Re: Replay AV 8.03 Podcasts I did

2007-01-10 Thread Gary Petraccaro
I'm interested in being able to switch from .ASF to .MP3 after recording on an
as needed basis. Is there a way to do this with any of their current products?
I wrote tech. support about this, but, so far, no answer.
Thanks.

  Hi All
I did 9 podcasts for Applian Tech the makers of Replay AV 8.03
applications. They have the mp3 files that I did. I am not a
professional narrator/speaker but I did the recordings anyway.
This will educate both Applian Tech and new users of Replay AV
8.03. For sure Applian Tech has been listening to me for 3 years
now. I made the recordings for hobby only and I make no money
with it. I did the recordings because Applian Tech has been
listening to me whether its by email or mp3 recordings I have
made for them to listen to JAWS and how I am interacting with
  their applications.

The recordings are not complete. They will lead you in the right
direction on how to get started with Replay AV 8.03. The menus.
I have word RAV 8.04 will be released soon. I may do more
recordings if any of you need one to be done but I can't
  guarantee it.

I will let you know the URL where you can download the
recordings on Replay AV 8.03 I did as soon as I get permission
  from Applian Tech.

  Petro

But, tape sounds horrible and has relatively poor frequency response, at least
as far as music goes. Talking cassette tape, btw. Of course personally

Hi all, the easiest way to do this, is if you have a turntable that you
can set up close to your computer! You can either get an inexpensive
pre-amp that will boost the low level of a magnetic phono cartridge and
equalize it correctly and feed the output of that pre-amp to the line
input of your sound card! Then, all you need is a sound editing program,
such as Gold Wave, or Groove Mechanic wich is designed for recording
vinyl! An alternative solution, if there is no way to get a turntable in
the same area as the PC, is if you already have a fairly good quality
stereo system, with a turntable and a cassette deck, you can first record
the vinyl LP's on to a good quality cassette and then, plug a cassette
deck into your PC's sound card and record that way! Since I have my
stereo system set up right here along with my computers, I just feed my
main pc's second sound card into the tape monitor loop of my reciever, so
I can record anything that I wish onto the hard drive!

Re: please help/problems with replay AV 8.03

2007-01-10 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. I can't help with the second part of the question, but I *can*
tell you that a way to modify show info is to focus on the show you
want in the list, then press your applications key, located 2 keys to
the left of the left arrow key. I'm talking about the extended
arrows btw. Anyways, When you hit this key, a popup menu will come
up, and from that menu, press enter on properties. You'll then be in
a multipage dialogue box where you can modify the show's information
like the name, the time it starts and stops, etc.
I hope this helps. if you need more help just holler.

this is pretty important) is that I can't open a show in my list to set a
time to record. In other words, if I'm on a program in my shows list the
enter key does nothing at all. Any ideas as to what else I can do to get
the show's schedule page to open? This has happened both times I've
installed the program; then if I go back to 7 I can hit enter on a show just
fine and it opens the schedule page just fine.

The other thing I'm wondering is, when trying to use my TV tuner card I keep
getting warning messages about not having the latest Quiktime player. I
don't know what this has to do with using my TV card (which is an ATI) but
nothing records until this warning is shown at least 5 times and I've hit
the get it now button at least that many times.

Hope someone can help.

Replay AV questions

Hi,

I've just installed a demo of Replay AV 8.03. I want to record from a
stream. When it first starts up it says tip to get started press the Open
Recording Wizard button. So far I can't find this button - whereabouts is
it?

Also, I've noticed when looking around the menus that in each menu there's
an item JAWS isn't reading - at some point while cursoring down JAWS just
goes silent until I move down to the next item. Does anyone else experience
this? I'm using JAWS 7.0.

Re: Replay AV questions

2007-01-10 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Catherine

Yes, I experienced the same thing with the menus. I'm not sure what
that menu item is, if one actually exists. I wouldn't worry about it
too much though.

Also, you really don't need to use the recording wizzard. It's there,
but I found it very difficult to use. You can record a show in 1 of 2 ways.

1. go to the media guide in the menus and search for the show you
want to record, and if you click on the link that says add for that
particular show, a dialogue box will pop up that lets you record the
show. The name of the show and the proper time should all be filled in.
Also, in the recording tab of this dialogue box, make sure that you
check the radio button that says capture by downloading streams, so
that you won't have to use your sound card while you record the show.
2. You can enter the information for your show manually by going to
the list of shows, and thenif you hit your context menu key located 2
keys to the left of your left arrow key, a menu will pop up. In this
menu, press enter on the item that says enter new show. You can then
go through the different tabs of the dialogue box and enter the
information manually. Note! You'll need the address of the stream
you'll be using, so if you know that you'll need to add that
manually. There are several ways of doing this, but again if you
know it or how to get the address pasted in there, you'll be fine.

