Re: Logitech
Hi Peter. I appreciate all the suggestions on the keyboards. Now I'm wondering if maybe, I can figure out a way to make the volume control on this keyboard work. I have one that didn't come with this computer. It worked fine with the other one, but I can't make it work with this one. I have a Dell now, but my former computer was a Gateway. Re: n-track - what is it?
Hello, I really haven't found a way to mark sections of a file or delete them, nor to line up sections. I use Sound Forge to mute the parts of tracks I don't want. Perhaps if you e-mailed the author and told him that other blind users are enjoying the program, then he would be willing to implement a build with certain keystrokes. The easiest would be to use the standard Windows selection commands. For instance, to delete everything before the cursor, he could use control shift home and then delete, and control shift end and then delete to delete after the cursor. He is very responsive, so let him know the problems you're having, and see if he will work on them. He's made special builds for me and retained the changes once I told him that they worked, but I think he'd like to hear from someone other than myself in the blind community. Thanks a lot. Re: didgital recorders?
I will be reviewing the edirol r1 for you guys just be patient until I do it right. I will give you this information now. Here are some Good points of the recorder. The edirol r1 is the best recorder I have ever had. for a recorder you get your moneys worth. the built in mikes are very good. You do get fast transfers from the recorder to the pc for editing. The encoding at 192 kbps MP3 is good. I have not had the problem that mike Lang had with recording a blank file so they must have fixed that in the firmware. The recording effects such as echo and voice change are nice to record with but these features are lost on me sense I just want a great recording and with the edirol I get that. You do have an adjustable recording level on the recorder and it has a good monitoring feature. I have not tried AGC yet to determine how that sounds, and I probably will not. The power and lock switches are nice but having gotten use to the Iriver's electronic on off switch I forget to switch the edirol off some times. The main thing is the edirol has a great downloadable manual that blind folks can read. There is not a bunch of graphics to describe the buttons and the operating instructions of all of the functions are precise and straight forward. A very good and easy manual to use. And here are some bad points of the machine. The major issue with this machine for the cost is no editing capability what so ever. I would have expected at least the editing capability of the Sony mzb 100 but there is none of that. there is no way to delete files or portions of a file on the fly. you can delete a file by going through the menus but that is time consuming. I know of no way yet to create track points either by creating new files or pressing a button to insert track points in to a filewith out pausing the recording. and the worst thing is you can't scroll through a file audibly while reviewing the file in play mode. if you press the back or forward buttons you get no sound until you release the button and the player jumps to the new place in the recording. This in my opinion is terrible. With the Sony you could at least here the scan as you go back and forth. if I weren't transferring files to the pc for editing this lack of editing features alone would cause me not to keep the recorder. The second point on my list is powering of the machine and the fact that the recorder does not have a means of recharging batteries. I wonder which battery company the edirol manufacturers was sleeping with. when you are in the field you have to power the recorder from two AA batteries that you have to insert in to the player. This thing is hard on batteries. You will get about 60 Minutes of recording on standard batteries. NIMH batteries are some what oversized for this recorder causing you to force them in to their slots but you can double actually triple the recording time with those. But, Why did the manufacture not give you a rechargeable power supply for this unit as much as it costs. I am going to have a battery pack designed for the machine because I will not keep changing batteries in, and out. You must have a fresh set of batteries for each recording cession. I feel that with the constant changing of batteries that you will eventually damage the machines battery compartment. All other problems are with the plastic case of the machine and are just minor complaints except for one, the compact flash slot. The problem with it is that the slot was overly designed. The manufacturer wanted the card totally in cased in plastic so you would not damage it. You have to open a compartment with a poorly designed door, and press a button to get the card out. in my opinion they should have just had the card sticking about 1/4th of an inch from the recorder the way the manufacturer of the bookport does, so you could just grab it with two fingers and change it out. This does not bother me as I bought a 2 GB flash card and never plan on changing out that card. When you change the batteries you must take the battery back off and hold it in your fingers while you change the batteries. I would rather the battery compartment door would have been attached in some way, or I would like to have been able to slide the two batteries down a barrel and cap it off. This is just bitching sense I just don't like changing batteries in and out of the thing anyway. I had to put non skid feet on the bottom of this machine as the case was a bit unleveled and would make noise on the table. I would expect that from a $30 tape recorder maybe but not a $400 one. Again just bitching the rubber feet I put on work fine. there is no handle or carrying strap on the case of the Edirol so you must tote the recorder around in your hand which is a bit awkward. you get a cheap zippered case with the recorder but it is just a body bag for the machine with no handles or carrying straps . I have fumbled the recorder a couple of times because of this awkward way of

