 hi leslie,
is the program you're using called biblos?
It might be creating MP3 files that are too low of a bitrate for your book
courier. If you have gold wave or some such editing software, you might
 try,
and this won't help the quality but it might help the courier, saving them
at a higher rate, instead of 22.5KHZ save them as 44.1. I can't remember
 the
specs on what the courier supports at the moment.
Other than that, I'd suggest trying D Speech or Text Aloud or Text Sound,
all good programs. You might have more luck there.

Re: A skype out problem

2006-07-06 Thread Bruce Toews
I've had some very good quality experiences with SkypeOut, both in terms
of calls I place and in terms of the one SkypeOut call I've received,
which was last week. I wonder how much of it has to do with what kind of a
mike you're using. Since the fidelity of a PC-to-PC call is much higher,
perhaps the SkypeOut service isn't properly filtering out some residuals
and harmonics or other frequencies that your mike is sending out which are
inconsequential with PC-to-PC calls. Perhaps I don't know what I'm talking
about. At this late hour, anything's possible. I'm not sure I'd understand
this message if I read it.

YAMAHA PSR3000 ACCESSIBILITY

2006-07-06 Thread André van Deventer
Hi

We at Deafblind SA have just purchased a Yamaha psr3000 keyboard. I found
an accessible manual on the yamaha website for it on their accessibility
website.

Is there anyone who has this keyboard and who can give me any tips on how
to get started. And how accessible is it?

I will also perhaps at some stage subscribe to the midimag list and se what
help can be gotten there.

I see that in the newer keyboards, Yamaha has taken away the numeric
keyboard, which is a great pity!

Re: A skype out problem

2006-07-06 Thread Richard Claypool
the quality isn't great with skypeout, but then again, you're connecting to
a landline, which isn't great quality as is. Your personal bandwitth and
net conjestion can have an effect as wel. It's not great quality by any
means, but at least over here the calls are stable, and sound a lot better
than your average cell call.

ODDcast standalone

Hi all,
I've got the Oddcast standalone installed. There is a DSP for Winamp, but I
wanted to try the stand-alone first. My question is, how does one get it to
work with Winamp? The status line always says recording from microphone, and
there's only one option in the combo box which is microphone. I uncheck the
live recording box and it still says recording from microphone, even when
I've got winamp started and playing a song. The Metadata is also not being
entered. Is there some additional files that need to be copied around or
something? I've got oddcast in c:\program files\Oddcast V3, the default
directory, and winamp is in its default as well. I checked Oddcast's help,
but there wasn't much there.

Re: i did it! ripping and Burning with Windows Media Player

2006-07-06 Thread Dean Martineau
Here below is a whole thread discussing using windows Media to rip
and burn cd's.

As usual, in windows, there is more than one way to do things. I am
in the habit of opening my cd drive in My Computer and opening the
folder containing my files to be burned in another My Computer
window. I then copy the files into the cd drive window, attempting
to get them in the right order. Once this is finished, I hit alt-f,
t, to begin the burn process. (One can also arrow to the 'write
these files to cd' option.) this launches the cd-writing
wizard. The first step is to name the cd. At this point, there
needs to be a cd in the drive. You then choose whether you are
burning a data or music cd. Data cd's can contain music or other
files, but will only play in a computer or mp3 player. Music cd's
play in computers and also cd players. Once you make this choice, if
you are burning a data cd, burning starts. If you are burning a
music cd, windows Media Player opens. You cn hit alt-b to begin the
burn process at this point, but I recommend tabbing many times to get
to the list of songs to be burned to verify that they are in the
right order. If they aren't, highlight one you want to move and use
the context menu with options to move up or move down. then hit alt-b.

this all assumes you are running xp and have windows Media Player 10.

Here, from earlier pc-audio discussions, are other takes and other information.

  that
the burning/ripping challenge has been met. (big smile) It has been a
month of time consuming/frustrating trial and error, but the pay off is
  certainly rewarding. (thumbs up)

FYI: The problem was that I used a MP3 format to burn the files. It was
confusing, because the CD played just fine in a commercial CD player
  and/or
in a computer, and actually allowed me to rip them on to a different
computer. I could never get the files to show in Media Player's
  burn/play
list. However, thanks to Kevin I tried using the Audio CD format.

The files appeared properly in the list view. Actually I'm burning with
Media Player, rather than iTunes, as the software is easier to use for
sorting files in the list view. I don't suppose anybody out there has an
easy way to sort files in iTunes? Other than that issue, iTunes is a
  pretty
  good program.

It is so frustrating! When I open a folder of songs in the iTunes
  library,
the order is completely rearranged. The iTunes documentation said that
  the
files could be copied into the play list and/or resorted in the library,
  but
I simply can't figure out how to use JFW to do that. Fortunately Media
Player doesn't rearrange the files so I'll stick with it unless somebody
  can
  help.

  Thanks again,
  Katrina

Brandon,

Your jfw.ini file should read, in part, as I've reproduced below, except for
the line I've marked with asterisks. Add the line I've marked with asterisks
(without the asterisks, of course), EXCEPT, where I have C-Media Wave
Device, substitute the EXACT name of the card you want to force JAWS to use,
as it appears in the device selection drop-down, on the Audio Devices page
of the Sound and Audio Devices dialogue, in Control Panel. Be sure to
reproduce the case and spacing exactly.

When you have made and saved this edit, exit and restart JAWS, and you
should be all set. Good luck.

Can you use your dvd reader/writer for other things, is it recognising and
playing discs you put in it etc? just wondering if the connection in the
actual machine is loose.

