Re: I'm back

2002-02-06 Thread Jan Robinson

Glad to see you back Sally ... Hope you have settled in now.

There are lots of exciting things happening in midwifery ... The Maternity
Coalition is growing and increasing the thrust towards a launch of their
national campaign .. Insurance will be an issue with them, I'm sure but the
main push will be for all Australian women to have access to their own
midwife.

There is the possibility of a funded homebirth scheme being set up in NSW
..that way the midwives who contract for the homebirths will be insured via
public funding. SA and WA already have a pilot scheme set up.. So it should
start to flow across the nation now and all women will benefit from having
access to their own (insured) midwife.

You can see the latest of the PI insurance issue by accessing the ACMI
website.. Insurance for all will be slow in coming but we should have a
reasonable insurance option through our College membership sometime this
year.

In the meantime, some are practising uninsured, others have given it all
away, temporarily. Still others have a few months to run with their Guild
offer, but they are not taking on any more clients after May.
Shame about the whole thing ... It has led to midwives practising in fear. I
think Dr Kathleen Fahey gave us some great examples on this list last year
of how birth eventuates when the practise is based on fear and that is not
the way we want midwifery to be practised in this country.
Cheers

2002-02-05 Thread Johnston

Welcome back Sally! We missed you.
Briefly,... No news on PI insurance.
Many midwives have pulled out of homebirths. All the advice is that we are
mad to practise uninsured.
A group is working on a national plan for community based midwifery, funded
in mainstream systems. Talk to Tracy Reibel about it - she's the main
author.
Hope you and family settle in well to the west.

2002-02-05 Thread Toni Cannard

Welcome back Sally!

I think the answer to your last question must be yes.

I've had a second request this week to support at a birth for a couple who
are seriously considering doing it at home ALONE.

Difficult position to be in - wanting to support women and their choices but
knowing that my fears will rise over time during a labour without a midwife
on hand.

Love,
Toni
