Let me start by pointing out that as part of the measurably low price
of US $9.00, one can subscribe to Sound Computing, a series of 50
audio articles, one of which concerns how to speed up playback in
 winamp and windows Media Player;.

Regarding Pacemaker, here is the page from which older versions can
 be obtained:

 http://www.surina.net/pacemaker/old/index.html

when I use the plug-in, I raise the tempo and leave the other
settings alone. It works very well. Indeed, the newer version isn't
 as speech-friendly.

Re[2]: Fwd: VIP Communicator, a new chat client for the blind

2006-05-06 Thread Patrick Perdue
Hi:
That would be pretty cool but not practical to write I would think. I
use Miranda and love it, but most of the voice chat protocols are not
open. Then again, that hasn't really stopped people before I suppose.

I primarily use TeamTalk for voice chatting.
It can be found at www.bearware.dk.

It uses the open-source Speex codec as does the latest version of Ventrilo as an
option, however,
Ventrilo uses TCP to transmit the audio data, which means it's slower
due to the error correction in each packet.
Ventrilo's implementation of the codec itself isn't nearly as nice
either.
It also utilizes 3d sound for sound card's that support it, allowing you
to pan users around in a 5.1 spectrum if you have a setup like that, or
linearly, depending on the support of your sound card.

When we first downloaded and tried this program out, you had to do the
whole drag/drop thing to pan users around, which was not impossible with
screen reders, but not too convenient. We contactred the program
developer, and he was very receptive to the idea of adding more hotkeys,
and was scarily quick about actually implementing said hotkeys into the
program.

One thing that's kind of nice about teamtalk is that the client comes
with a win32 server as well. So, if you want to just throw up a quick
server somewhere and have several users connect to it, it's really very
easy to do. We have a teamtalk server daemon on a linux box with a 30
meg pipe.

It takes a bit of configuring for optimal sound quality and bandwidth
utilization, but it's well worth it.

Book Reading Radio Service

2006-05-06 Thread Adrian Spratt
Overnight a message was posted about a book reading radio service available
online. I went to the website to discover that it's available in the UK
only. I wanted to save non-UK residents the trouble. As an aside, the
website's skip to main content links do not skip to the content. They
seem to take you back a page, though I didn't bother trying to confirm once
I realized the service isn't available to US residents.

strange problem with mp3 player and computer: compatibility

2006-05-06 Thread Tyler Wood
Hello

I'm guessing half of you don't have the player I do, but I'll tell you anyway.
PNY vibe. Here is my problem:

When I connect the player to my computer, I hear the ding dong sound that
confirms it has been recognized. Usually, a pop-up window appears asking me
what I'd like to do. Before I tell you anything else I should tell you that
this specific player acts as a removable disk in windows. I don't get this
message; and when looking in windows explorer, I don't see the removable disk.
I tried using the add hardware wizard but that didn't help iether. I saw 2 gb
vibe, in the list of hardware, but I just can't access its contents. I haven't
changed anything, it just started happening a few days ago. I'm using windows
xp and JFW 7.0. My USB ports are all fine, since I tested them with my epson
printer and kanin scanner. Before I finish, I might as well add that when
booting up windows, if the player is connected, windows won't boot until I've
disconnected the player. But this happened from the beginning and that's not a
problem. Also, I've tried multiple ports with no success.

Hopefully somebody can help me.

thanks,
Tyler
