2001-11-14 Thread leighmidwife

The longest I have waited for a placenta with no bleeding is 9 hours. It was 11pm so
we all went to bed with instructions to wake me if any problems. When I described a
manual removal the mother sat on the toilet and there it was. She was very tender in
and around the vagina and feels that this is the reason for the delay. Leigh

wait any longer the facility I transfer to will be punitive to my client. So off I

happy jan and the placenta was picked out bit bt bit I truly believe it would not

 A story from me:
I don't want to minimise the importance of what you and others have been
saying Jan, and I agree that sharing our stories does make us feel
 vulnerable at times.
I found that sometimes I worry about these things unnecessarily.
The woman had given birth at home to her 7th beautiful healthy baby. This
was her first planned homebirth. Two hours after the birth she was
sitting
in a lounge chair, just soaking up the delight of the moment. Placenta
was
still in, and cord not cut. There had been no bleeding. I had spoken a
few times about getting the placenta out, but evidently my words had gone
over her. I cleared my throat and gently informed her that I really
needed
to recommend a dose of syntocinon and controlled cord pressure (I believe
that it would be dangerous to pull in a grand multi without synt), and if
it wouldn't come we would have to bundle up and transfer to hospital
 blahblah.
Karen seemed to come out of her trance, looked straight at me and said, a
little puzzled, and said If I stand up it will come. And it did.
 Silly me.
That was some time ago, and many of you wise women out there probably know
how to work with the woman better than I did then. I was worrying
needlessly. Learning to deal with third stage, and not be afraid, has
been
one of the most significant learning experiences for me in becoming an
 independent midwife.

I asked this because last night I was in the middle
of a 10 hour wait. The woman did not want synt although I offered it.I must
admit that the repercussion for 'being punished' by the hospital (where I am
currently working as well) did flash though my mind several times, but the woman
was clear that she wanted to wait.. so wait we did... finally the placenta came
out with minimal blood loss.

Very ineresting times though.

in peace and joy

Also waited all night for one at work when the father would not let the ob
touch the cord because his wife declined an oxytocic! THAT gave rise to some

 Hi Sally

So far the longest I've waited is 3 and a half hours. The placenta emerged
no problems. Have heard stories of waiting much longer and the placenta
 still spontaneous arrived.
