In response to these postings.

I just want to let you know
howdifficultthe midwives who work at Clayton are finding these
changes.

We are working under considerable pressure and
feeling frustrated and sad that women are now faced with such awful birth
experiences.

Many of the midwives from Moorabbin chose not to
come to Clayton, a very sad indictment of how they feel about the
systemthere.

I know there is a great deal of anger withing the
community, but please be aware that there are many midwives here that feel the
same way as you.

Sally
Are all or at least some of the disheartened
midwives and those in the community combining or joining MC to add to the
existingground swell to change the vested situation in Melbourne ???

Like a rope it is stronger and can move
heavier(in this case more entrenched loads) the more twines which combine
to create the total pull??

2004-01-20 Thread Andrea Robertson
Dear Sally and everyone who is involved or affected by these closures -

This is going to sound really negative and dramatic, but I can't help
feeling that until the tragedies caused by these closures are publicised
the health system (read Government) won't make any efforts to change things
or to introduce NMAP.

The problem is being exacerbated by the shortage of obstetricians and their
unwillingness to work unsocial hours, their need for a diverse practice and
of course, their need to earn enough money. To attract doctors to
obstetrics, they are being encouraged to work in the larger units where
they can be guaranteed enough work in both obstets and gynae. They also
need enough clients to cover their insurance costs (although these are
subsidised). The solution the health system has adopted is to concentrate
births in units where there are at least 500 births per year.

Perhaps if we could find some disaster stories or women willing to
publicise the poor outcomes they received because they were subjected to
the medical model of care, we could interest the media in blowing the cover
off this appalling situation. If we could go to the media with a list of
specific near misses, actual cases, and angry women, this might help. It
should certainly be appealing to the shock jocks.

All of you midwives working in hospitals could quickly accumulate such a
list, and perhaps even approach some of the women concerned to tell their
stories. Publicising (what about releasing a photocopy the incident book?)
some of the adverse events might underline what is going on. All these
events must be reported somewhere, and if copies fell off the back of a
truck then that could be useful to Maternity Coalition or whoever else
wants to take this on.

It is only because we never hear of the bad stories about hospitals that
people think all is well. Please be assured I am not wanting to demonise
midwives but would rather want to paint them as the unwilling victims of
all this as well

What do people think?

Andrea

Okay guys, I guess it's about time I considered joining the Maternity
Coalition.
Just thought I should first check the level of commitment that is expected.
Can an active member give me some idea? Cas?
Have just given up home schooling three of my five children so I've a little
extra time now.
TIA, Sonia W.

Sonia

As little or as much as you can! We no doubt welcome close to the latter,
but then again the more we get the less the load!! Are you in Victoria? Let
me know and I will put you in touch with the local president.

I didn't know the Moorabbin Birthing centre was
closing. That is disgusting. First Clayton and now Moorabbin. Who are the
smart powers of be who think they know more about birthing than the people who
  need those facilities.

What are they doing? Birthing in corridors for
goodness sake. Is it becomingthat birth is just another shoof em in and
shoof em out event, NEXT? Next thing you know they will just be mixed in with
the general hospital poplation. Not so unlikely now is it?

This makes it even more important to put women
back in charge of their birthing soTHEY will denote what they want. For
  goodness sake!

And we wonder why so many women are now turning
back to home births. Who can blame them.