There are several other options, but those are the main ones
you'll want to be concerned with at this stage.
Hope this helps!

i had installed replay 8.03 for a client and what was different about 7 as
opposed to 8 was this new thing which was suppose to help one find streams
more accurately. it was like a second installer popped up and they were
using the nulsoft installer to run this small program. i sure cannot
remember what it is called now but what happens if you do not choose to
install it. they said it was a recommended install but one can sure opt out
of this secondary installer so, what was that small utility called again and
is it really necessary and what does it truly do for us with these web
streams. again this is found in replay 8 . x versions. what do we really
need it for just curious...

bought. Thinking maybe I should be charged half price for my mp3 player, since
it takes sight to get to record and other stuff. But, more and more mp3
player/recorders are like that now, although, some can be better accessed than

I recently heard about new digital recorders from Olympus. The real great
things about them are: First; they are designed with voice feedback for the
blind. Next, they have stereo recording. And, they are Audible compatible.

Shall I send the press release I read on another list?

RE: Beyond TV

2007-01-10 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi.

Here is a url that describes a ton of shortcut keys for media Center.
Although the page refers to Windows Vista, I was able to see that most of
the keys also apply to Media Center 2005 under Windows XP. The remote is
also quite useful and in many cases even easier than using the keyboard.

RE: Media Centre was: Beyond TV

2007-01-10 Thread Rick Alfaro
Bobcat, you just have to get used to it. As I said, I am able to use most
of the TV related functions just fine, but you have to get used to its
quirks. I have not however messed around with any of the other stuff like
playing music or DVDs as I prefer my usual apps for that like Winamp. If
you have Media Center, a TV tuner card, and a remote, using media center as
a pvr works great.

Subject: Media Centre was: Beyond TV

Here's a bit that I've found out about Media Centre while playing around
with it.

Jaws does not see text
when you use the jaws cursor. So, you have to rely on the feedback that
Jaws gives when using normal navigation. Just about all navigation is done
with the arrow keys. The tab key doesn't seem to do anything. You might be
on a control that says save and wonder where are the things you want to
change. Just use the right arrow key to get to the options. Then use left
arrow to get back to the save and cancel controls. You use spacebar or
enter to activate controls. The default setting gives clicks for feedback
when navigating around. So, to explore each screen, use the up and down
arrows to see what is in each frame or pain or sub window. And, use left
and right arrows to switch between these sections.

I was trying to use the My Music function today. Jaws does have trouble
seeing some of the controls and doesn't always give feedback when arrowing
around in there. I'm not sure how I finally get Jaws to read lists of music
files. I selected one and pressed spacebar. This took me to another screen
that looks like a player window. I'm not sure I found all the controls in
there. No hot keys were listed.

The backspace key seems to work to move to previous screens and to get back
to the main screen.

Media Centre is somewhat accessible but I wouldn't call it blind or screen
reader friendly right now.

Hi. I don't own a media center PC but I know of a few people who are
using them who are blind, and they use JAWS professional. I can't
speak for Window-eyes since I've never had experience with that,
however, whoever said that Media center was inaccessible was
mistaken. See, there's that word again, accessible, which is very
subjective. There is a huge difference between a program that simply
will not speak with a screenreader no matter how many scripts or set
files you throw at it, and a program that seems unusable, until you
learn how to navigate around it.
There's always a chance that something can be changed in the program
to make it more screenreader friendly, which could help. But in the
meantime, I'm drifting off topic here.
What I said above could count for any program, audio or otherwise.

Subject: Beyond TV

Hi There, Has anyone on this list used Beyond TV or any of the Beyond
Media
products?
I had bought a media Center Edition computer and an Adaptec Duel Tuner
card.
All this to let me control my TV and record programs via the computer
keyboard.

However, neither regular JAWS or Professional JAWS can work with Media
Center.

Freedom Scientific says that Microsoft will not let FS have access to this
program. This means that Microsoft's Media Center is intentionally
inaccessible!

Beyond TV, should let me independently record programs. Are any of you
already using Beyond TV?
If this doesn't work out, then I'll try the Swingbox I would really
appreciate any input on this.

