Re: music folder time duration

Winamp can do this for you. Generate your playlist in winamp or select the
tracts you want and then in the winamp playlist editor type control-alt-g
and it will generate a report in html for you showing you the length of
each track and the total time. Here's what it looks like:

WINAMP
playlist
3 tracks in playlist, average track length: 1:05
Playlist length: 3 minutes 15 seconds
Right-click
here
 to save this HTML file.
Playlist files:
1. a different world (1:10)
2. 77 sunset strip (1:04)
3. 227 (1:01)

Greetings!
I'm sure we all remember the Sony walkmans cassette player? Well you would
have
thought that Sony's dominance in this feeld would have continued into the
computer age, apparently not.

I've just read about Sony's new product which they claim will rival the
Apple
Ipod, if Sony truly believe that the IPOD is threatened by the new Sony
wonder
then I suggest they think again.

It is accepted as "STANDARD PRACTISE" these days that the consumer should
be
able to download MP3 files and transfer them to a portable device (as MP3
files) but Sony's new walkman player doesn't follow this simple principle,
you
need to use the supplied software to take the MP3's from your computer,
transfer them to the walkman unit and then have them converted to Sony's
ATRAC
compression system. Yes, you can transfer MP3 files to the walkman units
hard
drive leave them there but that won't do you any good as they cannot be
played
in native MP3 mode, what an absolute waste of time.

Conversion takes 3 minutes per file so speed is a big problem here, with
the
Apple IPOD, its just a matter of using the ITUNES software supplied to
transfer
the MP3 files from your PC or download them from the net, that's the end
of the
process and they're ready to be played instantly.

Another problem with the new Sony Hard Drive walkman is power, the only
way
this beast can be powered is from its power cradle which plugs into the AC
mains outlet, the IPOD can be powered in a variety of ways including from
a
computers USB port but none (to my knowledge) have car adaptors available.

Re: FROM HAVING "THE SMALLEST" IN THE MARKET TO HAVING THE SMALLEST OF THE "SMALLEST" IN THE MARKET

2005-01-20 Thread Dane Trethowan
You're quite right! the point I'm making is that you shouldn't need to
convert from MP3 to ATRAC, the player should handle MP3 instantly and
without problme, the only thing you can do with MP3 files on this unit is
to store them on the in-built hard drive, you can't play them unless you
convert to ATRAC first therefore, you do lose quality when converting from
one format to the other. As I said previously, this is just such a waste
of time compared to other devices such as IPOD and IRIVER which just let
you transfer MP3 files etc ready to be played at the press of a button.

Now another point that springs to mind. I have a Sony Minidisc machine
here which came with the Sonic Stich software. I found this to be rather
inaccessible as it used BMP graphic images to display menus etc so I'm
wondering just how bad the Sonic Stich software supplied with the player
under discussion is. I'm lucky! I use LINUX to do all the tasks I want
from my Minidisc player and (I suspect) that much the same sort of LINUX
software is available for this player too! but if you're using Windows XP
etc then I suggest you don't have much hope in doing the MP3/ATRAC
conversion the player requires anyhow, anyone else got thoughts on this?

Re: Recording Skype calls

2005-01-20 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ah! that may be part of the problem as that Total Recorder driver is a real
pain in the bum sometimes (well most of the time in my experience) so
you're better of bypassing that completely.

Set your lines of recording to use the mixer controls (that is the controls
you set from the volume control of Windows) rather than through the "MIXER
THROUGH TOTAL RECORDER" setting to start with.

Sorry, should have thought of that, I'm not at all surprised if people have
trouble recording from Skype etc through the Total Recorder driver, plays
all sorts of wonderful games and tricks when I'm using broadcast software etc.

At this time, I am using DSL without having to use an extra phone line. I'm

I hope this made some sense to you.

Hi all. I don't know if this has been discussed before on this list, or
not, but I'm thinking of maybe getting Dish Network. Other than being a
little slower, is the quality of things you listen to or download from as
good as cable broadband. If any of you have used cable, then went to a Dish
(or at least DSL), how do they compare for you? Does the Dish seem more

Re: MP3 AUDIO

2005-01-20 Thread Joshua Loya
It's alright. I still prefer .OGG for my lossy compression, though.
There is a noticeable difference with mp4 compared to mp3 in regard to file
size and audio quality. The main drawback is that not as many applications
and hardware devices support mp4 as mp3. If you want to still use mp4, just
be certain that all the applications and devices that you plan to use
support it. If you have to convert file formats a lot, I suggest lossless
compression like Monkey's Audio or .flac instead of mp4 or mp3.

HTH,
Joshua

Subject: MP3 AUDIO

Greetings!
Sorry if I'm asking what's been asked in the past with this.
Anyone played with MP4 and (if you have) and (if you've used it for audio)
then what do you think of it as compared to MP3, OGG etc, have you sued
any special settings or have you just stuck with the defaults as presented
by Easy CD DA Extractor etc.

Thanks

Re: file associations.

2005-01-20 Thread Andrea Sherry
Have you been in to the Windows Media Player and checked to see if this file
with the .asx extension is registered to play there?
Those files are an absolute PITA especially as the stuff from Audible is an
encrypted form of this type of format.

hi guys, got the following problem in Winamp pro.
I have been trying to run a file with the extension asx in Winamp, but the
file just won't play for some reason. I was told on another list to
uncheck the asx box in file association in Winamp, and the file would then
play in WMP.
It doesn't work, the Winamp program is still trying to play the asx file,
although I have unchecked the box as advised.
Any Ideas.
Billy
