore are not systemic so I'd suggest that the
chances of having blindness as a side effects from it are much lower.
If she can be sure that the blindness has been linked to the pill,
then it's a good option. There are other causes for blindness like
this - I had patches of blindness a few years ago that eventually led
to me losing vision in my left eye, and the first thing that was
investigated was the pill that I was on. Tests eventually showed that
I had shingles and the pill wasn't involved in this case, though the
finger pointing was pretty strong.

Hi,

I've been approached by a friend about contraception options. She's
previously been on the combined pill (Brenda I think), but had serious side
effects the main one being periods of blindness. She's been told that these
episodes would be likely to continue to occur if she took the pill and that
they would increase in duration (her first episode was a few seconds, but
some were up to 15 minutes long).

I was wondering if any of you have heard of this happening or know anything
about it. Is it the oestrogen, the progesterone, or both that cause it?

We've discussed a few options and she's quite interested in IUDs. She has
reasonably long and heavy periods so has some concerns about a copper IUD,
but is also concerned that perhaps the Mirena might make the blindness come
back.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I don't really know anything
about blindness associated with the pill, so would be very interested to
find out both so I can pass the information on to my friend, but also for my
own knowledge.

Thanks.

Re: [ozmidwifery] 60 minutes

2006-10-23 Thread EKS

I caught the end of the show and watched it with my partner who
scoffed along similar lines to Tania's comments below. Have you
considered giving Media Watch a heads up
(http://abc.net.au/mediawatch/tipoffs.htm) on this? I would love to
see it on Channel 2 instead!

Emma

P.S. Sorry yes I'm delurking and should introduce myself - I'm on my
way to being a midwife via university intake in 2007 having recently
hopped off the corporate slave roundabout. I'm (im)patiently awaiting
that outcome and reading as much as possible in the meantime. I have a
blog on this topic (http://midwiferyiscatching.blogsome.com/) if you
want to visit!

Janet,

Wanted to add my support and thanks for taking on the formidable 60 minutes
'journalists', (and I use that term loosely.) You came across as highly
articulate and obviously loving and caring towards your children, without
fitting into the mould that they obviously wanted you to, hence the
mountains of vision of the family from overseas. It was interesting how
they predictably brought up everything they could think of that would
marginalize AP, including vision of a real life birth! As I watched it I
was thinking…cue the hippy breastfeeding the school aged child, cue the
homebirther, cue the woman with baby in a sling (how shocking!). Thankfully
this show lost most of it's credibility years ago, most people I know who
actually watch it think that it's laughable that they see themselves as
investigative journalists. More like an upmarket Today Tonight, making
stories up for ratings. Must have been a slow news week!
