Bellshare and SharpVoice

2004-05-16 Thread Steve Pattison
I just read about both of these programs this afternoon. Both programs
are a bit like Skype but I haven't tried them yet so I don't know how
accessible they are. Bellshare can be downloaded from
www.bellshare.net. Bellshare has been written by the author of
Buddyphone and is the next generation program following on from
Buddyphone. SharpVoice can be downloaded from www.sharpvoice.com.

Yes, here are some instructions that someone sent along last week or so:
Here are some shortcuts for this fine program, which may be useful to

 some here:

b: Marks the beginning of a selection

n: marks the end of a selection

Note, that one can have several selections simultaniously in one file.

To activate a specific selection, one can use the menu system of

 Mp3DirectCut.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not

the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move

by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:

1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left

2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right

3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left

4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a

 selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the

MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts

 can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a

 different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.

It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually

selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from

one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The

file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue

sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the

markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions

 in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box

is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file

position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours minutes

and seconds alone. The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts, which I mentioned in my first

 message about MP3DirectCut:

r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the

 recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open

As much as I know, there's no pause function in the program.

 s: Stops the recording.

These were just a couple of the shortcuts and functions of this powerful

program, with which one can also normalize, fade-in fade-out and so

 on and so forth.

 Hi Marlaina,

Here are some more shortcuts: One can rewind and fast forward using

cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move

faster than the first two. How many frames each pair moves can be set

 via the menu system.

In case anybody here is still looking for the MP3DirectCut homepage, it

 is at:

Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)

2004-05-16 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi

There is no wizard to access the presets. You use the straightforward menus
perfectly accessible with Jaws, choose the group of presets you wish eg.
Continuous Noise Reduction,Dynamic Filters, Bandpass, etc.; each of these
bring up a dialog box which can be tabbed around. One of the places you land
on with the tab key is a preset combo box from which you can choose from up
to a hundred presets - you can then preview the one you've chosen or indeed
if you are happy with it, you can apply it to the file.l All this is
perfectly accessible to Jaws. You can even slightly fine tune each preset.
Some more sophisticated tuning would need th Jaws cursor but generally
there's a preset for just about everything. The next version just about to
appear has an automatice checking and analysing of the file to which it will
then apply the filters it chooses. I think these can even be fine tuned. As
I've said in a previous email they appear to be addressing some of these
finer points and hopefully this automatic function will be Jaws friendly.

The new program will not need anyone to choose a small area of file as a
fingerprint for noise reduction of the whole file - it seems to do the
analysing itself. It's perfectly true at the moment that selecting a small
area as a fingerprint is difficult in DC5 as editing and selecting are
difficult but not impossible. I prefer to save a small area of the file in
Cool Edit Pro (Audition) - a portion only with the background noise - then
import this into DC5 to analyse and make a preset. Then I import the whole
file and apply it. To be fair though there's generally a preset which will
work fairly well With the new program however fingerprinting will be a
thing of the past.

Hope some of this helps.

all.
Certainly with the hundreds of presets, it's got much more choice. I've
tried quite a lot of the cheap and expensive programs and I believe that
this is probably true to its claim in being the best once you get used
to
using it. I was totally blown away at first when I put a file with a
terribly scratchy and clicked 78 through it - nothing remained except a
 good
quality recording which had slight enhancement on it, clear, sharp and
  extremely acceptable.

It does so much more, audio grabbing from CD, Video etc. radio
recording,
live filtering eg. connect the input of your soundcard to the source the
output of the sound card to another device and pass the signal through
DC5
and it will filter live. The new version will allow DirectX plugins so
 even
if you haven't enough with this package you can use your Sound Forge

I'll include the advert for the new version. It does look exciting,

 hopefully
you have that same song on vinal. And then plug a pair of

 of phones in

try and start them both at the same time. Make sure they're as close

Hi Rocker

I'm afraid I'm not aware of any scripts for JFW and DC5. To be honest I've
not used half the features as I really only am interested in my business
with audio restoration and once I prepare a file eg the portion I want to
process - I do this in Cool Edit Pro (Audition) I then load it into DC5 and
apply any of the presets of which there are hundreds. The dialog boxes for
each of the functions i.e. Dynamic Processing, Continuous Noise filter, Band
Passes, etc., these boxes are perfectly able to be tabbed around and
selections chosen. There is a combo box in each dialog box which contains
from about 20 to to about 100 options, in the case of noise reduction giving
you many fingerprints of different devices, record players, tape machines,
dictaphones, reel to reel recorders, all types of dolby settings, 45rpm,
33rpm and 78rpm, etc. which can be applied to the file or previewed first.
In the EQ dialog boxes again there are similar presets giving so many
options it's more than likely you would be able to find one. In general
there's enough for anyone to use there - the difficulty is that if you want
to tweak any of these you have more difficulty and would have to use the
Jaws cursor to get around with varying degrees of success. As I said earlier
however for most people there are enough presets to get by with.

