re: 12 hour shifts
Dear Chris, I work 12 hour shifts at the WCH BC in Adelaide. We use a team midwifery model of care in the BC. The 12 hour shifts help with some continuity of care, not carer. We still have all of the problems associated with shift work because sometimes you are run off your feet for 13 hours, need to call other people in etc and then other times nothing for 12 hours which is annoying. We are in the slow process of changing to a caseload model (have been for awhile) to increase the contiuity of carer and not midwives sitting around with little to do some days and then not enough staff to cope with the sudden influxes of birthing women.
