[ozmidwifery] Donation of birthing kits

2006-11-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All.
Can anyone provide me contact details of either an organisation or individual
through which donation of a birthing kit can be made to
Midwives/communities/coutries in need.

This is a Christmas gift/donation instead of Kris Kringle at a workplace.

Kindest Regards
Wendy Buckland

Margaret Aggar has been working with, training and supporting Timorese
Midwives. She has set up an account through a community bank to raise funds
for these midwives. Margaret is a midwife working at Central Coast Health,
Gosford. I'll pass on your email to her. I think she would love to hear from
you.

Hello Wendy,

the Alola foundation is good too for our East Timor sisters - you can purchase
maternity packs as Christmas gifts.

http://www.alolafoundation.org/gift.php

The following is information from the website.

Alola is the childhood nickname of a young East Timorese girl from Suai called
Juliana dos Santos.

During the violence of September 1999, Juliana was kidnapped by a militia
leader and taken to Indonesian West Timor. She was 15 years old. This militia
leader still holds her today.

Ms Kirsty Sword Gusmão is the founder and Chairwoman of The Alola Foundation.
Kirsty is the First Lady of the Democratic Republic of East Timor (RDTL)

Kirsty continues to campaign for the return of Juliana.
See CNRT Website for articles.

Kirsty is an amazing woman and her campaign to improve the lives of the women
of East Timor is truly inspirational.

warmly, Carolyn

2006-11-27 Thread Kate and/or Nick
Care Australia (www.careaustralia.org.au http://www.careaustralia.org.au/
) has them in their Christmas catalogue - $59 - not sure what it includes.
Or for $89 you can buy a bike for a birth attendant.

TEAR Australia (www.tear.org.au http://www.tear.org.au/ ) has $60 to train
a village healthworker/birth attendant.

I recently attended a morning run by the 2h Project where we assembled 3000
kits. We each paid $20 to cover freight. Not sure if they are tax
deductible, but they certainly seem the best value for money. Not sure
whether they have a card set up as the others do. You can contact them

Zonta is one organisation who provides birthing kits. I don't have contact
details, but perhaps you can Google them.

RE: [ozmidwifery] Donation of birthing kits

2006-11-27 Thread Tania Smallwood
Zonta and World Vision both do something of the sort, not sure where they
distribute to, also try any of the overseas charities such as Save the
Children. What I do know is that the Zonta kits are made in Australia by
volunteers and then sent over, and there is some agreement with the
government whereby they get $1 for each $1 donated to them. A kit costs
approx 70c to make, so if you had $100 that would buy a lot of birth kits!

On a similar note, my mother in law last year for Christmas bought me a
bicycle for a village midwife in Africa, through a charity in the UK. You
get a lovely card with a photo on it and an explanation of the gift and what
it means to that community – lovely! What a great idea for your workplace
to come up with…not sure what the charity was, but a quick google search
should come up with something.

Tania