Re: Backing up mp3's onto a dvd
Hi, When using roxio e z cd creator 6.x, choose creator classic from the opening menu. Navigate to the files you'd like to store onto the dvd. Remember, you're making a data compilation, not music. Press control t to add the selection to you dvd, either a file at a time, or a folder at a time. You can route your mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen, and move it up a line at a time to hear how much room remains on the dvd. They hold 4.5 gigs of data. If you put more than 4 gigs on, you'll get a warning message that after burning, the dvd will be closed. I use dvd's to archive a lot of data. Whether you'll be able to play these mp3's on a player depends on what the player supports. My dvd player is old enough, about four years, that it will not play dvd's or cd's that I've burned. I have players that will play mp3 cd's. I suspect that there is, or some day will be, a player that can play any format. Hope this helps. Rusty At 06:17 AM 7/29/2005, Andy spake thusly:- Hi Peter I burned mp3's onto a standard cd and Simon was able to listen to the music on his boss wave machine. I could also listen to it on my dvd player which is under my tv. I understand that a dvd can hold mp3 tracks, but cannot get Easy CD Creator to do it for me. Best wishes. Andy from sunny Kilcreggan. I'm assuming a DVD has more than 1 Gig of space, otherwise you'd just place the discography on a regular CD. Which is fine if you only have a discography of 8 albums or so. But if an artists discography amounts to some 15 albums, then a DVD with the space of perhaps 2 Gigs would certtainly be the way to go. If this is the way you went and you placed all of an artists discography on one DVD in mp3 format, could you then play that DVD on a stereo slash mp3 player? Hmmm. Now 14 Cat Stevens mp3 albums on one DVD playing all day on one DVD disc. Man I'd be teasing Buddha in Katmandoo with a chocolate bull at four on a broken morning in room C79 while I waited for the peace train. Re: Latest version of winamp and bookmarks
hello Kevin, Maybe you'd better think twice about installing the latest version of Win Amp. Many people have been complaining about the crazy things that happen with the playlist editor. Well I for one, have had similar problems with that thing. For some crazy reason after installing 5.094, when I would hit enter on Win Amp from the desk top, I would get thrown in to that stupid playlist editor, and couldn't get out of it no matter what I did. So I, like some others, had to delete that version, and go back to a friendlier version, namely 5.08E. Re: ACCESSIBLE MP3 PLAYERS
Hi, The only .mp3 player I use is the very rudimentary and small capacity MuVo from Creative Labs, which I got as part of a subscription package from audible.com, an online digital audio book vendor. This isn't likely to suit your needs, if only because its flash memory capacity is only 128 Mb. But as far as audio quality goes, this isn't something like home stereo equipment, where products can differ vastly in their ability to produce good sound. From my experience, as well as from every consumer article I've read in various places, including the New York times tech news section, the circuitry of these devices is pretty uniform in design and manufacturing quality, and thus essentially transparent. What will matter most to your ears will be how the compressed file is encoded and then, assuming that as a constant in terms of source quality, the most important link in this short chain will be the acoustic properties of whatever headphones you choose to use with the device, including their sensitivity rating. Which matters here because the higher the sensitivity rating, the less battery power and the less amplifier power will be required to drive them to acceptable volume levels, increasing battery life and reducing distortion from having to turn the little amp up too high. All that said, ordinary ear buds like those offered by Sony and other companies will probably suffice quite well if you're mostly playing popular music to exercise by or something like that. If your mobile listening tastes run to more sonically complex music with a broader dynamic range, as in classical music, then better headphones would make an appreciable and audible difference. Hope this helps. Re: Cooledit questions
the record/stop-recording is control-spacebar chord. Editing a .wav file is pretty straightforward using the right-and left-arrow keysto move the start-time back and forth; the shift+right- or left-arrow keys to move the end-time. However the one disadvantage in cool edit is that there seems to be no way of instantly moving your edit point to a particular part of the file. You simply hafta use the arrow keys and be patient. That's why God invented snacks. Anyway, with the JAWS cursor you can read the information you need. Jayn - Original Message - From: Dave Marthouse [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Plug in
I am passing this question on from a friend. reply to list please. Hi A friend of mine gave me some video cds, and I don't have a player to play them, but he said there is a plug-in you can download for either Real or Windows Media Player. Does anyone know what it is called that I need as there are several different plug-ins? He told me that it is free. I am anxious to see the videos. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