Thanks in advance, Vicky

DVD Audio Ripping

2007-01-10 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi all,
I realize this discussion has been gone over countless times on this
list and I appologize for doing it again.
Is there any way of either converting existing .AC3 files, without
uploading them to one of those media converter services, to either WAV
MP3 or OGG?
If not, is there a program that rips audio directly into OGG that
doesn't have a 30 day demo like DVD Extractor? I assume they're smart
enough to put code in so the program stops working after 30 days. If not
I'll use this, but if so I'd like some other way of doing it.
Failing that, what rippers do MPG format? I can open those in Gold Wave
and save the Audio as long it's done in MP3. I can then transcode it to OGG.

Thanks
Brandon

Hi Everyone,

Jim Grimsby Jr. has generously provided me scripts for use with Goldwave
versions 5.16 and later. You can get them at my website for your convenience
at:

If you are still using Goldwave 5.15 and earlier I still have those scripts too.

If you download the newer scripts, please remember to compile them for your
version of JAWS after placing them in the appropriate folder.

Thanks,

whereabouts is
it?

Petro replies:

The hint tip dialog box that appears when you first Replay AV
8.03 - Just use your tab key until you land on the OK button and
then press your space bar key on the OK button.

You will land on the minimize button. To activate any of the
buttons you use your space bar keyboard key. I am using the
licensed version of RAV 8.03 and I know the demo version has a
time limit for recordings.

To find the Record button just press your tab key until you hear
the Record button announced to you and then press space bar.

Soon I will have the podcasts or mp3 files available to everyone
who needs them on RAV 8.03.

Also, I've noticed when looking around the menus that in each
menu there's
an item JAWS isn't reading - at some point while cursoring down
JAWS just
goes silent until I move down to the next item. Does anyone
else experience
this? I'm using JAWS 7.0.
Petro replies:

Yes you are correct. The silent items are blank - no option is
there. Use your down arrow key to advance to the next option. I
told Applian about this already.

Petro replies:

If the Add link doesn't work for you in a rare situation
within Replay Media Guide use your JAWS Left mouse click. This
left mouse click is found on the Num Pad area of keyboard on the
top row going from left to right and its the second key on that

Also, in the recording tab of this dialogue box, make sure that
you
check the radio button that says capture by downloading streams,
so
that you won't have to use your sound card while you record the
show.
Petro replies:

This is usually the default choice. Some stations don't allow
this type of recording. If you have such a station you should
change it to record via audio output. The stream capture is
indeed the best choice as Chris mentions.

Then, all you need is a sound editing
program,
such as Gold Wave, or Groove Mechanic wich is designed for recording
vinyl! An alternative solution, if there is no way to get a turntable
in
the same area as the PC, is if you already have a fairly good quality
stereo system, with a turntable and a cassette deck, you can first
record
the vinyl LP's on to a good quality cassette and then, plug a cassette
deck into your PC's sound card and record that way! Since I have my
stereo system set up right here along with my computers, I just feed my
main pc's second sound card into the tape monitor loop of my reciever,
so
I can record anything that I wish onto the hard drive!

I am looking for recommendations of which device or devices to

I have read about ION having a $150 device and C Crane having one that
records to CD and not to the computer for $400.

I would like to know what others have used and or if any problems
showed up.

I have no personal experience with ProTools, but from what I've read
here and elsewhere, even the most devoted aficionados of the Mac
admit with disappointment that Apple has not seen fit to make
ProTools, one of the most potentially valuable programs for the Mac,
accessible at all for the blind. I recollect no success stories of
anybody using the pc version successfully, and I would be surprised
if one could use it effectively in a course which is likely to
require you to make use of many of its features.

Well, I still wonder what ProTools can do. Is it comparable to SoundForge or

simply a matter of writing scripts to operate it with speech. Probably not.

Here's the way I do it. I start the record, alt-tab to whatever I'm using
to play the sound, play, record my vocals, stop the player, alt-tab back,
stop the recording, cut out the stuff at the beginning and end, and mix at
exactly the right place.

You can play the first track in say, Winamp, and at the same time you
can record yourself singing in Gold Wave. Then you can paste your

Yes but you cannot hear the first track and sing in time with it if
 you record them separately.

Windows Media Center keyboard shortcuts was: Beyond TV

2007-01-10 Thread Bobcat
Thanks for that keyboard info Rick. My computer didn't come with remote
capability, even though it came with Media Centre. My sound card, Creative
Audigy 4 Pro, came with a remote but I haven't been able to set it up to run
Media Centre so far.

BTW: The link didn't work for me as it was split up between lines. I
couldn't even do a normal copy and paste with it. I opened it in notepad
and removed the space that resulted when I copied it. Here it is again. I
hope it works without having to copy it since it is so long.