If you only have the one machine, is it possible that as you don't need to
make a choice, it will be blank, have you got as far as an error message
coming up? I go through all of the setting up and wait for it to throw the
drawer open for me to put the disc in, quite useful actually as I always

Any way, fill me in on what happens and I'll see if I can think of anything,

But, as I say, when I go into next to burn the field is still blank,

 hi
You can't actually burn them to a DVD and expect to play them unless
 you're
playing them in a DVD capable unit. Because they're physically designed
differently than CD's, CD players can't read them at all, even if you
 just
put MP3 files on them. Most players won't even recognize a DVD is in

 Hi all,
I've got the Oddcast standalone installed. There is a DSP for Winamp, but
 I
wanted to try the stand-alone first. My question is, how does one get it
 to
work with Winamp? The status line always says recording from microphone,
 and
there's only one option in the combo box which is microphone. I uncheck
 the
live recording box and it still says recording from microphone, even when
I've got winamp started and playing a song. The Metadata is also not being
entered. Is there some additional files that need to be copied around or
something? I've got oddcast in c:\program files\Oddcast V3, the default
directory, and winamp is in its default as well. I checked Oddcast's help,
 but there wasn't much there.
 Thanks

That is not always true. Different methods of mp3 encoding and different

there is no accuracy in this.

There's been a lot of methods already mentioned here for accurately
  checking
track duration of MP3 files. However, if you're looking for a simple
way
  of
estimating track duration and you know the bit rates of the files in
question, a rough guide is that an MP3 file encoded at 128kbps will
yield
  1
meg for each minute of music. So if you have 200 meg of MP3 files all
encoded around 128kbps then you've got 200 minutes of music. Of course,
  if
your MP3 files are closer to 320kbps you can very roughly say that a 5
minute track will take up approximately 10 meg of disc space.

hi. There is no given length for the time of a specific file
  based
on the file size, because of how it's produced, what bitrate it's
  at,
sampling rate also comes into play, etc.
If you use JAWS and Winamp, any version from 2.9 up to the
  current
5.24, press control insert pluss t and you will be told how long
  the
file is in minutes and seconds. Similarly, if you press alt plus
shift plus t, the elapsed time of the currently playing track
  will be
spoken. you can also do this while a track is paused. Finally,
  to
get the remaining time of the track, control plus shift plus t is
  what
you'll want to press. If you don't use JAWS however, you can
  press
control plus j and the jump to time dialogue box will open. You
  will
be told how long the file is and it'll give you the opportunity
  to
jump to a specific point in the file, in minutes and seconds. So
  if
you have a 65 minute long file, and you want to jump 25 minutes
  and
15 seconds in, press control plus j and then type the following:
  25:15
and press enter. and then you should be taken to that point in
  the file.
  Hope this helps.

I can't paste the complete URL because it's rather large, but on there is a
bunch of links, or you could just search for those models, if you don't
know. I'm just looking for some more specific info on these two.

Oh, it will probably do all but title streaming. It'd be hard to put title

 hi,
I've got two cards. I was planning to use the USB one as the output for
winamp and the recording for the mic. I just thought that, since oddcast
wasn't picking up metadata, and it had a box for it, that it wasn't
 recognizing winamp somehow.

 Brandon,

Your jfw.ini file should read, in part, as I've reproduced below, except
 for
the line I've marked with asterisks. Add the line I've marked with
 asterisks
(without the asterisks, of course), EXCEPT, where I have C-Media Wave
Device, substitute the EXACT name of the card you want to force JAWS to
 use,
as it appears in the device selection drop-down, on the Audio Devices page
of the Sound and Audio Devices dialogue, in Control Panel. Be sure to
reproduce the case and spacing exactly.

When you have made and saved this edit, exit and restart JAWS, and you
should be all set. Good luck.

Just go and use the DSP. I find it a lot better and useful as it is. Also,
you might consider using Sam DSP Encoders although oddcast is less CPU
intensive.

 Hi all,
I've got the Oddcast standalone installed.
 Thanks

Re: ODDcast standalone

2006-07-06 Thread Brandon Hicks
hi hayden,
Gave sam encoders a try, and I don't really like them. They just seem
annoying and bad for me. While we're on the subject of broadcasting, would
it take up additional bandwidth if i had a winamp going and just had a line
recording plug-in all the time, and just unmuted my mic when it's time to
talk? This would allow me to talk over stuff, as well as eliminate the need
for putting linerec in the playlist at random times? I'm planning on using
multiple instances of winamp, so will I have to do that anyways? Basically,
I want to have beds, so I was thinking one instance would be the broadcast
instance, the one hooked to the server and having the linerec plug-in on all
the time, then I'd have another instance for beds and music, and just have
to worry about controlling that one and tapping the mute button, which makes
absolutely no noise as it's digital, yay for USB.
Thanks

That should technically work. However, it seems a load more trouble on your
hands. I would try the oddcast plugin intergrated in winamp as it works
dandily.

World Championship Goalball recordings.

2006-07-06 Thread David Truong
Hi There,

Recently I competed in the IBSA World Goalball Championships in Spartanburg
South Carolina USA as a member of the Australian team. This gave me the
opportunity to use my r01 digital audio recorder to record a number of
Goalball games using the r01 built-in stereo microphones. So as not to
clutter the list, if you want to hear any of these games then feel free to
get in touch with me and I will give you the necessary details to grab them.
These games don't have commentary but if you are into Goalball, you will be
able to follow the games easy enough from the clear recorded audio.
