Hi

What you are saying isn't making much sense here.
Winamp will still play your mp3s. The sound forge demo does not take
Winamp's ability away to play mp3 files. You just have to purchase
the mp3 plugin for sound forge so that you can edit them. Winamp
doesn't even fit into the equation here.
So don't worry, the sound forge demo has *not* changed your default player.

I've only tried ripping with nero a couple of times and that was a long
 time
ago. Seemed more hard work than CDEX or media player so I didn't use it
again. Typically, there are a few common parameters that determine how
 fast
your program will rip music from a CD.

 * the speed of your CD-ROM
 * the quality of the output files, the higher the quality the longer the
rip. Added to this, if you have jitter correction or image creation as an
option, this will extend the rip time
 * the priority of the rip - generally you have a choice of very fast
ripping that stops you doing anything else with your computer or very slow
which allows you to carry on using your computer while the rip is in
progress with no impact. There is, of course, a happy medium to be had.

 Regards.

  Hi Brandon.

Don't completely disagree with your points below - very valid.
  However,
 I
don't think it gets much easier to rip a CD than placing a CD in the
  drawer
and having it automatically ejected less than 2 minutes later having
 been
ripped to the format of your choice which once set as your default will
stick. You're free to do as much or as little with your computer while
media player is ripping too. I personally ripped with CDEX for years
 but
was converted over to media player due to CDEX's lack of support for
  modern
formats and, in particular, the format I use most often, lossless WMA.
 I
haven't regretted it. Also bear in mind that the free version of CDEX
 is
ancient now and the current version is not free unlike media player 10.

As far as playback goes, try playing a concept album where the tracks
 run
into each other or a live album in both winamp and media player 10.
  You'll
see that media player wins hands down in providing a seemless listening
experience. As for quality, it's very subjective but I do think that
  media
player does a better job with WMA than winamp. I suppose that's not a
surprise given it's a microsoft player playing a microsoft format?

  hi,
here's my thoughts on the subject.

windows media player isn't nearly the best choice for cd ripping. you
 can
  go
out and download a free program such as CDEX which is much easier to
 use,
  is
focused on ripping and allows you to convert into mp3 much easier than
windows media, as well as having more ripping modes if those cd's are
scratched. to get it, or even just check it out, go to
  http://www.whitestick.co.uk/download.html
if you don't like it, you can remove it, but i personally use it for
  ripping
as well as converting between different formats.

as for playing music, I know a lot of blind people use winamp. it's
  totally
scripted, and doesn't have a bunch of garbage that you don't need.
  it's
  all
keyboard controled and easy. it rips cd's as well, and is also a good
  method
despite being a bit slower. on my pc, it still ripped a cd in 10
 minutes
with little processor eating up, so i could do other stuff while
 ripping.
winamp allows you to burn cd's as well, and in my opinion is easier to
  use
than media player, besides having more internet broadcasting stations
available that media player doesn't have.

the only disadvantage to winamp, and this can be gotten around, is it
doesn't play dvd movies. there are plugins that allow you to do this,
  though.
  winamp can be gotten from
  http://www.winamp.com
  that's about it from me.

 Hi to the list,

Let me try and explain this a little better!

Before I installed Sound Forge 8.0, any sound file I opened would
be played by winamp 5, automatically.13.
Since I installed the Sound Forge 8.0 demo, the files are opening in Sound
Forge instead of winamp. So, yes, Sound Forge has taken over as my default
player.
I looked around in Winamp help last night, and did everything it said to
insure that Winamp is the default player.
The help file did say that some programs would try to assume control, which
is exactly what is happening with Sound Forge!

RE: tv question

2006-06-07 Thread Tim Grady
It's called a RF signal and has nothing to do with what you want to do.
What you have to do is take the audio signal from your TV. On newer TV's
there are usually output female RCA plugs on the back, left and right audio
and composite video. These are all color coded, red and white for the audio
and yellow for the video. You need to hook up to your output terminals on
the TV or VCR or DVD player or whatever you want to use. On some TV's you
have to go through menus to turn the output jacks on. If your TV doesn't
have jacks on the back then use your VCR.