 Hi.

Here is a url that describes a ton of shortcut keys for media Center.
Although the page refers to Windows Vista, I was able to see that most of
the keys also apply to Media Center 2005 under Windows XP. The remote is
also quite useful and in many cases even easier than using the keyboard.

Re: new Olympus recorders

2007-01-10 Thread Bobcat
Neal from the midi-mag mailing list is going to do a audio review of one of
these units when he gets it.

Here is the press release.

Three New Digital Audio Recorders for Note-Taking at Work, and
 Podcasts, Audio
Books and Music at Play

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., January 4, 2007 Olympus unveils three new
 DS-Series
digital voice recorders that bridge the gap between work and play. In
addition
to capturing audio of meetings, interviews and other critical
 information
expected of digital recorders, the new Olympus DS-30, DS-40 and DS-50 are
optimized
for downloading, listening to and creating podcasts. The new
 recorders' high
sound quality is also great for listening to audio books and music, making
   them the all-in-one audio device.

Software included with the devices makes downloading podcasts easy, and
 the
podcasts' contents are updated automatically each time the audio recorder
is
connected to or synchronized with a computer. Podcasts and
 other audio content
can be downloaded from any Web site. The new voice recorders are also
specifically designed to work with Audible.com, a leading online
 provider of
audio books and other spoken entertainment and information.

Olympus has done a fantastic job designing the new DS-Series, in
 particular the
voice guidance feature will have great appeal to both commuters and the
visually impaired community. This functionality is a great asset
 to anyone that
relies upon Audible for its audio programming, said Chia-Lin Simmons,
vice president Strategic Alliances, Audible, Inc. We are
 confident that the
combination of Audible's vast audio selection with Olympus, the technology
leader in digital voice recording, will be well received.

The voice recorders are also distinguished by a number of premium
 features,
including:

The highest sound quality in the Olympus line-up with the new
 XSHQ Remarkable
Stereo Sound Quality mode. The new DS-Series devices can record and play
audio
content up to 44.1 kilohertz (kHz), which is equal to the sound
 quality of most
CDs.
A convenient removable stereo microphone for recording high-quality
 digital
audio.
A Voice Guidance function that talks, confirming which settings have
 been
selected and helping visually challenged users to navigate the device.
Built-in memory from 256MB to 512MB to one gigabyte that enables
 amazingly long
recording times ranging up to 275 hours.
PC Link enables the recorders to connect to a PC via the
 included USB cable
for quick downloading of audio files to and from a computer. Our DS-Series
voice recorders have been used for years by professionals such as
 doctors and
lawyers to capture audio throughout their workday, said Andy Flagg,
director,
Sales and Marketing, Olympus Imaging America Inc. These new
 devices have moved
from the hospital and courtroom into their personal lives. With stereo
headphones and up to one gigabyte memory, the new devices are optimal
 for
holding virtual libraries of music, audio books and podcasts, as well as
the
   traditional voice recordings.

   Intelligent Stylish Design
These DS-Series recorders are sleek road warriors that can go anywhere
 to
capture audio for podcasts and interviews. As podcasters join the ranks of
lawyers,
doctors and other professionals who use voice recorders, they can
 rest assured
that they will have what it takes to get the job done. The new DS-Series
have microphones that can detach from their bodies and attach to a
 remote
controller (an optional accessory) to allow podcasters to clip the
DS-Series'
microphone onto a shirt or tie and record in high fidelity at the flip
 of a
switch. Recording in this unobtrusive manner with the recorder tucked away
in a pocket helps to keep an interviewee at ease, which in turn
 can lead to more
entertaining and informative podcasts.

Designed for optimal ergonomics with a high attention to detail,
 the recorders
feature a speaker for audio playback on the back, buttons for recording and
playback on the side, and easy-to-use arrow pads and buttons to
 navigate menus
on the front. Olympus even created a power on/off sliding switch so users
wouldn't accidentally turn it on. Coated in a sleek metallic exterior
 for
durability, all three models come with large, easy-to-read high-contrast
LCD
screens that display file information, recording time and
 settings. The DS-30
features a silver casing with an amber backlight LCD screen. The
DS-40 features
a dark silver casing with a white backlight LCD screen. The DS-50
 features a
blue casing with a white backlight LCD screen.

   Voice Confirmation and Instruction Manual
The three new devices offer a voice confirmation function that
 can be turned on
or off. When turned on, the function enables the devices to speak, helping
users to navigate the folders and various set-up options. The

much info they put on the label? It seems to me that too much info