The other main problem with the program is that editing is not simple - I
only use whole files I've prepared somewhere else eg. Cool Edit. The good
news is that they have responded favourably to an email I sent (and others
too of course) detailing all the things the program lacked including the
need for more transport and selection shortcuts. At present it's accessible
menu-wise and dialog box-wise to a good and usable degree with Jaws, but no
doubt with continued pressure and perhaps more VIP's giving suggestions,
this good program can only get better.

I have no hesitation in recommending it at the moment if the features I've
described are what you need, and you're not too bothered about tweaking at
present. Also because I spend much time analysing a file for the best preset
it can take some time to settle on one. With the new program however with
its automatic functions not only to ascertain which filters are necessary
for the file but also with the ability to adjust as the file proceeds, I can
see this taking out much of the drudge work and possibly appealing to the
novice who wants a professional finish easily achieved.

Take care.

2004-05-16 Thread Bobcat
Have you used the save split dialog? This should create individual files
for each song or track that you have previously selected or marked. Pay
attention to the dialog because it has options for file naming. When you
finish, navigate to the folder where the split files have been saved then
you can load them individually in Winamp.

Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)

2004-05-16 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi Hank
It's not easy to select areas in a file in Diamond Cut. It may be possible
with the Jaws cursor but I think not. As I've said in another email to
someone on the list, I edit the file first in Cool Edit (Audition), taking a
small portion of file with only the noise and loading it into DC5. I then
make a preset of the fingerprint, then load in the complete file with the
hiss and then apply the preset I've just made. If you want to be precise
then you can't do it at present in DC5 - you must edit the portion somewhere
else then import it into DC5. If for instance it's a complete song with hiss
then there's no problem - you just load in the file and apply any filter
preset. For more limited areas you have to select and save somewhere else
then import into DC5.

Hopefully the new version will have some of the suggestions I've put to
them - they're promising to do something to make transport and selecting
more accessible. Also with the automatic analysis and constant checking mode
that is coming I'm hoping this will make precise editing and selecting less
necessary.

At present however I use it to augment my editor as it provides many easy to
use filters which are much more powerful.

Regards.

  Hi

There is no wizard to access the presets. You use the straightforward
 menus
perfectly accessible with Jaws, choose the group of presets you wish eg.
Continuous Noise Reduction,Dynamic Filters, Bandpass, etc.; each of
these
bring up a dialog box which can be tabbed around. One of the places you
 land
on with the tab key is a preset combo box from which you can choose from
 up
to a hundred presets - you can then preview the one you've chosen or
 indeed
if you are happy with it, you can apply it to the file.l All this is
perfectly accessible to Jaws. You can even slightly fine tune each
preset.
Some more sophisticated tuning would need th Jaws cursor but generally
there's a preset for just about everything. The next version just about
to
appear has an automatice checking and analysing of the file to which it
 will
then apply the filters it chooses. I think these can even be fine tuned.
 As
I've said in a previous email they appear to be addressing some of these
finer points and hopefully this automatic function will be Jaws
friendly.

The new program will not need anyone to choose a small area of file as a
fingerprint for noise reduction of the whole file - it seems to do the
analysing itself. It's perfectly true at the moment that selecting a
small
area as a fingerprint is difficult in DC5 as editing and selecting are
difficult but not impossible. I prefer to save a small area of the file
in
Cool Edit Pro (Audition) - a portion only with the background noise -
then
import this into DC5 to analyse and make a preset. Then I import the
whole
file and apply it. To be fair though there's generally a preset which
will
work fairly well With the new program however fingerprinting will be a
  thing of the past.

  Hope some of this helps.

 Tim,

What I did was to go to radioshack and buy a small amplifier for around
$20 I think.

It gave me a tremendous amount of gain, far more than I actually needed,
so just set the volume control on it at a low level. The amp is powered by
a 9-volt
battery or you could get an AC adaptor.

The other alternative would be to get a power mic which is a mic with a
small amplifier built into the base and is also powered by a battery. Since
I already
had a working mic, I opted for the small amp.

The amp also works quite nicely as a small audio amplifier as it has an
internal speaker which is, of course, muted when you plug a cable into the
output
and run it to your computer.