Subject: tv question

hi all,
I'm in a rural area. We haven't got satelite yet, we're still receiving UHF
or whatever type of signals the old analog tv is. I've got a question. We've
got the main antenna box downstairs. We've got a cable running up to my
room, where it's plugged into my fairly new VCR DVD combo. It's using the
old cables, the ones you find in stereos for the FM antenna, can't remember
the name, not RCA though. From there, that same type of connection leads up
to my tv where the video and sound are played. I've got a question. My tv
doesn't have a headphone plug anywhere, and i want to run voyager through my
stereo. Is there a way to do this? the vcr has a couple of jacks set in the
front and a group of three three and two RCA jacks vertically on the back.
Do I have to wait till I get satelite and patch the RCA cables to my stereo,
or is there some way or feature i should look for to put tv through my
stereo instead of my crappy tv.

Re: sound forge 8.0 help needed

2006-06-07 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi John
This still isn't making a lot of sense, since Sound Forge, either
demo or full version is not a player. It is a sound editor, and sound
editors do not make changes to your file types automatically.
What you should probably do is set Winamp to play all the file types
it can. go to the preferences and ten to the file types section, and
press the all button, which will insure that Winamp will play all the
file types it can recognize. If after doing all this, sound forge
still comes up, then i would say you've got a pretty screwy system
over there. it might be time to uninstall that sound forge demo. i am
definitely shaking my head over this one.

Hp and Creative DO NOT support two sound cards

2006-06-07 Thread Bobcat
I recently was told by Hp support that they do not support two sound cards.
I don't have official email about this but was told by a support supervisor

time.

Today, Creative support emailed me and also told me Creative does not
support two sound cards.

Neither company has given me a reason why they do not support two sound
cards or how one device can cause the other not to work properly.

It seems Creative can not help me with any problems I might have running the
other card even if it is caused by updating their drivers.

Creative support told me to update the drivers to fix another problem. Now
I've lost the ability to use the first sound card (Realtek AC'97) for speech
and system sounds again.

Needless to say, I will be ditching the Audigy 4 Pro even though it has so
many great features and does sound good. I will probably buy a USB sound
device to use for speech or even get a serial port adaptor so I can run my
LiteTalk on this computer. I know many people have run down Creative sound
cards on this list before but they never really gave good reasons so I
didn't pay much attention. Now I wish I had.

I will never buy another HP product. I advise any blind people not to buy
HP computers if they wish to run more than one sound card.

Re: sound forge 8.0 help needed

2006-06-07 Thread David Tanner
Hi,

What you need to do is go into SoundForge 8, Go to the Options menu on the menu
bar, go up the Options menu to Preferences. Go into the Preferences menu and
shift tab to the general tab. Now right arrow to the File Types tab, and tab
to the button that says select none. Press that button and then tab to apply
and press spacebar on apply, and then tab to OK and press enter there to accept
the choice. Now exit from SoundForge and you should be able to set Winamp as
your default for file types. I would guess that most people would prefer not
to have SoundForge as the software that comes up as their default file player.
Its' a great sound editor, but overkill for a audio file player.

Explanation please

2006-06-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Hello,

On my XP home system, I had no difficulty installing or running the
1.70 beta for CDEX.

I also downloaded the 1.70 beta for Windows 9x to be installed on my 98
S E system.

The installation went fine; and, when I ran the program, it opened
fine. But, when I pressed the f4 key to configure the Lame encoder, I
got the following message:

Unicode failure. The Microsoft layer for unicode failed to initialize.
 Please reinstall.

So, I reinstalled, with the same result. So just what does this mean,
since I have never seen such a message previously? And, what, if
anything can I do about it?

Thanks for ideas.

Don Roberts

Rick. You wouldn't think it would matter weather it is an Audigy 2 or 4 so
I wonder what else causes this iritating problem.

I hope yours continues to work after updating Creative drivers. Mine was
